As a 23-year veteran teacher, Ms. Rolfes has learned that before meaningful learning can happen, students must feel safe, seen, and supported. Her classroom is intentionally designed to be a place of calm, creativity, and connection—a space where students not only learn but genuinely want to be. Understanding the stress and emotional challenges that many middle schoolers carry, she's created a classroom atmosphere that naturally promotes relaxation and mental clarity:

  • A salt lamp offers a soft, ambient glow that reduces overstimulation.
  • Oil diffusers gently release calming scents like lavender or citrus to help alleviate anxiety and support focus.
  • She maintains a quiet corner with soft floor pillows, a butterfly chair, and a stool, offering flexible seating for students who need a break or prefer a cozy, grounded space to think and read.

These sensory touches transform her room into a retreat-like environment that helps students emotionally regulate and return to learning with confidence.

A chaotic space can mirror a chaotic mind. That's why Ms. Rolfes uses:

  • Clearly labeled bins, charts, and visual calendars to foster independence, routine, and clarity.
  • Lamps and curtains to replace harsh fluorescent lighting, creating a softer, warmer atmosphere that feels more like a home than a classroom.
  • A dedicated space for daily goals, turn-in procedures, and expectations, helping students stay focused, responsible, and on track.

These organizational systems teach students executive functioning and allow them to feel in control of their learning.

Books are everywhere in her classroom—on shelves, in bins, on windowsills—because she believes that a literature-rich environment fosters both academic growth and personal empowerment. Her classroom library reflects diverse voices, genres, and interests so that every student can find a story that speaks to them. In addition, the walls feature motivational posters, uplifting quotes, and even artwork from former students, creating a sense of belonging and legacy. New students see evidence that others before them have found success, comfort, and creativity here.

Beyond the physical space, she creates a positive classroom by building authentic relationships. Her 23 years in the classroom have taught her how to read a room, de-escalate tension, and encourage growth mindset thinking—skills that are just as important as curriculum expertise. When students walk into her classroom, they know they are in a place where they can take academic risks, be themselves, and be respected. That environment is the result of two decades of dedication to the whole child. Her classroom is not only a room, but a carefully crafted environment where students are encouraged to breathe, grow, explore, and thrive. With warm lighting, calming elements, structured organization, and a celebration of student voice and choice, she creates a space that meets both the academic and emotional needs of today's learners.
