Donnie Walker was nominated anonymously.

Mr. Walker, who won both the Rookie Teacher of the Year and Teacher of the Year awards for his school, believes in creating a positive classroom environment for his students. On the first day of school, he focuses on creating a welcoming, engaging, and structured environment by building positive relationships with his scholars. Mr. Walker begins by introducing himself to students, not just as their teacher, but as a person. He shares aspects of his personal life, journey, and passion for history, which helps and encourages students to open up and feel seen.

To set the tone for the year, Mr. Walker establishes classroom norms and expectations, co-creating a culture of respect, accountability, and mutual support. He believes students thrive when they understand the boundaries and the opportunities that exist within a structured yet nurturing space. He lives by example, as well. He has won the perfect attendance award for four consecutive years.

To bring history to life, Mr. Walker transforms his classroom into a dynamic, interactive learning space—a "history museum" of sorts. With visuals, artifacts, music, and themed décor, he creates a sense of "edutainment" where education meets entertainment. This immersive environment not only sparks curiosity but also helps students emotionally and intellectually connect with the content from day one. Mr. Walker's goal is simple: to make every scholar feel valued, inspired, and ready to learn from both the past and each other.
