Abigail Carrasquillo was nominated anonymously.

Ms. Carrasquillo strives to cultivate a positive environment in her classroom, where every student is welcomed with warmth and respect. From the very first day of school, she emphasizes that learning is a process characterized by trial and error. In her classroom, mistakes are not just accepted, but embraced as valuable stepping stones to success. Each misstep provides a unique opportunity for students to analyze their work, learn from their errors, and celebrate their correct answers. This approach allows students to understand that making mistakes is a natural part of their educational journey. It also helps them reflect on both incorrect and correct answers, so they can deepen their understanding and improve their work.

Ms. Carrasquillo also encourages students to ask questions, as this not only enhances their critical thinking skills but also promotes leadership qualities among their peers. By asking questions, they are voicing their inquiries, which can lead to better learning opportunities. In addition, her students know that their space is free of ridicule, mockery, or belittling because all human beings have challenges at times. Recognizing their shared humanity, they understand that each individual has unique strengths and weaknesses. It is within this diversity that they find opportunities to support one another, working collaboratively to achieve success in all their endeavors.

As a teacher in an urban inner-city school, she witnesses firsthand the challenges her students face, with many living below the poverty line. A significant number lack the basic resources, such as school supplies, that are vital for their success. By providing these essential items, Ms. Carrasquillo can empower her students and create a pathway for them to thrive in their education. Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their potential, and with support, she can help make that a reality.

Throughout her career, she has consistently taken on impactful roles and initiatives, including:

  • Leading district-sponsored projects such as Scope and Sequence development, focus groups, and grant proposals that drive educational innovation.
  • Serving on school-level leadership teams, where she contributes to shaping effective educational strategies.
  • Delivering professional development at both the district and school levels, fostering growth and excellence among educators.
  • Mentoring aspiring student teachers, guiding the next generation of educators toward success.
  • Harnessing technology to enhance teaching practices and actively engage students in their learning journey.
  • Participating in a wide array of professional development activities, reflecting her commitment to continuous growth and staying at the forefront of best practices.
  • Boosting student engagement through dynamic, hands-on activities, including poetry art, throw pillow design, children's book writing and illustration, 3-D storybook reports, CANVA projects, gardening, and much more.
  • Coaching individuals and groups of students on how to do poem recitation. Groups of her students have won first place at poetry slams. Two individual students achieved the remarkable honor of performing at the National Poetry Slam at the Apollo in New York, showcasing their talents on a prestigious stage.

Mrs. Carrasquillo and I have worked together for a number of years, and I am proud to be her colleague. She advocates for English Language Learners and all students, making sure each child receives the unique resources and accommodations he or she needs in order to be successful. She collaborates with general education teachers to make sure ELLs are serviced in every class, and holds her students to high expectations. She goes above and beyond to help our refugee and immigrant students and families. She is truly a life changing educator!

Mrs. Carrasquillo is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Mrs. Carrasquillo always takes the time to explain something to me and if I don't understand it she will think of a new approach to explain the topic to help me better understand it. As a student having a speech impediment makes it difficult to do presentations and to speak to others. But, Mrs. Carrasquillo gave me the confidence to do it and I have gained more confidence in myself because of her. Mrs. Carrasquillo goes above and beyond with each of her students, she has helped me outside of the classroom be giving me advice on big life decisions (career choices, school, ets.). For Mrs. Carrasquillo teaching isn't just a job but a true calling she is devoted to her students and is willing to go the extra mile always for all of her students. I am so thankful to have a teacher like her.

She cares about us and wants us to do our best. She keeps our class excited by doing many hands-on projects and arts and crafts. This makes learning more fun and helps me understand better. Because of her, I speak and write English with more confidence, and I feel happy to come to class every day.
