Mr. Smith believes creating a positive classroom environment is something he prioritizes every day. He starts by building strong relationships with his students, getting to know them individually, showing genuine interest in their lives, and making sure they feel seen, heard, and valued. He greets them at the door with a smile, uses their names often, and consistently models respect, kindness, and patience. He also establishes clear expectations and routines early on, which helps create a sense of safety and structure.

His classroom is a place where students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes, because they know they'll be supported, not judged. He reinforces a growth mindset by celebrating effort as much as achievement and encouraging collaboration and peer support.

Equity and inclusion are at the core of his practice. He makes sure that all students feel represented in the classroom materials and discussions, and he adapts his teaching to meet diverse learning needs. He also incorporates student voice and choice whenever possible, so they feel a sense of ownership in their learning. Ultimately, he wants every student to feel like they belong, like they matter, and like they are capable of great things, and he works intentionally each day to create that atmosphere.
