"During my time in and outside of school, I have been fortunate to have great educators who have positively impacted my life, helping me succeed and reach my goals. An educator's goal is to teach you information in specific subjects, right? While that is true, in my experiences, educators have gone far beyond by making genuine connections and teaching me life lessons. I know that all of my educators are meaningful as I continue to write the story of my life. One of these educators, in particular, was an ACT (American College Testing) tutor I had leading up to the testing that occurred this spring. I could instantly tell that this person was not just an educator but someone caring, someone I could lean on," said the student.
"The first day I entered her house for tutoring, she shared a vulnerable story for which I expressed oceans of empathy and sorrow. My life has had waves, but her story put mine into perspective. Her courage and strength showed me that it is possible to get through difficult times. Her name is Mrs. Eckhert, or, as I know her, Lori. As an educator, keeping the student engaged in the learning process is important. She made every subject enjoyable and interesting as she went over each answer and explained it thoroughly. If I was still confused about the answer, she would repeat it and try to explain it differently. The learning was very customized and was set at a self-guided pace, which allowed for plenty of time for me to ask questions," said the student.
"It should be equally important that the student and teacher get along well and create a personal connection. Lori has always been very patient and understanding with me, even before I was diagnosed with ADHD. She is very encouraging and passionate in all the subjects that she teaches. When I felt lost or confused, she gave me faith. When I needed someone to talk to, she was always available. We even created a saying for when I have test anxiety to make me feel better. She was always on my shoulder when I needed help testing. When I took the ACT test for the first time this spring, I scored high! I can contribute parts of the score to what she taught me. I am beyond grateful to have such a wonderful tutor and person in my life," said the nominator.
