Melissa Bays was nominated by her colleague, Cliff Reder.
Ms. Bays is a specialized academic instructor at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School in Gardnerville, NV. In her role, she focuses on teaching students with diverse learning abilities, emphasizing essential life skills, self-advocacy, independence, and the development of friendships and connections. She is a passionate advocate for inclusive education, dedicated to integrating her students into general education classes, elective events, and clubs.
She collaborates closely with a range of elective and core subject teachers to promote her students' integration and autonomy throughout the school environment. Celebrating student milestones and creating opportunities for individuals with diverse learning abilities to engage meaningfully in school and the community is central to her mission. She works alongside families, care providers, and community resources to prepare students for a positive and productive future.
"This LifeChanger Award would enable her and her students to further their initiatives, ensuring that all students thrive in an inclusive educational setting. Melissa would also use this award to create a Sensory Room. Sensory rooms offer a calm space for students who feel overwhelmed or anxious, helping them to relax and regain control before situations escalate. With soft lighting, soothing sounds, and comfortable seating, this room lowers stress and anxiety levels. Students can identify their triggers and use the sensory room to manage their emotions effectively," said Reder.

Over the years, I have gotten to know Melissa through family. Frequently, conversations have centered around our shared profession, teaching in the demanding field of special education.
