"Guidance counselors support students navigating academic, social, and personal challenges. Their work extends beyond scheduling classes and offering college advice; they provide a safe space for students to express their concerns and receive compassionate guidance. Whether helping students overcome anxiety, cope with family difficulties, or discover their strengths, guidance counselors act as mentors and advocates. Their ability to listen, offer perspective, and provide actionable solutions makes a profound difference in a student's growth and confidence," said the student.

"Mrs. Whelan knew I struggled with making friends and keeping those connections during my years at elementary school. I worked with her through everything; she was always there for me and offered to help before I could even ask. She just knew what I was thinking and jumped into action. She worked with me through everything. I hated coming to school because I struggled to make and keep friends. Every day was a different challenge that she showed no fear of overcoming. At one point, I hid in my closet and refused to go to school. I always felt alone walking the halls of the school, with constant bullying and not being able to make friends. Mrs. Whelan always brought a smile to my face, and she even had the coolest office. We made goals, worked together for years, and overcame so many obstacles," the student said.

"Guidance counselors play a pivotal role in shaping students' lives during their formative years. Among them, Mrs. Whelan, who was a dedicated guidance counselor during my elementary years, stands out as an extraordinary figure deserving recognition. Her unwavering commitment to supporting students' emotional well-being, fostering growth, and creating a kind environment exemplifies the profound impact educators and counselors can have on young minds. First and foremost, Mrs. Whelan's empathetic nature made her an indispensable presence in the lives of her students. In moments of uncertainty and vulnerability, she consistently provided a listening ear and offered genuine care and understanding. Her ability to connect with students on a peronal level–creating a safe space where they could express their thoughts and emotions–was instrumental in helping me navigate challenges. Mrs. Whelan helped me have positive interactions with kids my age when I struggled with making friends. She never doubted me and always gave me enough confidence to continue. She had me come into her office during lunchtime and bring a few of my closest friends. Her dedication to individualized support underscored her belief in the potential of every child, especially me–a philosophy that inspired countless students to believe in themselves. Her innovative programs and activities united students, promoting teamwork, empathy, and a shared sense of purpose. Whether it was reading kindness books or providing a safe space for those who relied on her, me being one of them, her efforts made an impact, not just on me, but on all her students," said the student.
