Phylicia Swain was nominated by Lutfee Waalee, a member of the community.
"Ms. Swain is such a beautiful person outside and inside. Never have I met such a strong woman," said Waalee.
She is an advocate who works with students at Pittsburgh Miller in reading and math. Even though she is dealing with her own life issues, she still hasn't lost sight of being there to teach and motivate her students.
"Ms. Swain deserves some recognition for her hard work, determination, and excellence at Pittsburgh Miller Prek-5," Waalee added.
Ms. Swain goes above and beyond for her students. She not only inspires them through education, she also reaches out to assist those less fortunate with personal items that she purchases. She stays late to give extra attention to those that struggle during the day. She is dedicated to the youth and our future.
I have never met someone who has so much love for not just her students but for her craft as an educator. Thank you for being a positive role model for our babies.
Phylicia is a teacher who understands the importance of relating to students beyond academics. She understands and respects the culture of the students and relates to them in a way that only awesome teachers. Her students and families love and support her. I had an opportunity to mentor her many years ago as she was beginning her journey to become a teacher and her commitment to make learning relevant and accessible to the students was phenomenal. She showed very early on that she had what it took to do an amazing job.
I have seen Ms. Swain blossom into the amazing educator that she is today from our freshman year in college until now. I can tell by her content alone that she makes a huge impact on her students' lives and that she loved and admired by them. If anyone was made to be a teacher, it's Ms. Swain. Her ability to SEE children, meet them where they are and connect with them on a deep level is what makes her special. I believe every child deserves a teacher like her. She's the type of teacher a student would never forget. I hope she receives this award as she is more than deserving!
It was just a matter of time. What you've done and will continue to do deserves recognition. You have a unique way of connecting with your scholars allowing them to be their true authentic selves as you guide them through the most important years of thier educational careers. You possess the ability to change the trajectory of every scholar you educate. This is just the beginning and I can say, you have my support to continue to push the needle forward.
