As Desert Wind's ESS Department Chairperson and English Language Arts (ELA) Resource Teacher for 8th-grade students, Mr. Balilu has relentlessly supported teachers. He empowers educators to refine their instructional approaches by helping with individualized education plan (IEP) writing, leading meetings, sharing instructional strategies, offering classroom management tips, and facilitating professional development training.
A master at tailoring instruction to meet each student's unique needs, Mr. Balilu employs various strategies—including differentiated learning, Literary Circles, Socratic Seminars, Thinking Maps, Media Presentations, and various writing activities—to engage students with diverse learning styles and abilities. By fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment, he helps students reach their full potential.
Beyond his role in the classroom, Mr. Balilu is a dedicated mentor and coach to his colleagues. Being named Arizona Special Educator Rising Star shows his dedication and passion for students with disabilities. He does not teach for recognition, yet recognition naturally follows his hard work. Mr. Balilu is a true Life Changer who transformed my world at a time when I felt silenced by my learning disability. Before I entered his classroom, reading and writing were constant struggles that left me frustrated and unable to understand the world around me, but he stayed by my side all the way, providing the patience and specialized tools I needed to finally find my voice. His impact reached far beyond my desk, offering my family a sense of hope and a roadmap for my future that we never thought possible. Even as I move to a different district, I carry the confidence and skills he helped me build, and while I will miss him incredibly much, I am forever changed by the teacher who everyone rightly calls the heartbeat of our school.
Mr. Balilu is an amazing human being. He is very dedicated teacher and department chair leading the Special Education team to success. He makes sure that our students with disabilitties get the best of learning and education through the relentless support of all stakeholders. He would always say that "we need to teach students learn various strategies to help them self-manage their disabilities, so when they leave the classroom walls, they will be ready to stand, advocate for themselves, and succeed." He continues to assist us in the department how we can help and support our ESS kids for them to succeed. Because of his dedication, he was recently recognized as Arizona Special Educator Rising Star award and Council for Exceptional Children Rising Star Award- he won both in state and national levels. He will be recognized at Salt Lake City, Utah during the CEC National Convention in March 2026 and everyone is very excited for him. We are very proud of Mr. Balilu. First, Mr. Balilu handles his ESS classes like a champ. Day in and day out, he plans and gives his students activities that are both necessary and challenging. Moreover, he continuously breaks the norms by not settling for the minimum, for he believes in his students and their potential. Another reason why he is a LifeChanger is his selfless commitment to education. As if his leadership inside the classroom is not exhausting enough, he also provides training and technical assistance to his colleagues every chance he gets. May it be inside their classroom during passing period or at the cafeteria during breaks, Mr. Balilu incessantly shares and inspires people around him by listening to their challenges and providing wise solutions, when asked. And lastly, he is a good friend with a kind heart. As his colleague and friend, I always receive random messages of encouragement or just a simple, "How are you?" Furthermore, he helped me change my life's trajectory by believing in me and in my capabilities as an educator. Sometimes, I wonder where he gets his energy from since I know how busy he is at school and at home with his family and kids. Not once did he forget how to be a good friend and an even greater supporter and cheerleader.
