Ms. Barnes creates a positive classroom environment by fostering a culture of respect, belonging, and high expectations. She starts by building strong relationships with her students—learning about their interests, strengths, and goals—so they know they are valued and heard. She establishes clear routines and consistent expectations that promote safety, responsibility, and kindness.
To support emotional well-being, she integrates social-emotional learning into daily instruction, models empathy, and creates space for students to express themselves. She celebrates student growth and effort, not just achievement, to encourage a growth mindset. She also designs engaging, inclusive lessons that reflect students' cultures and experiences, ensuring everyone feels seen and represented. Through positive reinforcement, collaborative learning, and regular communication with families, she creates a classroom where students feel motivated, supported, and empowered to take risks and succeed.
Before becoming a science teacher, she built a strong foundation in healthcare. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, where she gained hands-on experience in patient care, communication, and teamwork in a fast-paced medical environment. She also earned her certification in Phlebotomy, further expanding her clinical skill set and deepening her understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
She was on the path to becoming a nurse and was enrolled in nursing school when she realized that her true calling was to inspire the next generation. She decided to shift careers away from healthcare and toward education so she could share her passion for science with students and help them see its real-world relevance and impact. Her background in healthcare gives her a unique perspective in the classroom. She brings real-life experiences into their life science curriculum, connects lessons to medical careers, and helps students understand the importance of science in everyday life. She's turned her clinical experience into classroom energy, and she strives every day to ignite curiosity and show students that science is not only fascinating, but a path to changing lives.
