Selema Clay was nominated anonymously.

Ms. Clay creates a positive classroom environment by creating a culture of respect, inclusion, and curiosity. She greets each student by name every morning to build meaningful relationships and ensure they feel seen and valued. She uses flexible seating, student voice surveys, and culturally responsive materials to reflect students' identities and learning preferences.

Ms. Clay creates clear expectations, consistent routines, and restorative practices to help maintain a safe and supportive space. She also celebrates student growth, big and small, through praise, class shoutouts, and visual displays of their work. Her goal is to make every child feel like they belong, can take risks, and are excited to learn.

As a gifted teacher serving 1st through 5th graders in a pull-out model, her classroom functions more like a lab for creativity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary exploration than a traditional space. Because she teaches multiple grade levels throughout the day, her most pressing needs include differentiated instructional tools that engage a wide range of learners, as well as flexible seating and STEM-based manipulatives that support inquiry and hands-on learning.

Career Accomplishments:

  • 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year at Deer Chase Elementary and Top 5 finalist for Richmond County School System
  • Gifted teacher in charge of schoolwide enrichment program that provides project-based learning opportunities for both gifted and high-achieving students.
  • Led STEAM Night events, partnering with local organizations and engaging over 300 families in interactive science, art, and technology experiences.
  • Developed cross-grade gifted curriculum units aligned with state standards and gifted education frameworks, including coding, entrepreneurship, and social justice themes.
  • Served as Grade-Level Chair and Mentor Teacher, supporting new educators with lesson planning, classroom management strategies, and differentiation.
