Music that Describes Thomas
Thomas Basista was nominated by his spouse, Jenefer Basista.
Mr. Basista has been referred to by colleagues as the "Swiss Army Knife" of Boardman Glenwood Junior High School, as well as a coach, due to his constant source of facts, common-sense approach, and wisdom. Students enter Mr. Basista's class as seventh graders, new to the building and navigating the challenges of early adolescence. They quickly learn that their World History teacher is fair, encouraging, and teaches with genuine passion.
"Behind the scenes, I see a man who is deeply committed to making an impact. He wants his students to not only make connections between ancient world history and the modern world, but also to recognize their self-worth, make positive choices, and get involved in a school team or club at this influential age," said Mrs. Basista.
Mr. Basista is a teacher and coach for all students, dedicated to helping each and every one succeed. In the classroom, he brings in ancient games and topic-related puzzles for students to engage with as they enter or to work on when they finish their assignments. His classroom management fosters a peaceful and positive environment for all learners.
"Recently, we traveled with a group to Greece and Italy, visiting sites that align with his curriculum. We explored the Acropolis, climbed to the Parthenon, and visited the Olympic Stadium, as well as the Temples of Athena and Nike. We journeyed to Delphi, reaching the top at Apollo's stadium. Our travels also took us through small Greek villages, the Meteora Monasteries, and to the shores of the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. While in Italy, we explored the historic seaport village of Bari and then immersed ourselves in the rich history of Rome. We visited the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and the Roman Catacombs," said Mrs. Basista.
"Although I've heard Tom speak passionately about ancient history for years, witnessing his excitement as he saw, climbed, and experienced these historic sites firsthand was awe-inspiring. The high school students and recent graduates who traveled with us—many of whom had Mr. Basista in seventh grade—also enjoyed his enthusiasm. One student called the trip 'Mr. Basista's Super Bowl,' while another joked that he was like 'a kid in a candy store.' Tom was always at the front of the tour group, eagerly absorbing information, asking questions, and connecting what he learned to his classroom lessons. He soaked in the history firsthand, collected photos to share with students, and purchased 'souvenirs' like relic replicas and models to bring history alive in his classroom," said Mrs. Basista.
Outside of the classroom, Mr. Basista coaches Cross Country and Track with a philosophy centered on teaching the fundamentals, fostering a love for the sport, and building a supportive team culture. He takes great pride in sending athletes to the high school program who not only enjoy running but also have had successful seasons. After having Mr. Basista for World History, many eighth graders chose to join the team the following year, often inspired by their connection with him in the classroom. These students are motivated to get involved, primarily due to Mr. Basista's influence. Mr. Basista believes that there is great value in students developing a sense of self-worth through participation in clubs and teams outside the classroom.
Mr. Basista is a quiet leader with great foresight. He carefully considers situations and continually reflects on how to improve the experience for all students. At BGJHS, he serves on several planning committees, always seeking to enhance school and district events. Within his Social Studies team, he actively shares ideas, collaborates, and consistently develops new activities and materials.
"When many of the same students enter my sophomore English class, his lessons are echoed in my classroom, especially when we read The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. Traveling back in time in Mr. Basista's classroom is an experience that leaves a lasting impact on his students. He is truly a life changer - in the school, on the cross-country course, and on the track - and is deserving of the LifeChanger of the Year Award," said Mrs. Basista.
