She teaches the IB (International Baccalaureate) Learner Profile Attributes to show students to be caring, risk-takers, good communicators, knowledgeable, open-minded, balanced, principled, thinkers, and inquirers which leads to global citizens who are creating a kinder world. Ms. Whorton wants to increase flexible seating options so that students are comfortable and more focused on the learning tasks. Her class is working on a community garden project which gives her students hands-on experience in math and science. This project also teaches students about the importance and benefits of growing their own food. The ultimate goal with this project (service as action) is to bring fresh food into the homes of her students. This project will also allow students to take ownership, not only in their learning, but in creating healthy habits. In addition, she has implemented Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports programs in two schools. Students earn points for positive actions, choices and behaviors. Points are used to purchase items from the PBIS store.
