Bradley Thompson was nominated by Eric and Robin Anderson, who are students' parents.

For almost 50 years, Mr. Thompson has taught children in grades K-12 about leadership, interdependence, and excellence using the vehicles of music and drama. Each high school performing group under his instruction has its own presidency (President, Vice President, Secretary, and two Treasurers). Mr. Thompson trains the presidencies in their duties and leadership using approaches recognizable to anyone familiar with scouting and Stephen Covey. He then steps back and allows the youth to lead out.

"We have personally chaperoned several trips to Disneyland with Sound Investment, Hughson High School's advanced choir, and observed this student leadership in action. Disneyland cast members who coordinate the workshops work directly with Sound Investment's presidency to convey vital information, which they, in turn, communicate to the choir members. At evening curfew, room captains report to the presidency members via text when all choir members are present, and the presidency sends a text to Mr. Thompson. One year, the choir members were to have their luggage on the bus by a certain time. Half an hour before the deadline, we came down to see how things were progressing. The choir president seemed puzzled by our inquiry when he responded that all the luggage was already on the bus," said the Andersons. "Truly, Mr. Thompson has done an excellent job teaching students how to be leaders of each other and themselves."

Stephen Covey defined interdependence as the highest level of maturity and the ability to work with others to achieve success. He believed that interdependent people understand that their success is connected to the success of others. This truth manifests in the performing arts, and Mr. Thompson explicitly teaches the importance of striving to become interdependent. He teaches that one must first become independent, taking care of one's own business on the way to interdependence and finding ways to help the group succeed. He often ends rehearsals by asking cast members to point out ways they saw fellow cast members demonstrate interdependence. Mr. Thompson teaches his student directors and choreographers that when a performer makes a positive change, they should "praise the heck out of it." When working with a group, they praise the ones doing it correctly rather than criticize those falling short. His high expectations and beliefs inspire students to always strive to improve.

Given the examples above, it should come as no surprise that Mr. Thompson's program cultivates excellence in students both as performers and as people.  Mr. Thompson has created a tradition of excellence. He developed a proprietary music theory program under the title "Excellence in Music" used nationwide. The program is best described on his website, musicwondermusic.com:

"Excellence in Music is a seven-volume work. Each volume contains a workbook and 24 recorded lessons. The recorded lessons can be accessed online for free. Students who complete all seven volumes will have a seven-volume reference with over 600 pages. This course covers lessons in music history, practice tips, technique, sight singing, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation, modes, how to perform and deal with performance anxiety, composition, harmony, counterpoint, the lives and works of the great composers, musical style, musical form, analysis and more! All of this is in a sequential and easy-to-use format."

A few students have even completed the program by the eighth grade and passed the AP (Advanced Placement) exam in music.

Mr. Thompson created a non-competitive choral festival called Water Music. Every year, four or five school choirs spend three days at Great Wolf Lodge attending workshops, singing together, and developing friendships. Back at Hughson High School, Mr. Thompson helped create a school-wide event called Night of the Arts in concert with his colleagues. Night of the Arts showcases students' talents across various media, including singing, painting, photography, instrumental music, and more. With Water Music, Night of the Arts, and his classroom curriculum, Mr. Thompson's willingness to collaborate with individuals who have skill sets that may exceed his own in specific areas (i.e., opera singers, set designers, lighting designers, and acting coaches, etc.) demonstrates his humility, interdependence, and drive for excellence.

His drama program has benefited from individuals who have worked professionally as set designers, scenic painters, and lighting designers. His choirs have learned from professional vocal coaches, opera singers, choreographers, and other directors. He draws these people to him with his love for the students, his appreciation for their help at whatever level they are willing to help, and his ability to let them create without micromanaging them.

Even with all of the professional-level education he provides, Mr. Thompson never focuses on having a professional-level performance. It is always about the students. Often, the lead roles go to students who are ready to grow, not the ones who are the most talented. Students are taught that if they don't have time to finish their costume change, "to just get out on stage because their voices are needed." Then, he helps them figure out how to get the costume change done on time or alter it. Students with speech impediments have had lead roles. Students with congenital disabilities affecting their larynx have had solos. Shy students are invited to be choreographers, and outgoing students are invited to mentor rather than be the star. In his plays, those in the "chorus" are called Magnificent Magnifiers. Mr. Thompson emphasizes in every rehearsal that everyone's role in telling the story is essential.

"Generations of students and parents will forever be positively affected by who Mr. Thompson is and how he teaches. Mr. Thompson is not only a LifeChanger of the Year, but a LifeChanger of a lifetime," said the Andersons.

Here is a man that has such an effective way of teaching youth leadership through love and example. His calm demeanor and Christ like love is one that demands respect, and he knows just how to use it. Brad Thompson helped me to develop my talents and grow as a young man into someone more calm and caring. I am and will forever be grateful for his example and role as a male figure in my life.

If anyone deserves recognition as a Life Changer, it is my husband, Brad Thompson. Brad spends virtually every waking moment serving and building other people. His reach stretches far and wide. He has taught thousands of K-12 students. First, he creates a safe place for them to be themselves, where no one will criticize them and they are taught to look for the best in their fellow students. In 46 years of marriage, I have never heard him say unkind words to anyone. Really. After establishing a safe haven for his students, Brad teaches skills to them. He encourages his students to stretch a bit beyond their comfort zones, while giving them the support they need to be successful. I never get tired of seeing individual students on stage visibly grow in confidence right before my eyes. In 1982, Brad moved to Heber City, Utah, a small town in lovely mountain valley. There was a paucity of musicians there, and almost no adult male musicians. Encouraged by their coaches, football players ridiculed any boy who sang in choir. During the next ten years, the choir and drama classes mushroomed. The children’s chorus he directed went from 35 members to almost 300. His groups regularly won highest honors in Statewide competitions and were invited to perform with the Utah Symphony. Brad organized the Wasatch Community Chorus, which performed Oratorios such as Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” and Handel’s “Messiah,” Benjamin Britton’s “Ceremony of Carols” and Brahms’ German Requiem, with visiting artists including the BYU symphony orchestra. During his time in Heber City, Brad founded the Wasatch Piano Clinic and Competition. Piano students from throughout the State of Utah participated. Guest Artists included professional musicians from around the country. This Piano Clinic motivated piano students to work for higher levels of excellence. As a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brad had the opportunity to travel and perform, work and record with masterful guest artists. He incorporated various professional techniques, that he observed and learned from singing in the Choir, into his own school and community choirs. His hundreds, if not thousands of piano students have been influenced to become disciplined, successful citizens. A few have gone on to teach music at a college level, and many have piano students of their own. Thousands of piano teachers have made Brad’s Music Wonderful Music a core part of their curriculum. By following the Magic of Inner Hearing training, students develop a full musical education, including music theory, ear training, music history, composing, and transposing. It’s impossible to know how many lives have been affected by using this resource. The year he left Utah in 1990, Brad received the Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year in Arts Education Award, from the Utah Alliance for Arts Education. Perhaps more meaningful was being asked by the high school football coaches to take a coaching position. “If you can get that kid to do that on a stage, you can convince our players to do anything! When we moved from Utah, three teachers were hired to replace Brad. His work there has continued to be a lasting influence in the community. In California, Brad continued teaching dozens of piano students, and K-12 school students. Along with the regular holiday and Spring concerts, Brad directed about 8 musicals per year. Again, his classes and choirs grew and multiplied, causing him to meet before school to accommodate them all. He teaches his students to be leaders, to direct, to participate. Brad is a fully committed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For years he volunteered to lead huge groups of teenagers at church, each year singing oratorios that buoyed their faith and commitment to God, and uplifted their audiences. In addition, he usually has directed or accompanied for local church choirs as a volunteer. He has held several leadership positions in the church. For six years, Brad was on the directing team for the Nauvoo Pageant, produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo, Illinois. He spent the school year flying to Salt Lake City to audition actors, and meet in committees. In the summers, we traveled to Illinois, where he directed 20 core actors and approximately 900 extras who performed 5 evenings per week. On Sundays, he took the core cast to perform for local charities. Brad is committed to the Boy Scouts of America. He has every one of the traits listed in the Scout law. (Trustworthy, loyal, helpful courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, clean, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.) His students know that he will not produce shows that have anything sordid in them. a For his service to the BSA, Brad was awarded the Silver Beaver award. In addition to all of this, Brad was a dedicated father to our five children. He taught each of them to play the piano, something that they are doing with their children. It was a highlight of his career to have his own children in his classes at school. Although he has influenced thousands, Brad concentrates on the individual. He tailors curriculum for the neediest of students to the most accomplished, one by one. From choreographing a “dance” for a wheelchair bound girl who loved to do wheelies, to providing opportunities to the more advanced, Brad reaches out to each one.

Mr. Thompson constantly looks for ways to be a better teacher from year to year. He spends all summer making intensive lesson plans so when the school year starts he can be flexible and focus on the students. He cares about building character and life lessons that will last far beyond graduation. Thank you, Mr. Thompson for all your hard work.

I have worked with Brad Thompson 16 years. I started as parent when my daughter joined honor choir. He teaches his student more than just how to act in a play. They learned responsibility so every student saw any problem backstage they would take care of the problem. The older students would help the younger students He had two age groups he taught. K-8 and high school. His teachers methods was fun and hands on. All the K-8. Looked forward to his classes He also formed an honor choir 3-8 grade. He had them working so hard that they would compete in against high school choirs in a music competition. Honor Choir would finish in the top 5 against all the high school choirs. My daughter learned so much about lighting, sound and stage she is making a career. Brad was an awesome teacher that went far above the normal education requirements for each grade

Mr. Thompson directed a community production that I was a part of and I will never forget his positive leadership and influence. He was professional and had a gift for bringing out the best of those involved. He cared about each person and inspired all of us involved to achieve greatness and to help each other. What an amazing leader, teacher and director! Congrats on your retirement!

Brad, You are a top tier guy in my book! You didn’t just give instruction on the arts, but life itself. Always keep performing, never stop smiling despite mistakes, the audience won’t know the difference. The many performances you let me join in as a youth and as an adult are some of my most treasured memories. Hope we get to serve again together in the future.

A good teacher leaves traced on those they come into contact with. They inspire everyone around them with their wisdom and experience. Mr Thompson has inspired hundreds not only with a powerful foundational understanding it music but also in important qualities to live with in life. He taught the importance in interdependence and by extension, the virtue of humility and the power that a group has togeather. He inspired not just in his words but in his life. He lives by example, showing everyone the content news that comes from a life of humility and dedication to one's craft. I still study the piano under him 10 years later, hoping after each week that I can gleam more of his wisdom, remember more of his lessons, and apply them in my every day life. I have my own students now, teaching the piano and voice, and I can only hope to impart what Mr Thompson taught me. Mr Thompson created a legacy of excellence in music through careful dedication, interdependence, and a deep care for those around you.

Mr. Thompson was the best teacher I've ever had. He was always so supportive and helped his students in any way. Always has a smile on his face. One year I wasnt able to raise all the funds for the choir trip to Disney and by my surprise he paid for the rest so I was able to go. He showed me how amazing teachers can be and how they can inspire people.

Our family has been blessed both directly and indirectly by the consecration of your time and talents to the Lord. We are so grateful to serve and work alongside you, learning from your example and way of being. You are aware of needs and work effectively in your sphere of influence. If you were not so compassionate and warm, it might be a very intimidating thing to interact with you—knowing your skills and experience! In the contrary, you are wonderfully open with sharing your gifts and wisdom in a gifted-ly humble way. We love you so much and look forward to learning from and with you for years to come.

Mr. Thompson has been one of the most influential people in my life to this day. I was a member of the Hickman choirs from the time I was in kindergarten all the way through eighth grade. He taught me everything I know about music and was the one to first inspire my love for it. Mr. Thompson's unending dedication towards not only teaching music but also building character was formative for me in ways I didn't fully realize until afterwards. He emphasized interdependence, and taught us to be team players. He inspired confidence in his students, which empowered them to extend that encouragement to others. I entered Hickman Honor Choir shy and shrinking, and left with confidence and the knowledge that I was capable of accomplishing difficult things. Even when I didn't believe in myself, Mr. Thompson believed in me.

Mr. Thompson was my choir teacher from kindergarten through my freshman year of high school. He’s had a huge impact on my life and I learned so much about music, music theory, and singing. But I also learned important life lessons and values like how to be interdependent, how to be a leader, how to have a positive attitude, how to perform under pressure, how to step out of my comfort zone, and the importance of teamwork. I’ll carry those lessons and all the wonderful memories I made under his teaching for the rest of my life!

Mr. Thompson- a man of integrity, compassion, and a love for helping people reach their greatest potential. These virtues are something I have experienced personally as a student of his for the last 15 years. It started in my 1st grade year when my sister and I started attending Hickman Charter School and joined the choir program Mr. Thompson directs at that school. This is when a lifelong interest in music sparked, and a wonderful teacher-student relationship developed between he and I that continues to this day. From a young age, Mr. Thompson has taught me and other students not only how to tell the story of a piece of music or play through song and dance, but he also enhanced our leadership skills of interdependence, empathy, preparedness, and perseverance. Now, as a college student and semi-professional musician, I am so grateful to have been able to use these techniques in every aspect of my life- academically, professionally, socially, and spiritually. Thank you Mr. Thompson for all you have taught me, and for the cherished memories we have made across the years!

Mr. Thompson was one of the most influential teachers I had at Hughson High School, and even 9 years later, I still look back fondly on the experiences, classes, and performances I was fortunate to participant in under his guidance. Throughout all four years of high school, I had the privilege of learning from and working alongside him — whether it was in choir or drama classes, joining early morning choir practice with Advanced Women’s Choir, taking on leadership roles in both choir and drama, or serving as his Instructional Aide during my junior year. Mr. Thompson poured his heart and soul into every class, every rehearsal, and every event. He’s truly a one-of-a-kind teacher, and it was clear that teaching choir and drama at HHS wasn’t just a job to him — it was a passion. He consistently went above and beyond, dedicating time and energy even way before and after school hours. He taught us so much more than just singing and acting. He helped us grow as individuals — encouraging interdependence, leadership, and collaboration. He was kind, patient, enthusiastic, and always had a sparkle in his eye. During my junior and senior years, as I stepped into leadership roles, he became not only a mentor but also like a fun teammate or colleague — especially when preparing for the choir trips to Disneyland. Thank you, Mr. Thompson, for sharing your talents, your love of music and theater, and your unwavering support to the students of HHS for so many years. Your presence at the high school will be truly missed!

Brad Thompson has inspired my children to become what they are today. He mentored them for piano lessons at his and our home. He kept them accountable and was very dependable. My children to this day recall his influence in their lives. One has finished undergraduate college and is now in post graduate professional school. I believe Brad’s influence in their lives was a boost to their success and I personally thank him for it. Congratulations Mr. Thompson!

I loved reading the Anderson's nomination. Brad's leadership is extraordinary in large part because he lives what he's teaching. He cares about each person, and that allows him to help each person grow in ways they need. I've watched him lead in challenging circumstances, connecting people with diverse viewpoints and objectives to help everyone pull the same direction. He is indeed a LifeChanger not just for the year, but for generations who are and will feel the benefits of growth experienced by working with him.

Mr. Thompson was one of the best teachers I've ever had. I was in his choir from 2nd grade - 7th grade and in each year, I learned something new. In 2nd - 3rd grade, he taught me how to draw the bass clef and treble clef through the symbols of rainbows and mountains. In 4th-5th grade, I learned how to sing in parts with the choir, compose my own music, and to transpose the music that I heard into notes. When I joined Honor Choir in 6th grade, I was learning 10-20 lines each play, the choreography to 5 different songs, and was continuing to grow and expand my knowledge on music theory. Throughout those plays, Mr. Thompson was so encouraging and supportive, encouraging me to be the best actor that I could be and to always be in character. He would always give me tips on how to improve whatever I was doing, but he made sure to compliment me and tell me "good job" whenever he noticed that I was in character or when I delivered a line really well. I always felt like he was proud of me and I knew that he always supported me. Throughout all those years that I had with Mr. Thompson, from 2nd grade - 7th grade, he taught me one of the most important lessons in life: to be interdependent and to help my mom. I know that I speak for everyone when I say: "Thank you Mr. Thompson for all the effort and time you poured out on us from the very first day we joined your choir to our very last!"

My association with Brad Thompson is on a community and church basis. We have served together for over 35 years and he has consistently shown the characteristics and attributes of a master teacher. His love of the youth and individuals who are more reserved has helped him to do miracles in my opinion. He is amazing

I had the joy of being one of Mr. Thompson’s students for 8 years! When I reflect on my time in his classes, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for his love and care for me and for each of his students. I never felt like just another kid to him. He truly cared for every one of his students and gave each one the opportunity to succeed. He encouraged us to take responsibility for ourselves from a young age, knowing that kids are capable of so much more than people normally give them credit for. Out of all of the teachers I had throughout my education, Mr. Thompson was unique in that he didn’t just care about us learning the material he was hired to teach. He cared just as much, if not more, about creating capable and confident young people who would become capable and confident adults. He chose to be invested in us just as much as he was invested in our musical abilities. I can genuinely say that I would not be where I am today without the investment of Mr. Thompson in my life. Thank you Mr. Thompson for the family you created and for the love and talent you shared with all of us!

My three children were a part of Mr. Thompson's K- 8 choir program, beginning in 2010. While they learned wonderful songs, how to count, and gained an immense amount of knowledge in music theory, it was character development that I am truly grateful to Mr. Thompson for. Becoming interdependent was a trait Mr. Thompson valued and prioritized. Beginning in the Kindergarten choir, he began modeling and teaching my kids about being kind, serving others, and how to be a helper at home, too. As part of the Third through Eighth grade choir, the kids continued to learn how to respect others and were provided an opportunity by Mr. Thompson to sing for residents at an area rest home. In about the third grade, my kids began his music theory program titled Excellence in Music. Being a homeschool parent, my kids progressed through the CD- formatted lessons and he taught so much about valuable character traits through stories related to the theory content. Around the fourth grade, they began the Honor Choir, which also involves participation in two musicals per year. Becoming a part of this group required an audition in front of the rest of the choir, which took much bravery. Mr. Thompson taught the kids how to be good audience members: to listen and not talk, be respectful and kind, and applaud after each audition. As a parent, I watched each audition my kids experienced, and I was so impressed at how well-mannered the students were and how encouraging they were to each other. Often times, after rehearsals, Mr. Thompson would have the kids sit down and would give them an opportunity to point out something positive a fellow member did, or a quality a fellow member exemplified. It was lessons like this that Mr. Thompson practiced, all the while continually showing patience and kindness with his students. I am so grateful to have his influence on my kids at an early age, and I can see the benefits to this day in my high-school and college-aged kids.

Brad has been a friend since high school days. He always has been a forward thinking individual. He never was the kind to just do what he was assigned, or asked to do, he was thinking beyond the mark, push the limits, do more than what was expected. We can all do better than what we are asked to do. He taught me so many things to the point of me quoting what Brad would say in any situation. I don’t believe I idolized him, I just knew I could learn a thing, or many things if I just took the chance to step out of my comfort zone. It is true when you sit on your”laurels” nothing will change. We all need to learn from others, I was just one of the lucky ones to happen upon Brad Thompson, and to rediscover the magic in his wisdom. There is one hitch in knowing this unique gentleman, he is a hard individual to compliment or give recognition to. He accepts it gratefully but does not want to be the center of attention. One classic human being, that is for certain.

Mr. Thompson has been a huge blessing to our family and to everyone he has touched through his influence in the Hughson and Hickman communities and beyond. I love how he was able to inspire the quiet and shy students to be brave and to want to stand on the stage and to perform. He taught the students leadership skills, to be interdependent, and to strive to do a five dollar job. Through watching him teach and guide the students with kindness and gentleness, I would tell my friends that Mr. Thompson made me endeavor to be a better parent. He was such a good example to me! Mr. Thompson is an amazing and effective teacher and has touched the lives of generations of parents and students. My children and I are better people, for having known Mr. Thompson.

Our family was honored to participate in Bradley Thompson's choir program through Hickman Charter School, grades K-8. Mr. Thompson is one of the most inspirational teachers I have ever encountered. He inspires his students to reach to their fullest potential, both musically and overall. Mr. Thompson has a unique ability to work sucessfully with all ages of students, from kindergarteners to high school seniors. He even welcomed siblings younger than kindergarten to sit with their older sisters and brothers to absorb musical instruction from the youngest age. He teaches using a process-oriented method that develops the whole child. Our children participated in choir and musical theater, and also studied music theory with the curriculum he wrote. This program developed such a strong foundation that the knowledge transferred seamlessly to instrumental music as well. But most of all, Mr. Thompson's ability to inspire personal responsibility and independence gave our children invaluable foundational values for life. We are so blessed to have had Mr. Thompson as a part of our children's education.

LifeChanger of the Year Nominee: Mr. Brad Thompson. I have had the pleasure of attending the band, choir and drama back in the early 2000's when we had a daughter in the band. Through the years we always loved the programs put together by Mr. Thompson and Ella Webb. Currently with a Granddaughter in Mr. Thompson's choir and drama we have thoroughly enjoyed all of his efforts working with the students and seeing them shine. His involvement with the community and county are nothing but heartwarming. The evening he took the HHS Sound Investment and Hickman Charter to perform at the Stanislaus County Office of Education Superintendent and School Board dinner meeting was an outstanding performance. Mr. Thompson's song choices were nothing short of amazing. I was also fortunate to attend a performance with my Mother In Law held at Samaritan Village in Hughson. Mr. Thompson's kind caring nature carries over to his students. While the residents loved the songs they also truly enjoyed the students coming into the crowd and engaging in conversation and meeting them. Thank You Mr. Thompson for your years of dedication to Hughson High, Hickman Charter, the community and for helping our students shine.

Life Changer is perhaps the most apt title for Brad Thompson. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t live by the lessons learned on his stage more than 15 years ago. He fostered a creativity that thrives in my work, a kindness that lives in my soul, and a love of this world that cannot be dimmed. Mr. Thompson has never been just a choir/theater teacher. He has always been a light. Sometimes like a campfire on a dark night, a reminder that there is always warmth, always good, somewhere out there. Sometimes like a bonfire, joyful and bright and there to share the excitement of music and the stage. I’m almost 30 now, and haven’t stood on that little stage in over a decade, but that is a place that lives in my heart. To me, that little theater is, and always will be, home. Mr. Thompson made it that way. For me, for all, a place in this world.

Mr. Thompson is one of the most inspirational, selfless, and humble people that I know. I am a sophomore in high school and had the opportunity to learn from him for two years through his classes that he teaches at the high school, Sound Investment and Drama. In these classes, not only did I immensely improve my musical and theatrical capabilities, but I also learned, through him, what interdependence truly is and what it means to forge unity using the different talents and gifts of people working together toward a common goal. Mr. Thompson does not only teach with his words, but also with his heart. He cares about each and every one of his students and shows compassion and understanding through everything that he does. Mr. Thompson never doubts or discourages us, but instead has faith in us and knows that we can accomplish far more than we think we can. For his students, he gives each of them the opportunity to grow and develop skills through delivering speaking parts, singing solos, or having a part in a play. We learn so much by taking advantage of these opportunities, and we would not learn nearly as much if they were not given to us. Mr. Thompson has forever changed the lives of not only myself, but thousands of his students who have been a part of his curriculum. There is not another person who is more deserving of this award. Thank you Mr. Thompson!

Mr. Thompson is an amazing man. He is patient and attentive, kind and loving, and all the kids (and their parents!) can feel it. I've been privileged to have my three kids in his regular choir classes through the charter school, and to see him welcome the younger siblings to join in with what the older ones are doing. I've seen him teach kindergartners how to clap the beats of quarter notes and rests, all while having fun listening and moving to music. I've seen him teach first and second graders their "do, re, mi's" and how to hear written music in their heads. I've seen him teach third through eighth graders to read music and compose their own pieces, sing in parts, and learn about interdependence. And he does it all with a gentle patience and grace that make it enjoyable for everyone involved. He holds their attention without yelling or reprimanding. He gives shy kids speaking parts at concerts and they rise to the challenge. He involves parents, selecting a class mother or father in each class, whose job is to make the other parents feel welcome. He also has parents help with correcting the music theory homework so that he can focus on the kids. This shows great powers of delegation and also the interdependence that he talks about in his lesson recordings, helping parents feel like an important part of the choir as well. When he retires, he will have a successor, but he himself is irreplaceable. He is leaving enormous shoes to fill and we will all miss him very much!

Mr. Thompson was the reason why my kids learned music theory and how to read music. I homeschool my children through the charter school that Mr. Thompson is affiliated with. When my oldest daughter joined choir class, my son wanted to do what she was doing. He was only about 3 years old. Mr. Thompson said let him! He was a part of all the practices and the performance that year, and he paid attention! I had no hope of using extra family funds to pay for music lessons for my kids. And yet, because of Mr. Thompson, my daughter plays flute and my son loves music. Thank you Mr. Thompson!

Brother Thompson has changed my life and the life of so many of my family members he taught us principals of charity and interdependence. He has given us so many opportunities to grow. He has more faith in us than we do. He sees us as angels when in reality we are a collection of people who are trying. Thats all he needs. So thank you Mr Thompson for being a guiding light in my life.

Around March 2020 the world, as we knew it, came to a sudden stop. Every form of socially based enjoyment halted, not the least of which was graduation and the Disneyland trip. The following school year was restricted and shackled by mandates that were well intentioned but crippling to any student accustomed to an enriched school year full of interaction and engagement. What does a choir director and drama teacher do with that? Many people simply could not work within the confines of the restrictions. However, for Mr. Thompson giving up was never an option. He responsibly investigated the limits of the restrictions and formulated a plan. The first show was Davy Crockett, with its overarching theme, “do the best you can with what you got”. Students performed their roles in their homes in front of cameras, often in the form of smartphones, and the Mendiolas did the amazing splicing and editing together. The finished product was a testimony to what can be accomplished with vision, zeal, and persistence. For the next show he pushed the envelope and, again following all mandated restrictions, brought the Hickman kids together (albeit 6 feet apart and masked) at the Hughson Arboretum to film The Jungle Book. It was amazing to see non-virtual faces. Once again through the magic of pixie dust, and hours of Mendiola family editing, the finished product was a great success. As the restrictions lightened Mr. Thompson took advantage of the changes. The following fall, both Hughson High and Hickman Honor Choir performed Moana on-stage but in masks. It was wonderful to regain the thrill of live theatre where all the moving parts need to be in sync. By the next show it was decided that the performers should be able to show their faces, so the audience wore masks. Finally, the unmuffled voices and facial expressions made the performance complete again. As things gradually normalized, we could look back and see how blessed we were to have made it through an anxiety ridden time while still being able to experience some of the life-enriching activities that our kids had been so invested in. Many people would have invited the opportunity to do less; to enjoy the mandated stay-away policies and rest. In fact, to avoid challenging the authorities that might scrutinize and criticize his efforts at a time when the question of masks, gatherings, and proximity were actively heated debates. He could have taken the easy road and everyone would have understood and some would have even applauded. But Mr. Thompson knew our kids, in some facets perhaps better than us. He knew how much these opportunities meant to them. He had taught them, directed them, and helped them grow in skill, character, and maturity, and he wasn’t about to give up on them. If he were given an inch to work with, he would use it, stretch it and, with an illusionist's skill, make it feel like a mile. There is a quote by Martin Luther King Jr. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” We are so blessed and grateful that Mr. Thompson has and will forever stand for our kids.

Mr Thompson is my current choir and drama teacher, and I’m disappointed this is the only year I will have with him. He has been a amazing teacher and has taught me many skills and lessons I will use in life.

Over ten years ago, Mr. Brad Thompson was my choir and drama teacher at HHS. He always had a smile on his face as you entered his classroom and he empowered each and every student. The opportunities I was given under his leadership and direction is something I have not taken for granted. Now as a mother, I see my own daughter have a love for the arts and I can only hope that one day she will have a teacher that’s even half as incredible as Mr. Thompson! Such a deserving nominee and light in the world!

I remember first seeing one of Mr. Thompson’s theatre productions almost 30 years ago when my sister was in high school. He was a new teacher at Hughson High, although not new to the world of theatre and music. The enthusiasm and love he put into that production was evident through his students and I was impressed by this “new” drama teacher. 10 years later, I started attending the Hughson High School performances between three to four times a year as a teacher at our local elementary school. Every performance, whether it is the choir or drama class performing, is fantastic. My students delight in the talent, humor, and love that shines through Mr. Thompson’s students. For many of my students, this is the only exposure to performing arts they have ever had and it is one of the highlights of their years in elementary school. Each time we attend Mr. Thompson greets us with joy. His love of teaching is evident through everything he touches. When I describe Mr. Thompson to others I say that he is one of those magical teachers, who has changed so many lives, from his students to the students watching the performances, that the ripple effect will be felt for decades. We have been very blessed to have such a wonderful teacher and person in our community.

Mr. Thompson truly created the experience of a lifetime for so many people. I was in his choir and drama programs for 8 years, and I looked forward to every class and rehearsal. He is so amazing at rounding out the corners of each and every child and gives each one the experience experience that they personally need the most. I remember the way he would let younger siblings as young as 2 participate in choir with older sisters and brothers. He is an incredibly inclusive and thoughtful person that is has always inspired me and thousands of other people. Mr. Thompson infuenced me and so many others in so much more than just singing and drama. He has a positive inpact on a person's whole life, teaching interdependence and humility. He always told us, "There are no main characters. Magnificent Magnifiers are just as important as the name characters; we need each and every one of you." He is selfless and loving to everybody that has the pleasure to work with him. With gratitude, Shoshana Alkhas

I am a senior in high school who has had the good-fortune to be the student of the same dedicated teacher for 13 years. Since kindergarten I have had choir with my teacher, Mr. Thompson. He has had the opportunity to watch me grow up and I have been blessed with his kindness and wisdom. From him, I have learned what it means to be interdependent within a larger group. How a leader is not only supposed to instruct, but to guide those who need help and have patience with those who are easily distracted. If I ever felt confused or downhearted, he would know, and raise me back up again. Without Mr. Thompson, I would not be going to my current school, nor would I have been ready for the responsibility of the role of Co-president of the Sound Investment. He has guided me through my choir so far, and under his leadership, I have taken part in many performances with friends at my side. Everyone in our choir is given equal opportunities to lead and take part in the decisions that take place. This includes how many performances we do, where and when they take place. We have performed to our community multiple times every year. We have been allowed to perform at Disneyland every year, going backstage and learning from professionals how to act, sing, record, and perform. By taking part in this, I have been able to be a piece of the wonder and magic that makes Disneyland so inviting. Making this experience a reality requires planning, fundraising, additional practice, and his open guidance allows us to take ownership of these components. The fact that we are given that opportunity at all shows his faith in us. He knows how invested we all are in creating the best show possible. We put together choreography, vocals, solos, dances; all so that we can share it with others and use their approval as the reward for our efforts. Now, with my senior year, Mr. Thompson is retiring, but his works will live on, as will his teachings. After touching hundreds of hearts, including my own, he is finally able to relax and enjoy the show.

Mr. Thompson is a MASTER teacher who represents patience personified! My triplets were fortunate enough to be his students K thru 11th Grade. Yes, he taught them music; yes, he directed the multiple choirs in which they sang; yes, my children participated in school musicals and performed in seasonal concerts; yes, they learned to perform in the community—visiting senior centers, and nursing homes throughout the years (and not just for holidays). YES! His classes were always their favorites! Yet, Mr. Thompson taught SO MUCH MORE…. Think life-skills, learning to work “interdependently,” being dependable and considerate, and approaching challenges with positivity. Mr. Thompson lays the groundwork for plenty of volunteer opportunities; as well as plenty of opportunities for teamwork and team building. He both formally and informally facilitates his students, and their parents, in building successful and supportive relationships—some of these extending well-past school years! Mr. Thompson is the teacher of a lifetime—for countless students and their parents. He helps all of his students excel and invites each of them to look outside of themselves and give their best. He empowers his students by affording them leadership opportunities. Unlike many directors involved in the performing arts, he has carefully managed to not make performances about himself. He has a quiet confidence and most definitely “walks his talk!” In the 14 years my children learned, rehearsed, and performed with him, I only saw him get frustrated once. (I do not believe his students even realized it, because he quickly checked himself.) He, also, only admitted out loud, once, to being anxious. Mr. Thompson shows such self-mastery in his calm demeanor, his gentle patience, his positive outlook and his exemplary attitude! He is most definitely in control amidst the organized chaos. On the rare occasions he is put in a position of having to intervene when unacceptable situations arise—be they students not following rules and standards, or their parents being less than good examples—Mr. Thompson is able to quickly and carefully resolve these issues. He lays careful, coordinated groundwork and expectations at the beginning of each school year. He requires and receives 100% buy-in to his rules and expectations from students AND their parents. Should disagreements arise, he is able to defuse strong emotions by referring to the standards and rules that have previously been agreed upon by everyone. These are fair, reasonable, common sense… tools that help resolve conflict and assist individuals, and the group as a whole, to return to the balanced “interdependence” that has become the hallmark of Mr. Thompson’s raison d’être! Our family is better as a whole, and as individuals, for having been blessed to grow up in such fertile individual and class experiences as Mr. Thompson provides. He exemplifies and reinforces everything that is admirable and noble about teaching! Bravo, Mr. Thompson!!! The ripples of GOOD that have radiated out from from this master teacher have truly made our world a better place!!!

Mr. Thompson is an exceptional person, making him the best teacher a student could ask for. He is attentive, kind, and positive. He remembers details about each student and family making them feel important and special. Mr. Thompson speaks with such thoughtfulness and care that students no matter how shy feel encouraged to participate, do their best, and gain confidence. He makes his students feel so happy to be there that the class is easily "the highlight of their day". Mr. Thompson's demeanor and skill is hard to put into words, but makes him a teacher that is more than deserving of this recognition.

Mr. Thompson was my daughter's kindergarten choir teacher. She loves to sing and dance but is very shy. Under his care and instruction her confidence soared! She would sing so loudly and you can see her excitement and pride in who she is becoming. She is going to continue with choir, and I have Mr. Thompson to thank for that.

It was our first year with Mr. Thompson, and I was amazed at how much both my children learned about music from his programs! His talent and dedication to others is so apparent. I’m grateful that we were able to meet Mr. Thompson and learn from him even for a short time. His impact will continue on in the all the lives he touched over the many years he dedicated to multiple school communities!

Mr. Thompson taught my daughter through grade school. I would sit in for some of the practice sessions before a performance and was amazed at how he could keep the students’ attention throughout the hours long practice. Then he would sit all the kids down on stage for a quick talk about the difference between dependance, independence, and interdependence. After a 10 minute break they were back to rehearsal for another hour or two. And the kids loved their time there. When the time came for the performance he would just sit back and observe as the students were so well prepared they needed very little instruction for what they needed to be doing. He was a truly great role model in my daughter’s educational growth.

Mr. Thompson has worked so hard for all his students, including myself and I am so grateful to have him as a teacher this year! He is so kind and really devoted in drama and choir. I am sad I was only able to be a student of his for one year, but he has changed me as a person so much, and I cannot think of any other teacher who deserves it more than him!

I have several children who have participated in Mr. Thompson's choir and drama programs. While some of my children naturally gravitate to these activities, two of my children do not. One child refused to sing or be sung to all of his growing up years. Now he is singing in the choir and on the stage! Only Mr. Thompson could have done that. Another child has terrible anxiety brought on by trauma. I never thought I would see her speak in front of others, let alone sing and now she looks forward to being chosen for her part in the play. Only Mr. Thompson could have done that. Brad Thompson is a remarkable individual who is changing lives for the better.

I am a former Hickman Charter Student who partook in Mr. Thompson’s Honer Choir. He had a huge impact on me. The teaching and musical instruction was amazing as to be expected. What really touched me though was the family aspect he brought to our choir, he made sure to include everyone and had immense patience. He helped me gain confidence in my abilities and saw traits in my performing ability I didn’t see before. Long after I’ve been gone I still think about my time in his classes, the lessons learned and me memories made. I can think of no better recipient of this award!

I don’t know if I have ever seen someone have such a profound impact on an entire community than Mr Thompson has had on this one. I have lived in many cities in California. After our community burned down in Paradise almost 7 years ago we moved here to Hughson where my husband took the principal job at the high school. One thing I noticed right away is what a gem this little community is. At the time of our move it was apparent that compared to surrounding areas the schools and the people here were healthier and more successful. I heard many people rave specifically about Hickman elementary and Hughson High and how because of those two schools and the low crime in Hughson, people flock here and the homes are more valuable than surrounding areas. I then soon learned that one of the reasons Hickman charter is such a good school is because of the unique and amazing honor choir program. Then I learned that one of the best things about the high school at the time was it’s unique and amazing drama and choir programs. Finally I learned that the same man was responsible for these programs at both schools. My husband who is the principal at the high school has nothing but the upmost respect and admiration for Mr. Thompson and had often remarked on how incredible his people skills and organization skills are and what an amazing talent he has for bringing out the best in people. Everyone he knows he touches their lives for good. He has brought out the musical talents and confidence in the 3 of my boys who have attended the high school. He even brought out the best in my son who didn’t sign up for any music classes but because of Mr. Thompsons amazing skills of bringing out the best in others, he somehow got this son of mine to sing a solo part at a ladies funeral who attended our church. All three if these sons of mine have nothing but great things to say about Mr. Thompson. He is possibly the most hard working and cheerful person I have ever met, And his talents are unparalleled.

I was lucky enough to have Brad Thompson as a teacher. He is such a wonderful human and very down to Earth. He is very sincere when he talks to you and only has good things to say. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him say I mean thing about anyone ever. He is very smart in the music world, and has used his knowledge to bless, others lives. He is the type of person to go above, and beyond to help you. My sophomore year of high school, I wanted to learn to play the piano, so he took the time out of his lunch. To have a piano lesson with me. This is just a simple experience that proves how kind he was, and how willing to put others before himself. I am so grateful for the opportunity that I had to learn from him. Brad helped me see my potential in the Music community, and I will forever be grateful for all of his help and support to get me to where I am today.

Few people have been as influential on my life as Brad Thompson. He is a brilliant, masterful teacher. Even now, a decade since I graduated high school and was last his student, I often wish I could still be learning from him. The musical skill and talent that he helped me develop is something that I dearly treasure and will continue to do so for the entirety of my life. Brad is truly the best there is.

All four of my children have been greatly influenced for good by Brad Thompson. Whether it be through piano lessons, choir, or drama, my family has been blessed by knowing him for many years. He not only helped them develop their talents, he inspired them to be better versions of themselves, better friends, better citizens of their community. He is known for his positive attitude and outlook on life and just makes everyone around him feel uplifted. There were probably many times during the years where he could have let me know about something my kids did wrong, but in the more than 20 years he taught them, he only shared their strengths and qualities and joy from teaching them. He is truly remarkable and we are forever grateful to him! “It takes a village” could easily be replaced with “it just takes a Brad Thompson!!”

Dear Mr. Thompson, With your teaching and guidance, our son Bobby truly blossomed during his high school years. When 13-year-old Bobby first entered high school, we were worried about how he would adapt. Drama and choir under your direction became pivotal in his growth. Bobby has often said how much it meant to him that you believed in him. He’s shared how being part of the choir has brought real value to his life and helped him develop essential life skills. Thank you for believing in our son, for teaching him, and for always being there for him. We truly cannot thank you enough. With deepest gratitude, The Nieto Family

Brad Thompson is perhaps the finest choir director in the world. His professional attitude toward education serves as a model for anyone involved in teaching. Working with children of all ages, he has made a remarkable impact by encouraging each student to become the best musician they can be. His performances are consistently fun, punctual, and executed with a grace that makes them feel like a natural extension of children at play—yet they are rooted in some of the most sophisticated music theory I’ve ever encountered. Brad never pressures his students to perform, but instead offers them the opportunity to shine in a way that brings out their confidence and unites the entire community.

There is a saying that one can only change a life to the extent they have been changed themselves. Bradly Thompson is the embodiment of that truth—a man of unwavering character and deep integrity who has mentored hundreds, if not thousands, of students to develop the character traits that he embodies. Mr. Thompson is not just a teacher—he is a life-changer, a mentor, and a servant-leader in the truest sense. People like him are rare. They often feel like characters that only exist in movies—but he is real, and we are honored to know him! It is with heartfelt gratitude that I introduce you to one of the most extraordinary individuals I’ve ever met. A few months ago I stepped into his office during a rehearsal and amid the photos and notes on his wall, I noticed something subtle but telling: taped high above the door, across from his desk where he would see it, on simple pieces of old computer paper, are his own guiding statements... Words like “I invite students to choose excellence. How do I need to change in order to help students succeed? Charity never faileth. One-on-one caring. What is needed? Who needs help? Meek and lowly in heart.” These notes, hung long ago, are an insight to what makes Mr. Thompson a life changer. He is humble and unassuming, yet everything he builds—his choir and drama programs, his influence, his legacy—is driven by his deep well of character. Something that makes Mr. Thompson unique is that he doesn’t seek the spotlight. In fact, he would never want this award! But that’s exactly why he deserves it. He defines success not by accolades or personal recognition, but by the growth and excellence of those he mentors. He has served as the choir and drama director at Hughson High School and Hickman Charter School, shaping lives year after year with compassion, excellence, and character. My own family is among the many he has impacted. For five years, our children have been in Hickman choir, and under his leadership they have grown not just in musical ability, but in confidence, discipline, and character. When they get out of line I have even found myself asking them, "What would Mr. Thompson expect of you?" Mr. Thompson leads without coercion or gimmicks. He never raises his voice—yet when he speaks, students listen! His calm presence commands respect because it’s built on trust and consistent expectations. He even reminds students to thank their parents, be helpful at home, contribute in their community and carry themselves with humility and gratitude. Mr. Thompson is truly one in a million. His humility and devotion to mentoring students make him an ideal candidate for this award! I hope as you read the many comments and testimonies about him—you’ll begin to understand the far-reaching influence of the man we’re so proud to nominate.

I can’t think of an award Nominee more fitting because no one else in my life has changed my life as radically and completely as Mr. Thompson. I have had the pleasure of being taught and mentored by him since the sixth grade, where he generously invited my brother and I, who were new in town, to participate in a weeklong drama camp he holds for his close family every summer. I was a kid with anger issues. I didn’t want to listen to anyone because I didn’t feel like anyone wanted to listen to me. I felt as though no one valued me, so I didn’t value myself either. At that time I hated myself and I hated my life. But from that first week, Mr. Thompson listened to me. He treated me as though I had value, he made me feel seen and important. He treated me as though I were already a good, hardworking, kind, selfless, and interdependent person. I was not, but because he believed in me, I wanted to become the amazing person he acted like I already was. And I never had to look farther than him to find an example of all of those traits for me to model. For the next six years, I was his student across three separate programs. He taught me countless practical skills, such as valuing mine and other’s time, to always bring a pencil because they have erasers for mistakes, to assume the best out of people, to lead in a way that allows others to grow toward interdependence, to always put in my best effort- no matter the size or importance of the task at hand, how to be confident and to trust that I have something of value to offer people, and that the purpose is never to ‘put on a play’ but rather that is the activity we use to facilitate the real purpose: building a community. I know every nominee for this award is deserving of taking it home- they have all influenced so many people for the better. I just ask that you give Mr. Thompson a good, long look. He has dedicated his life to improving the hearts of everyone he meets. I am a completely different person now then I was then, and what happened in between was that I had one teacher who listened to me and treated me like I was already the person he knew I could become. He completely changed every aspect of my life, and I love him so much for that. In the fall of 2026, I plan to go to college to become a theater teacher. If I can help even one kid the way that he helped me and thousands others like me, then that would be the most rewarding achievement of my life.

Bradley Thompson is truly a remarkable and selfless educator who has made a lasting impact on my children and so many others. As their choir teacher, he has not only taught them to sing but has instilled in them a deep sense of belonging, confidence, and compassion. Every child who walks into his classroom is met with warmth and acceptance. He sees each student for who they are, recognizes their individual strengths, and makes them feel important and appreciated in their role, no matter how big or small. His love for teaching and for children radiates in everything he does. Mr. Thompson treats every student as if they were his own child or grandchild—caring for them, encouraging them, and helping them grow both musically and personally. He goes beyond the music curriculum to teach life lessons rooted in love, kindness, and empathy. In a world where children desperately need safe and nurturing role models, Mr. Thompson stands out as a beacon of hope and positivity. His classroom is more than just a place to learn music—it’s a place where hearts are healed, friendships are built, and every child learns that they matter. We are forever grateful for the love and time he pours into his students, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the Life Changer Award than Bradley Thompson.

Mr. Thompson teaches piano to two of my children. He is a positive influence in their lives, as well as an excellent instructor. In addition to that, my oldest he's taught my 5th grader in choir through Hickman Charter School. He's also donated his time by putting on a yearly play with rehearsals and performance happening all in one week in summer. Three of my kids have participated for two years. It's amazing the influence he's had on our family through his time commitment and kindness.

Brad Thompson has been one of the most influential figures in our family’s lives. His respect and kindness for all who encounter him has been an amazing example to my six children and to myself. He has directed and taught them for the past 20 years and he is and will always be their favorite teacher. He is the perfect candidate for this award because of the way he inspires others to fulfill their dreams, creates opportunities to discover and develop the potential that each of his students have within them, and does so in such a kind and constructive way. As a mother to six children, I have personally grown just from watching the way that he encourages and challenges his students with humor and gentleness. He has been an inspiration to us personally, and to all those he encounters.

I was one of Mr. Thompson's choir or drama student for eight or nine of my elementary and secondary school years, and I can say without hesitation or reservation that I consider myself to have been one of the luckiest kids in California's Central Valley to have been taught music, performing in front of an audience, and the importance of striving for excellence by Brad Thompson. Mr. Thompson facilitated an environment that allowed for the full expression in me of my growing love for the performing arts. Because of him and what he taught me, I gained a confidence in presenting myself before a crowd I don't know if I would have otherwise cultivated on my own. Because of Mr. Thompson, I am today not only a better singer, public speaker, and teacher...but also a better and more well-rounded person who sees the value of trying to be the kind of amazing example for the rising generation that Brad Thompson has been for me.
