Nancy Truman was nominated anonymously.

Ms. Nancy Truman serves as both the Special Education Director for her school district and a special education teacher for students in grades 6 through 13. As a former foster parent, she deeply understands the life-changing impact a dedicated special education teacher can have on students’ lives.

In her classroom, every student is welcomed, valued, and given a voice. She begins each class with a simple but effective check-in by asking students to indicate how they’re feeling with a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or sideways. She then follows up with anyone who signals they’re struggling, asking if there's anything she can do to help. Often, just being seen and asked makes a meaningful difference. When a student needs additional support, Ms. Truman collaborates with the school social worker, nurse, or other professionals to ensure they receive the care they need.
