Music that Describes Rebecca

What if the key to unlocking fluent Spanish speakers lies not just in vocabulary lists, but in the science of how we learn to read and acquire language? Language acquisition has evolved; tools grounded in research and authentic experiences are in, while dated textbooks are out. In Ms. Hesson's classroom, she and her students are moving beyond rote memorization and translation drills. Instead, they read, write, listen, and speak Spanish in a variety of authentic contexts. Her goal is to help students internalize the language in a way that supports both fluency and comprehension using a research-backed curriculum approach.

Around 25% of Ms. Hesson's students are English Language Learners who are engaged in an immersive experience with the English language, and their studying of additional languages should mirror an authentic context as much as possible. She sees success for students with speech and language disabilities using novels by Blaine Ray.

Blaine Ray is the inventor of Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) and creates engaging novels that use cognates that students can recognize instead of memorizing a long list of vocabulary. These novels are stories that come alive. Students relate to the characters and are anxious to find out what happens next. They create opportunities for students to reenact scenes and hear words and phrases repetitively, among other variations of comprehensible input and output that lead to actual language fluency. TPRS aligns with the Science of Reading (SoR), which uses effective, understandable input and repetitive story structures to support language acquisition and literacy development.

Students are motivated to read engaging stories they can understand, and Ms. Hesson's classroom experience demonstrates the students' love of Blaine Ray's novels. She implements a variety of reading strategies that can strengthen comprehension and improve reading scores overall. When students are motivated to read, they have improved comprehension and reading outcomes.

By incorporating TPRS and Blaine Ray's novels into her classroom and SoR strategies, Ms. Hesson aims to transform how her students experience language acquisition. This approach allows them to engage with Spanish in meaningful, memorable ways that foster long-term fluency and confidence.

Rebecca is exemplifies what it means to be a leader (in the classroom, on the court, and in her personal life). She is the perfect example of someone who was destined to be a community leader and her character and compassion are evident in everything she does. To know her is to love her! She is an American treasure!

Mrs. Hesson was hands down the best and my favorite teacher when i was in high school. She made the classroom fun and made coming to school enjoyable for me. She had such a unique teaching style and the way she carries herself and her family really helped me do better in my life. She made me understand spanish when i was struggling. She made time for me when she had other students plus a life at home. She’s also an amazing volleyball coach ! She really cares for other people and it helped change my perspective in life. She’s truly an amazing person!

Ms. Hesson has taught me all the Spanish I know. She’s patient, thinks outside the box, and doesn’t leave anyone behind. The inclusivity she brings to teaching is what makes every student shine and grow in their own journey in fluency and confidence that carries on long after school is over.

Mrs. Hesson was my Spanish teacher and volleyball coach for multiple years. I learned many things from her about culture, language, and life in general. She truly changed many aspects of my life. I originally took Spanish as an elective for graduation but in her classroom she gave me the space and support to explore new thingsand make mistakes. She encouraged me to get better every semester. Now, I am able to understand casual conversations in Spanish. She truly cares about her students and has a passion for the Spanish culture, when she is out of the classroom the students notice!! Please support her in inspiring this generation!

I’ve observed Rebecca using Blaine Ray’s Brandon Brown books in her classroom. The students like reading them and identify with the main character. In one book, Brandon breaks his mom’s cell phone, lies, and has to deal with the consequences. Very relatable for middle school kids.
