Mr. Mayfield, who has won the Teacher of the Year award at Columbiana Middle School, believes in a mentor mindset. His view is that teachers can primarily teach through an enforcer, protector, or mentor mindset. Mr. Mayfield uses the mentor mindset and has a unique approach. He tells the students that he's a track coach. He calls a student up and pretends his desk is a hurdle. A protector removes the hurdle, deciding the kid can't do it. When you lower your standards, the kids ultimately suffer. An enforcer says, "This is the standard, and you have to hit it!" There's little to no support. However, a mentor sets an appropriate hurdle height for the student, but also coaches the student to clear it. So, he sets a suitable standard, but then does all he can to help students clear that mark.

Mr. Mayfield is an incredible teacher. He has taught both of my daughters and currently coaches my youngest. Jason gets to know his students so that he can tap into what motivates them. And then he uses that relationship to help them grow. More importantly, he teaches them how to motivate themselves so they can accomplish their goals. He has an innate sense of when to push a student to do more and when to slow down and let them catch up. He cares deeply about each student and works tirelessly to help each one find their specific path to success. He constantly goes above and beyond. There is no doubt that teaching is his calling. He has changed the lives of my children and, in turn, he has changed my life. I am eternally grateful for the difference he has made in the lives of my children and in the lives of so many others. Jason Mayfield is a life changer.

Mr. Mayfield is truly one of a kind. As one of his Gifted students at CMS he challenged me to think differently, approach problem-solving in creative ways, and strive for excellence in all areas of life. Now as an adult, I still reference the lessons I learned under his instruction and encouragement. I am thankful to have had him on my team, and know he changes others' lives every day as well.

I have known Mr. Mayfield since 2019, he truly inspires his students to be and do their best. He takes the time to get to know each of his students and teaches them in a way that they can understand. Mr. Mayfield is truly one of the best teachers and leads by example and goes above and beyond for his school and his students.
