Ms. Leonard is a dedicated educator who creates an inclusive and welcoming classroom by intentionally involving all students in meaningful activities. At the start of each school year, she takes the time to build relationships with both students and their families, using that knowledge to tailor lessons and celebrations that reflect the diverse backgrounds of her class.
One moment that stands out in Ms. Leonard’s teaching journey came during the holidays, when a student who didn’t celebrate Christmas expressed heartfelt gratitude for being included in alternative classroom activities, something they had never experienced before. Her commitment to equity and inclusion ensures that no student feels left out, especially during moments that can be isolating for those with different cultural or religious traditions.
In her day-to-day interactions, Ms. Leonard makes small yet impactful efforts to build a positive learning environment. With many of her English Language Learners being Spanish speakers, she incorporates both English and Spanish into her classroom communication. For students who speak other languages, she learns simple greetings in their native tongues to ensure every child feels seen and valued. Understanding that many students face challenges outside the classroom, Ms. Leonard goes above and beyond to maintain a stocked classroom store where students can use earned Dojo Points to "purchase" fun prizes and snacks.
Even while managing her own financial constraints, she prioritizes this system as a way to teach responsibility, kindness, and generosity. Many students use their rewards to bring joy to their families, gifting items to parents or sharing with siblings, reinforcing connections that extend beyond the classroom. Through compassion, cultural awareness, and consistent support, Ms. Leonard fosters a space where students feel safe, respected, and empowered to thrive.
