Omar Edwards was nominated by Annie Clark, a member of the community.
As a Manatee County native, Mr. Edwards was educated in the public schools. He joined the local Boys Club in Bradenton when he was six and participated in many events. With the support of his family and the Club, he excelled in school and participated in three sports at Southeast High School, receiving a full scholarship to play football at Ole Miss upon his graduation in 1993. While attending Ole Miss, he earned two bachelor's degrees - one in Public Administration and the other in Social Work. His commitment to public service led him to many community projects.
After college, he began his career in education as a Career Counselor and later as a Program Manager for high school students at Manatee Technical Institute, which inspired him to earn his master's degree in Educational Leadership. This experience led him to two areas close to his heart - the Boys and Girls Club and Manatee County School District. He has served both children and parents of Manatee County as a counselor, Program Manager, Middle and High School principal, and Assistant Director at Manatee Technical College. He is currently the Associate Director of Strategic Planning and Initiatives for Manatee County School District.
As a faithful community servant, Mr. Edwards is an excellent motivational speaker for community events, presenting on topics focused on youth empowerment, college and career readiness, and the "How to Dress to Impress" program. Mr. Edwards also volunteers at the local toy drives, Easter Egg Hunts, and Health Screening Fairs and serves on various Boys and Girls Club committees. During football season, you can find him as a volunteer coach at Bayshore and Palmetto High Schools. Mr. Edwards is a member of Rogers Community United Methodist Church in Bradenton, a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and a Manatee Chamber of Commerce Education and Workforce Committee member. He is also Chairman of the Boys and Girls Club of Manatee County Corporate Board, a team member in the accreditation process for schools, and a member of the Association for Curriculum Development and Advanced Education Accreditation Committee.
Mr. Edwards believes his upbringing has brought him to where he is in life. His mother and grandmother taught him to treat people how he wanted to be treated and to do what's right, even if it may be unpopular.

From my very first meeting with Omar a few months ago, I left with four pages of notes and one big question: How does one person do this much good—with this much enthusiasm?

It is a pleasure to know Omar! His leadership skills demonstrate communication, integrity and the ability to motivate others. He organized a College Tour event calendar that included 3 mandatory workshops for interested students, in preparation for the Manasota Pan-Hellenic Council college tour. I had the opportunity to attend this college tour with him this year on President's Day, along with 52 students on a chartered bus. Five other chaperones accompanied us in a separate vehicle. We toured the campuses of Florida A & M University in Tallahassee and Albany State University in Albany, Georgia. His energy, enthusiasm, and love for the students was evident throughout the tour. He is a role model for students of all ages.

His accomplishments and achievements are legendary through his Youth Development work, Black Men mentoring, and community engagement activities.
