As a teacher, Ms. Walters creates a positive classroom environment by encouraging class conversations and fostering collaboration among her fourth graders. She provides regular opportunities for students to share their thoughts, ask questions, and respectfully listen to one another during discussions, which helps them feel valued and heard. By incorporating group activities and partner work, she promotes teamwork and peer learning, allowing students to build strong social skills and learn from diverse perspectives. This collaborative approach not only strengthens academic understanding but also nurtures a sense of community, trust, and mutual respect within the classroom.

Her classroom serves a diverse group of students from low-income backgrounds, many of whom face daily challenges that go beyond academics, including limited access to necessities like hygiene products, nutritious food, appropriate clothing, and basic school supplies. These unmet needs can significantly affect their focus, confidence, and overall well-being, making it harder for them to succeed in school. An example of this was last year, when she had a student who had lice three times due to her family not being able to afford treatment. Ms. Walters used her own money to purchase treatment materials for the student.

She also had a very low-income student who brought an old football to recess every day. One day, a student kicked it on top of the gym roof, which the teachers couldn't access. Ms. Walters went to the store and bought him a new football because he couldn't afford to buy one.

Lastly, she often purchases snacks to keep in a snack basket in her classroom. The students didn't eat lunch until 12:30, so the teachers allowed students to bring snacks to eat. The majority of her homeroom students were labeled as economically disadvantaged and were not able to bring snacks to school, nor could they purchase any. Students can't perform at their best if they're hungry. Due to this, Ms. Walters always made sure she had snacks available for her students.
