John Free was nominated anonymously.
Coach Free is truly a cornerstone of his community. As the assistant coach for football, basketball, and track at Malakoff High School, he devotes countless hours to developing athletes and shaping young adults into strong, confident, and purpose-driven individuals. His commitment extends far beyond the field. He pours into his students during the school day and continues to mentor and support them long after the final bell rings.
In addition to his role in education and athletics, Coach Free is a deeply engaged member of his church. He serves faithfully in the youth ministry, including leading children at summer church camps where he brings joy, energy, and unwavering faith to every activity. His leadership is rooted in compassion and humility, and he's always the first to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement. His heart for mentorship shines brightly through his leadership of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at the high school.
His influence has been so powerful that last year, he was chosen as one of the Top 10's Most Influential Teachers for being an instrumental force in one of his athletes' academic and spiritual journey. He's been a part of one football state championship and advanced deep into the playoffs during his time at Malakoff. Still, his legacy isn't measured in wins. His legacy is found in the relationships he builds, the respect he earns, and the lives he quietly helps shape every day. Coach Free walks into every room with a smile that instantly lifts the atmosphere. He is a light in every space he enters, and his daily presence is a source of hope and encouragement to everyone around him.
"Coach Free has made a profound impact on the lives of students and families in the community. His service, compassion, and unwavering dedication make him more than deserving of this award. He doesn't just show up—he shows up with purpose, love, and a heart full of faith. Malakoff is blessed to have Coach Free," said the nominator.
He let me rant about all my problems when I didn’t think anyone was listening
John Free- A man of integrity and strength!
“The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.”
—Numbers 6:24–26
This is a victory moment! Walk forward with your head held high—God’s favor surrounds you, your name is cleared, and your future is bright. What God has for you is STILL on the way!
My son, what a blessing you are. I’m so proud of the man you’ve grown to be. Thank you for making this momma proud and for being an ambassador for Christ! Continue to share Jesus and lead by example. I love you!
I've only know John since the summer of 2025. In that short time he has exemplified the true spirit of a humble, Christian man who strives each day to make those in his life see a better tomorrow. He is truly deserving of this honor and I look forward to a lifetime watching him grow and touch the lives of others.
Coach Free is most deserving of this nomination. I know him to be a man of faith, and one who has a heart for the youth and the young people of his community. I’m proud to call Coach Free my friend.
Ive been so blessed to have Coach Free in my life, when I came into highschool as a freshman, I wasnt the best acting child and it spiraled down more when my grandmother had passed, but Coach Free talked to me everyday in gym class and spoke to me about Jesus. I was never raised in a religious household so I never really was close to God. The more faith Coach Free had in me and the more he spoke about God with me I became closer to God. I did not know at the time that one person could change your whole perspective on how the world is. Coach Free is that type of person his love of Jesus and the people around him. I would have bad days and I would just go to his classroom and cry to him and he would just sit and listen. I remember I came home after school and i told my mom he was my school dad lol. Coach Free has changed my life in the best ways possible. I am now a Senior about to graduate and going to college and wanting to go into the medical field. Coach Free isnt just a coach, hes a mentor, a friend, a school dad and many more. If it wasnt for Coach Free I wouldnt be where I was at today and im so very blessed God put a great mentor in my life to show me i can be who i say i can be!
My son was coached by Coach Free. He is one of the few that cares about his players not only on the field but off the field as well. I go to Church with him also where he is very involved with our youth. He is truly an amazing example of a Godly man and no matter at school or Church leads with Christian values. We are honored to have him in our community and schools.
I’ve had the privileged to be coached and mentored by Coach Free for the last three years. From the first day I met Coach Free one thing in particular stood out about him; his love for Jesus Christ and helping others. I moved to Malakoff my sophomore year, and prior to this I didn’t hold any knowledge about who Christ was. This all changed thanks to Coach Free investing in me. Coach Free is our FCA leader, and when I started to going at the end of my sophomore year and hearing how he taught the word of God it lead me to church. Which ultimately led me to forming a relationship with Jesus, and the ability to tell others about his love. None of this would’ve happened however if Coach Free didn’t plant the seed in me. Lastly, the ability of honesty that Coach Free has with his students is second to none. See my dad is Coach and has been my whole life, and in this time I’ve been around a ton of great Godly Men. However none of them made a connection with me like Coach Free, see no matter what I’m going through I know that if I reach out to Coach Free he will go through it with me. This year when I finished inside the top 10 ranking student in my class they informed us that we all got to pick a teacher who taught us the most about life. I knew instantly that there was not a better and more deserving person than Coach Free.
Great person and educator. Congratulations Coach Free.
I could talk about John for hours, but I’ll keep it brief. He has one of the biggest hearts I’ve ever seen—for his players and for every student he meets. He genuinely cares about their well-being and never hesitates to go the extra mile to help them succeed.

More than just a coach! Glad to call him a close friend!
John is a devoted coach and he truly deserves this award. He has a good and generous heart and that is rare these days.
Coach Free has taught me so much on my journey to know more about Jesus. He has so much wisdom. He started teaching me about God at the beginning on my junior year and all throughout the rest of high school. I have just recently given my life to Jesus and I couldn’t be happier that Coach Free was there to witness that. He is so kind and is so deserving of every good thing life has to offer him!!
Coach Free has impacted my life but being a great person to everyone. He is also a great coach that speaks a lot about Jesus Christ and spreads the Gospel.

I’ve known John since he was a young boy growing up with my daughter. He has always been a kind and caring individual. John is a man of integrity, a family man, and is beloved by all who know him. I know he is passionate about pouring into the lives of the kids he gets to teach, coach, and lead. He’s very deserving of this Life Changer recognition.
