In Ms. Wood's classroom, she creates a positive environment by incorporating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into daily instruction to help students build empathy and develop self-awareness. Students learning how to self-regulate are allowed the opportunity to manage those big emotions, focus on their goals, and still know it's okay to feel those feelings. Also, she displays her students' work, with a picture of them above, to honor their effort, which encourages pride as their identity is being celebrated and recognized.

In addition, she personalizes math word problems and other curriculum by using the student's names and experiences to make it more relevant and engaging. She incorporates games into learning to keep the learning fun. Throughout the year, she uses Kagan structures and other cooperative learning strategies to promote teamwork, active participation, and the goal of equitable participation. The use of these structures creates a classroom community filled with respect, and the students positively support each other.

Finally, she recognizes the rich cultural backgrounds of the students in her classroom. She does her best to integrate their traditions, holidays, languages, and experiences into her lessons to help create connections. One of the best teachers I've had, she helped me get through a hard time while I was in school. Ms. Wood definitely was one of my favorite teachers!

Ms. Wood was my 3rd-grade teacher during the late 2000s. She always made sure to pay attention to each one of her students and always noticed when one of us was having a rough day. She never belittled us or made us feel dumb when we got a problem wrong; instead, she'd work with us until we came to the correct solution. She cultivated an environment that let us grow as students and as individuals. It has been a blessing to have once been a student of Ms. Wood! I still have the note of encouragement she wrote me back in third grade.

Ms. Wood was my 4th grade teacher back in the late 90's and to this day I'll never forget the impact she made on me. Homelife at that time was tough for me, so I always looked forward to going to school and being in Ms. Wood's classroom. She made me feel safe, seen, and heard. Her compassion, kindness, and the effort she put in towards her students is unmatched. So much so that years later, as an adult, I found her on Social Media and let her know how much I appreciated her. Truly great teachers are hard to come by but so important for a child's upbringing. I'm so grateful that I was one of the lucky one's to have experienced that with Ms. Wood!
