Quentin "Q" Smith was nominated by April Rojo, a friend.
“I’m proud to nominate my friend Q for LifeChanger of the Year because he truly represents the best of the best. His ability to inspire students to embrace their most authentic selves is nothing short of remarkable. Q has a unique gift for making every child feel seen, valued, and empowered. His commitment goes far beyond the classroom. He shows up for after-school programs and weekend events, and he takes every opportunity to support and uplift his students. The kids absolutely love him, and it’s easy to see why. His energy, passion, and heart make him one-of-a-kind. Q doesn’t just teach - he transforms lives. He is the very definition of a LifeChanger,” said Rojo.
Quinten is such a great leader!! He is an amazing teacher that creates a safe space for his kids! He has gone above and beyond for years! Helping kids with mentors, holding after school jam sessions, esports, the cookout, graduations and just basically showing up for them in every capacity! I am so proud to know him!
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Quinten for 16 years, and it has been an honor to watch him grow into the educator he is today. He celebrates his students’ successes, takes it hard when things don’t go as planned, and cares deeply about each student he teaches, and many more that he doesn’t. I’ve met alumni of his who have gone on to follow their dreams, and it makes me incredibly proud to know him.
The most amazing person I know ! The best in his field !!
The first time I met Quentin I knew he was going to be a fantastic educator. I worked with his wife and the stories she told me about his classroom marveled me. I had just retired from teaching and was more than a little cynical, but his enthusiasm and creativity proved how much he cared about his students. Throughout the year I heard about how engaged and motivated his students were. His classroom decor matched his personality to a T. Those students got to see Q’s passion and pride on every wall. Unlike many teachers, his enthusiasm and commitment to his students has not waned since that first year. He continues to challenge, invigorate, and inspire every new class of students each year. I am proud to know Quentin and comforted in knowing teachers like this are in the classroom.
Mr.Smith is the best teacher OAT, and esports coach I’ve had. He’s very inspirational, community driven, and motivated to help whenever needed.
Q, I'm absolutely thrilled to see you nominated for Life Changer of the Year! Some people you just meet and instantly click with, and that was definitely you for me. Your energy is infectious from the get-go, and the way you teach with such love and care is truly inspiring. You're a genuinely good person, and this recognition couldn't be more fitting!
Mr. Smith is, without a doubt, the most welcoming and loving teaching on my High School campus. No matter who you are or what you do, he will always welcome you with open arms. He goes above and beyond to ensure each child and colleague feels safe and can see the best in everyone. He is firm when needed, kind in spirit, and fun every single day! It is a personal mission of his that no child feels “dumb” in his classroom, and he does a spectacular job at it. Every person has a place in his classes and I can’t wait to see the impact he continues to make on my community.
Quinten is genuinely one of the nicest (and coolest people) I know. I have the privilege of knowing him not only as a close friend, but as a fellow teacher. All I can really say is I don’t know a single person who pours all of their passion along with their professional expertise into their job quite like Quinten does. His students adore him, his coworkers are made better by his presence (including me), and his friends are lucky to be seen and loved by him. All in all, Q is a GOAT in his own right.
I am writing as a parent of a former student. My daughter met Mr.Smith in her junior year at Warren High School. She was taking a creative writing class that she couldn't stop talking about. He inspired her and encouraged her to "just do it!". In return she did write an entire book before she graduated. His name was mentioned more and more in my house. My daughter would come home excited and tell me what happened in class (not usual). He encouraged her to join the ea sports club, where she was president. She loved it and all the after school activities. This man plans events and shows up for his students. He came to her band performance and stood next to me, representing her as a senior. It meant the world to her and myself. He showed up for her graduation and I knew who she was looking for. I can't thank this man enough for helping my daughter come out of her shell and try everything until she found what made her happy. She has just graduated with an associates degree and is continuing her education. All of this would not have been possible, or as positive, without Mr.Smith. He deserves this award and the world. Thank you Mr. Smith!
Q is passion personified and his passion is for people as he pours his larger-than-life personality into his friends, family, community, and, most importantly, his students. I am lucky enough to call him a friend and can attest to his vibrancy and charisma, traits that he could easily use to command attention but instead chooses to disperse that spotlight onto others, highlight their successes, and ensure they feel seen. Each of us can name a handful of teachers in our life that has made a notable impact on us either academically and personally. Without ever having set foot in one of his classes it is still readily apparent that he frequently accomplishes both as he engages deeply with his students during both in class studies and after school programs including listening parties, Black History Month fundraising and festivities, E-Sports coaching, and more. It is my distinct pleasure to be able to highlight him for a change, and when it comes to someone who exemplifies excellence, positive influence, and leadership, I can think of no one better to call a LifeChanger than Quentin Smith.
Quinten is a friend of mine and I get to watch how much he loves his students and how he pours into them in the classroom, in after school clubs, in ESports, in hosting things like The Cookout, and many more. He is not only a wonderful teacher to his students but he is a lifeline to them, sharing music, movies, video games, and other art. The way Q shows up for his friends and family is exactly how he shows up for his students, and like April said he is the definition of a LifeChanger!
I never thought I was a good writer. Many teachers would tell me the bare minimum and push me aside. When I entered Mr. Smith’s class room for the first time I knew I was going to have a memorable school year. Mr. Smith gave me the confidence to refine my writing skills, and to become a better student. During my Highschool life, I would end up getting such high grades on my writing assignments in my Junior and Senior year. I have to thank Mr. Smith for that, if he didn’t give me the confidence I don’t know where I would have been academically in English. My writing skills even impressed my university professors, and I thank it all to him. Mr. Smith has inspired everyone and everybody. For any student to apart of his class, his clubs, or even a school event run by the man the myth the legend himself, it truly becomes an experience worth living over and over again.
Thank you Mr. Smith for all you’ve done for my student class of 2020. I hope you continue to leave an imprint on every students life, because if it weren’t for teachers like you, many of us would have given up.
Hands down, Mr. Smith is the most positive force on his entire campus. He routinely goes above and beyond for students as individuals and does everything he can to ensure no one feels alienated. I’ve personally watched and experienced the profound care and impact he has for his students (and the students of Warren High School as a whole.) He offers a safe space for those who need it, a collaborative space for those who seek it, and an open door for everyone. If every teacher was like Mr. Smith, I think the world would be a more compassionate and inclusive place.
This guy is a once in a lifetime experience. It sounds cheesy but genuinely I don’t think I have met anyone like him and I think that’s unique. He isn’t just a teacher he inspires people to be themselves but not in a typical way. Whenever he’s around his students and peers , you can see those around him always happy and being the best version of themselves. His joy and compassion for the people he holds around him are truly unmatched by anyone.
I am constantly inspired by Q’s dedication to his students. He commits to his extracurricular club teams, celebrates students’ graduations, and maintains meaningful mentor relationships with students post-graduation. Q enlists his network to make sure students have great cook outs, opportunities to travel for competitions, etc. he really goes above and beyond for his students! You go, Q!
Mr. Smith made my high school experience. He challenged and supported me like no other and I couldn’t have finished my senior year without him. Can’t think of someone more deserving of this award!
I’m ashamed to admit that I fully lack the adequate words to narrate how much of an impact Mr. Smith has had on my life; which is extremely ironic given the fact we met because he was my Creative Writing teacher. It was the year after COVID, my junior year, and my school had just brought back CW which had plopped me right in Mr. Smith’s class. At the time I didn’t know that I would have gained a mentor for life. Mr. Smith helped guide me through the hardships on high school and even the troubles going on in my personal life. In my junior year, I was extremely depressed and unbeknownst to many, placed on suite watch a couple of times. Just talking to Mr. Smith about trivial things such as anime or him indulging in my obsession with my favorite band at the time, brought life back into my soul. I’m in sophomore year of college now and I still reach out to Mr. Smith for guidance as if I’m still in his classroom. I don’t think there’s a teacher, well actually, a person who is deserving of so much love, recognition, and admiration. Mr. Smith truly is an inspiration and such a light on everyone, I hope that he continues to be respected and appreciated in his future endeavors.
I’ve been reflecting lately on the people who’ve made a lasting impact on my life, and I felt it was time I shared my appreciation.
Your Mythology class was where it started, but the lessons you taught me extended far beyond the textbook. You showed me what it meant to show up authentically, to carry myself with excellence, and to pursue my dreams with both heart and intention. I’ll never forget the way you created a space where I felt seen—especially during the moments I wasn’t okay. You never let me sit too long in sadness; instead, you always found a way to pull something meaningful, even magical, out of the heaviness.
Your support for my musical aspirations meant the world to me. You didn’t just encourage my art—you pushed me to make smarter decisions in both my personal and professional life. Whether it was a late conversation after class or a quiet challenge to reassess a habit that wasn’t serving me, you constantly reminded me of the bigger picture.
Your passion for anime and comic books lit something up in me. You reawakened my inner child, reminding me that curiosity and creativity are tools, not distractions. And through your genuine love of music, I began to develop a deeper, more refined appreciation for sound and storytelling.
Thank you for being more than a teacher—for being a mentor, a guide, and at times, a much-needed mirror. Your influence helped shape who I am today, and I carry so many of your lessons with me as I continue chasing what I love.
Much love,
Arizé
Quinten is my son in law. I am very proud of him. He truly loves his job and puts all he has into being a good teacher, mentor, and example to the students. He sacrifices hours of his free time to be present for activities with his students. Quinten not just supports the activities at the school that he is actively involved with but attends countless other events. It doesn’t matter if it’s choir, football or theatre if he has students involved in other programs he tries his best to be there to support them. No matter what he has going on he has time for any student anytime they need him. Anytime I have the opportunity to meet a current student or an ex-student that had him they always tell me how much Mr. Smith means to them. He knows each and every child that he teaches. Quinten is a life changer everyday. Our children need more like him.
This man IS a life changer! I have watched as he has impacted the lives of hundreds of students with care, compassion and interest. Quentin is incredible!
Quentin is able to inspire students to go well on their own imagined capabilities. Through education, encouragement, and inspiration, students achieve, successes, both educational and personal they could not imagine before coming in contact with Mr. Smith. Beyond the classroom, Quinten connects the wider community with the yearly Black History Month cookout. Some people think teachers are just there to facilitate learning. Quentin connects students and communities. Students who might be deemed as “troublemakers“ with no appreciation for their ability to achieve and exceed their own expectations of themselves as well as others expectations.
Mr Smith is the GT teacher at my (former) high school, and the impact he’s made on the entire campus of students can really be felt in just a short interaction with him. He makes everyone feel so involved and welcomed — he doesn’t just speak to us like students, he speaks to us like people, and actually takes time to get to know us as human beings. He genuinely brightens so many people’s lives and makes school a much more comforting, welcoming, and fun place.
I’m going to co-sign on everything Apryl said above about Quentin. I had the pleasure this year of working alongside him and his ISM class with one of his students. The impact that he makes on the students he works with every day is evident. His connection in amplifying his students to be their absolute best in all facets shows. He is one of a kind!
This is the kind of educator that pours his soul into his students. The kind of teacher who students talk about for the rest of their lives and the kind of educator that his peers admire. He’s a truly special person and an incredible teacher!
Q is everything you want in an educator and more. He leads with heart, shows up with purpose, and pours into his students in ways that leave a lasting impact. The way he empowers kids to be their truest selves is something really special. He’s not just changing lives, he’s shaping futures. Proud to support him for LifeChanger of the Year.
Quinten is absolutely a LifeChanger. His wit, humor, and kindness make him stand out as both an educator and a role model. Every student who has passed through his classroom has been impacted for life
Quinten is one of the most caring educators I have the pleasure of knowing. He makes it his mission to understand his students to support them on a fundamental level. In a world where it's so easy not to care, Quinten is doing the hard and important work of showing up with compassion to meet his students where they are. He ignites and fosters their creativity, allowing them to become the most successful version of themselves. The world needs more educators like Quinten.
I had the pleasure of working with one of Quentin's students through the forward-thinking mentorship program that he created at Warren. It's clear that he is a dedicated and committed teacher who goes above and beyond to help his students not just make it through high school but encourages them to push to the next level and follow their dreams, all with abundant authenticity and heart, which I can only imagine is difficult to come by in today's education system. Keep doing what you're doing, Quentin. We need more amazing teachers like you.
Quinten is the definition of a LifeChanger!! I’ve had the privilege of being his friend since high school, where I watched him positively impact the lives of so many of our friends with his knowledge, humor, and kindness. Now in our adult lives, I continue to see him change the lives of more students than I can count. He is the kind of friend and teacher that leaves a lasting impact, and if that’s not a LifeChanger, I don’t know what is. He really is the best of the best, and he deserves all the recognition!!
In middle school, my gifted and talented class was my favorite part of every school day. I looked forward to the community my classmates and teacher created, and to be able to share my creativity. So when none of my classmates chose to continue with the GT program in high school, I remember feeling very isolated and anxious to be in a new environment surrounded by people that I didn’t know. I had heard horror stories about the transition from middle school to high school and how rough it could be, and now that I had “lost” my comfort classroom, the idea became especially difficult for me. However, from the first day Mr. Smith’s class became the place where I felt the most comfortable. His way of instructing the class isn’t like your typical teacher, and that alone helped me feel more at ease in his classroom. He gave all of us time to warm up with each other, and allowed for us to get comfortable before trying to “break the ice” like most of our teachers. He gave us so many resources and so much knowledge to help us better adjust to high school and was (and still is) always there to help his students! He still works super hard during and outside of school in order to really support his students and show up in all the ways that count. I’m entering my senior year, and I honestly couldn’t imagine what any of us would do without Mr. Smith! He offers us many opportunities to prepare us for our journeys after high school, and also offers us opportunities to have pride in our school. He’s always there to support his students and tells us to “never qualify our work”. His constant support encourages us all to try our best. I continue to take his classes every year because I know that I’ll be comfortable in his classroom regardless of the course, and that he is a teacher that truly cares. Thank you Mr. Smith for all that you do!!
I’ve been a student of Mr. Smith’s for the past three years and although I’ve just graduated, he’s never stopped being both my teacher and friend. Mr. Smith is an educator who truly does go above and beyond for students with a passion for teaching that I’ve never seen elsewhere. Mr. Smith always keeps his classroom open for his kids: whether they need a place to work, interact with others, or get some helpful advice, Mr. Smith is always available. He’s been there for me through numerous academic and personal breakdowns and has always been able to help calm me down and redirect my thinking. Mr. Smith’s class was one of the few reasons I was excited to come to school since he truly wanted all of his students to learn and understand, rather than just putting pressure on a letter grade. He’s changed my life in more ways than I can explain. He’s helped me write essays that have awarded me half a million dollars in scholarships. He’s written me letters of recommendation which helped me get into Rice University on a full ride scholarship. He helped me write my valedictorian speech when I pushed it off to the last minute. But most importantly, he’s always been there for me when I needed a shoulder to cry on for any reason. Mr. Smith is an incredible teacher who leaves a huge impact on any student that enters his classroom, even if they aren’t technically in his class. Everyone knows his name because of his involvement and commitment to generating school spirit. There is no other teacher in the world who fits the definition of LifeChanger as well as Mr. Smith.
I first met Mr Smith my Sophmore year of high school. He wanted me to join his GT2 class so bad he got the class moved to my lunch period just so I could join. That is only a fraction of the persistence and effort he makes for every student. As I finished my final years of school, he truly became an integral part of every day. He had an preternatural way of teaching through us. There was a time I went to him completely shaken because I was extremely burnt out, instead of pushing away my feelings he let me embrace them and led me to an understanding of my emotions and a solution without straight up giving it to me. That’s exactly the type of teacher he is. He lets every student experience, fail, learn, and grow without giving them a step by step guide. In doing so, he truly understood every student had a unique way of learning. If a student was struggling on an assignment he always worked with us to come to a solution that worked for both of us. It’s so clear that Mr Smith, with every fiber of his being, loves teaching. And most of loved every single student that stepped into his classroom. Even if a student didn’t have his class, he was more than welcoming and always made his space, our space.
Quinten is absolutely amazing, one of my best friends, and truly a Life Changer. He has such passion for teaching and has created incredible safe spaces for all students. He connects with every individual he talks to on such a personal level and shows his authentic self, empowering others to do the same. Quinten is a wonderful person and deserves this award more than anyone.
Q is the best teacher I know because he truly cares about his students.
