I worked with Ms. Clauss with her English classes through the DC Tutoring and Mentoring Initiative. Ms. Clauss goes above and beyond for her students. The amount of time and care she invests in her students is unlike anything I’ve seen. Ms. Clauss puts in extra time at nights and over the weekends for her students. She genuinely wants her students to do well, and they respond accordingly. She creates a safe atmosphere in her classroom where students can feel free to participate. Any class I work with in the future, I will model after Ms. Clauss’ style. I don’t believe there is anyone more deserving for the LifeChanger of the Year than Yaqueline Clauss.
Ms. Clauss most certainly is a Life changer. While at Anacostia she supported and nurtured the migrant students. She made them feel comfortable and showed them how to make friends even through their language barriers. Ms. Clauss was always available to assist me with communicating with the families even in the evenings and weekends. She helped them understand that even with a language barrier, they could still excel and they did, educationally and socially. Ms . Clauss is very deserving of this honor.
Ms. Clauss is most definitely a “Life Changer” in the lives of her fortunate students and lucky colleagues who all grow by being in the radiance that Ms. Clauss brings to her instructional space. My sister and I were lucky to have Ms. Clauss as our teacher for the whole year. She is one of the nicest people, not only in the learning process but as a person in general. I can't recall a single moment seeing her mad or disrespectful. Ms. Clauss is always smiling, she is organized, capable of finding an approach to different students, everyone was welcomed to share thoughts, and especially encouraged to talk about the home country's culture. When the terrible military conflict began in my country, she was one of the first people to ask about me and my relatives. That is a moment I remember and truly appreciate. My sister and I have no doubt that Ms. Clauss deserves recognition for her kindness.
Life Changer Nomination - Sra. Clauss “The Light that Sparked my Path” ?
There are some people in this world who don’t just do their jobs—they live their purpose. And when they do, the impact is undeniable. Ms. Yaqueline Clauss is one of those rare, extraordinary souls. Her influence on my life—and the lives of so many others—is so deep, so personal, and so transformative, that words almost feel too small. But I’ll do my best, because she deserves the world to know what kind of light she is.
I first met Ms. Clauss as my high school Spanish teacher. But from the very beginning, she was more than an educator—she was a force of love, advocacy, and belief. She didn’t just teach language; she celebrated it. Through multilingual word walls and cultural exchanges, she validated our voices—whether they were spoken in English, Spanish, Amharic, French, or any other language. Her classroom became a home for those who often feel like outsiders. She made it a sanctuary of identity, culture, and joy.
Ms. Clauss created and hosted the International Exchange Club, a beautiful space where students from diverse backgrounds could share their cultures, holidays, food, and traditions. She invited the world into our school and gave us permission to be proud of who we are. I was proud to co-host this club with her—it was a privilege to be part of something that made students seen and heard.
But it didn’t stop there. Together, she and I advocated for ESL students who weren’t getting the same support or curriculum that English-speaking students had. While others dismissed their struggles, Ms. Clauss fought for them. We fought for them—on panels, in meetings, in front of those who had power. She gave me the courage to speak truth to power when it mattered most.
And then she changed my life in another way.
I had missed out on a trip to Puerto Rico in middle school, and I was determined to study abroad in high school. Ms. Clauss believed in that dream. She didn’t just cheer me on—she made it happen. She connected me with a program, guided me every step of the way, and made sure I got to go to Peru. That experience lit a fire in me that still burns today. Because of her, I went on to become a traveling animal caretaker, earned my travel agent certificate, started a mobile hairstylist business, and I’m now preparing to study abroad. Every passport stamp, every new adventure—I owe to her.
Ms. Clauss didn’t just change my path—she changed how I see myself. She made me believe I could go anywhere. Do anything. And she did it all with a heart so full of kindness and sincerity that you can feel it in every word, every hug, every encouragement. If she sees something that reminds her of you, she’ll send it. She’ll put you on to opportunities. She’ll tell you how proud she is, how amazing you are—because she means it.
This woman is love in action. She is a light for those in the dark. She gave us community, gave us belief, gave us ourselves. I thank God for her existence every day. I truly believe she is a divine blessing sent to guide, to uplift, and to change lives—and that is exactly what she has done.
Please understand: this nomination is not just deserved—it’s ordained. If there is anyone worthy of being called a LifeChanger, it is Ms. Yaqueline Clauss. She has already changed mine. And I love her with all my heart. As a brown girl from an immigrant family, I didn’t exactly grow up with a whole squad who looked like me or got me—and somehow, Ms. Clauss became that one unexpected hype woman who handed me a mirror and a passport and said, “Go be great, explore yourself... and don’t forget to pack snacks“! ii love snacks ??
With gratitude beyond measure!
-The Duchess of D.C. ??

Yaqueline Clauss saved her son's life.
She is not only a Life Changer as an educator, she is a literal Life Saver as a mother. I met Yaqueline during the time her son was afflicted with a life-threatening medical condition. As I understand she has done for students, she was determined, relentless and persistent in advocating for him. Yaqueline consistently encountered obstacles with the medical profession and insurance companies in her tireless efforts to get her son the treatment he so desperately required. Refusing to take no for an answer and a conducting nation-wide research, Yaqueline ultimately found the proper medical facility for her son' condition. She never left his side for weeks.
One would hope her son's positive health outcome would be the end of such a frightening and challenging medical saga. But no.
Yaqueline then spent months pursuing insurance coverage entitled to her under the relevant contract. At every turn, she was denied. Then denied again. And again. And again. Only because of her insistence the company honor its obligations was she was successful in receiving reimbursement for the coverage which she and her son had paid for.
Yaqueline is a sterling role model for others to live your values, champion justice and fairness, and live a life of purpose and caring.
A Life Changer. And a Life Saver.
I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering with Jackie this school year on multiple occasions and I’d like to speak about some very special things that I’ve seen and learned.
Not until this year have I realized how much these kids need. And often times how much their family needs as well.
The support caring and love in addition to the curriculum itself that Jackie gives her students is beyond anything I’ve ever seen or even expect from a teacher.
And I believe that more people should know about this so that more lucky children could benefit from the teachings and guidance of Ms Clauss.
Hours and hours of her own time I’ve seen Ms Clauss invest into her classroom and students to them the extra tools needed to not just survive but succeed in this ever changing and challenging world.
DCPS needs to know what an amazing teacher Jackie is to then better serve the ones that need it most. The students.

Miss Claus ability to reach students where they are and bring them forward is a amazing skill that she possesses.
Her caring demeanor and linguistic understanding allows the student to feel comfortable in her class. Learning a new language can often be challenging and one of the ways that she does it is by celebrating the student success and encouraging them in their failures, and this allows her students to participate without fear or shame.
Es muy grato tener personas cercanas que llenan de alegría, saber que con esfuerzo y dedicación da a conocer nuestra cultura, mil felicitaciones por tan excelente trabajo .
I volunteered with Ms. Clauss this past spring at a local high school working with spanish-speaking students on their english. Ms. Clauss was nothing but supportive to the students and me, and it was clear that she really cared about their progress and well-being. She took time whenever she could to work with students one-on-one and help them at their level of understanding, and spent money of her own on school supplies and an end of year party. There is no doubt in my mind she positively impacted each and every student she worked with, and helped me personally gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of teaching.
Ms. Yaqueline Clauss was one of my ESL colleagues at Wilson High School
(now Jackson-Reid High School) in Washington, D.C. It was truly a privilege and a

Moreover, she garnered the respect and admiration of both her students and colleagues alike. Ms. Clauss is an outstanding educator in every sense and is most deserving of the prestigious honor, Life Changer of the Year.
I have known Ms. Clauss during my time as a teaching colleague in DCPS. I know her as a passionate and respected educator who is committed to the success of her students and to creating a welcoming, fun and inclusive learning environment. Ms. Clauss is a learner and a professional. Although we never worked together in a school, we attended several professional development opportunities together and consulted each other often. Ms. Clauss presented an effective professional development session on using students' home languages as strengths and learning tools in the classroom. Although I have since retired, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and grow with and from Ms. Clauss in our professional development journeys. Furthermore, I appreciated her feedback on curriculum projects. I strongly support Ms. Clauss’s nomination for the Life Changer of the Year award.

Throughout our time together, Ms. Clauss showed a deep commitment to building meaningful relationships with both new and returning students. Her approach was rooted in understanding each student’s unique needs—academically and personally—which allowed her to provide tailored support. In addition to connecting with students, she actively engaged with their families and teachers to develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing each learner’s success. Her dedication was evident in the thoughtful way she identified potential barriers to learning, assessed individual strengths and needs, and encouraged students to push beyond their comfort zones. Ms. Clauss was also a strong advocate within the school community, ensuring her students had access to the resources and supports necessary for optimal learning outcomes. Her unwavering passion and proactive approach made a lasting impact on the students and staff alike. For this reason, she is without a doubt, a LifeChanger and very deserving of this recognition!

Yaqueline is the kind of person you meet once and remember forever. Her warmth, her energy—it all stays with you. In my role, I get to support her with using technology in the classroom, and every time we work together, I see just how deeply she cares about her students. She’s always eager to learn and grow, not for recognition, but because she wants to give her kids the very best.
Yaqueline doesn’t just show up to teach; she shows up for her students, fully, consistently, and with heart. She puts in the extra time, asks the deeper questions, and always goes beyond what’s expected. I’ve seen her attend conferences and professional learning sessions with such focus and purpose, constantly thinking about how each idea might support her students better.
One day, I sat in her classroom while her students opened up about their fears. Her room became a safe place for them, not just physically, but emotionally. That’s who she is. Yaqueline creates spaces where students feel seen, valued, and protected. She’s not just changing lives, she’s shaping futures!
I have admired Ms. Yaqueline Clauss since the moment we met back in 2014. It was my first year of teaching Spanish and her support was truly unconditional, not only professionally but also as friends! I remember endless times that when I was feeling overwhelmed she stopped by my classroom or called me to check how I was doing. Her kind words, advices and support made me feel that I was not alone. I have always been grateful for those days that we were colleagues and friends. Yaqui are one of the rare people that from the moment you meet them they leave a mark on your heart. Yaqui is an outstanding educator who genuinely cares about her students, and always goes beyond the extra mile in and out of the classroom! Through the years she has worked hard, and I have been so happy and proud of all her well-deserved accomplishments. Yaqui is also a devoted mother, daughter, sister and friend! Everything she does comes from the heart. Without any doubt, Yaqui is a LifeChanger!
I am honored to support Yaqueline Claus’s nomination as LifeChanger of the Year. I met Yaqui over a decade ago when she was my advisee in the VIF program, and from the very beginning, she stood out as someone truly exceptional. She arrived in the U.S. as a single mother of two, with limited driving skills but a heart full of dreams and the kind of determination that would inspire even the most elite athletes.
Yaqui began her journey as a Spanish teacher in Wilkes County, where she immediately became an active and passionate educator. She not only engaged in all district initiatives but also collaborated with fellow language teachers to create memorable events like spelling bees and cultural festivals that brought language and culture to life through dance, food, and games.
She holds high standards for her students and has modeled the same for her own children, whom she raised with love, discipline, and relentless support. She guided them through school, helped them pursue scholarships, and saw them through college graduation. This is how Yaqui lives—every day with purpose, energy, and a vision for excellence.
She is constantly evolving: applying for professional development, refining her teaching skills, and holding herself to the same high expectations she sets for her students. Her positivity, generosity, and fearless spirit make her not only a phenomenal educator but a true life-changer. Her students are incredibly fortunate to have her by their side.
