Robert Cancellieri was nominated by Jennifer O'Sullivan, his school's speech-language pathologist.

Mr. Cancellieri is undoubtedly and unequivocally a “LifeChanger!"  In fact, he has changed many lives! Mr. C. has been a passionate and highly effective leader since he became Principal of the Joseph R. Dawe Elementary School in Stoughton, MA in July 2017.  The summer before the official start of the 2017-18 school year, he offered individual meetings with all of his staff. During this time, he met with the teachers to learn about each staff member on a personal and professional level. He also was determined to find what worked well at the Dawe School in the past, and what changes and improvements were necessary to achieve what is currently in place today. With Mr. C. as principal, the Dawe School has improved student learning and developed a more positive school culture.

One of the first initiatives Mr. C. implemented was Character Counts/Caught with Character program. This character education program has had such a positive school-wide impact.  With this program, each month is devoted to a character trait (e.g. compassion, honesty, responsibility, integrity), and classroom teachers celebrate students who demonstrate the trait of the month. This year, the newly formed Character Counts leadership team is devoting a brief monthly school-wide assembly to celebrate a Dawe School “Dragon” from each classroom who best displayed this character trait.  Mr. C. demands high standards from everyone, and students strive to be recognized!

Mr. C’s ability to interact and connect with individuals of all ages and backgrounds is incredible. On a daily basis, he deals with people of all ages, education levels and abilities.  With each person, he is respectful, professional and a true listener. Mr. C. is witty, appreciative and positive. He constantly praises his staff and is always extremely supportive. Mr. C opens each daily email with a witty meme and closes each email with “Let me know if you need anything at all!” He doesn’t just say this - he really means it! His daily email also includes a Tip/Quote/Thought of the day. On the day his nomination was submitted, the tip of the day was, “Students love being places where they feel special. So the goal is to collaboratively create a school culture where every kid feels special”.

Mr. C. is approachable and has an open door policy for both students and staff.   He has a sense of urgency and gets things done! If he does not have the answer, he is not afraid to reach out and do his best to find answers in a timely manner.  This being said, Mr. C. does not do his job from behind his desk! He calls the Dawe School community a family.

"The connections he has made with the students of this elementary school are remarkable. I believe he knows the name of all 349 children who attend the Dawe School," said O'Sullivan. "Mr. C. is often seen joining a physical education class, playing football on the playground at recess, teaching students about the rules of four square, sitting in on classroom lessons, high fiving students in the hallways, or doing magic tricks in the cafeteria. His commitment to his Dawe School Dragon family goes above and beyond the duties of a principal."

Mr. C. has built a strong school community for both students and families. He has made great connections with the parents of his Dawe Dragons and as a result, the PTO is now active and engaged. Many days after school, he is in the gym shooting hoops. He has also been known to attend student’s extracurricular activities after school and on the weekends. Mr. C’s positive nature, passion, dedication and contagious excitement have made the Dawe School a wonderful and supportive place to work and educate young minds. In turn, this has made students more likely to try their best in the classroom. Mr. C. is also a necessary disciplinarian when needed. He is sensitive and always shows nurturing respect.

In his short time at the Dawe School, Mr. C. has made improvements to school routines and has demonstrated his ability to make a beneficial difference in the lives of children.  Each morning, he greets students and parents outside with a warm welcome. His daily morning announcement on the loudspeaker may include a gentle reminder to the kids to be on their best behavior, to always do their best in the classroom, and to be proud of being a Dawe School Dragon. His announcements may also include the Patriots score, a tricky riddle, a short remark regarding witness of a character trait outside of the classroom, and/or a fun fact. With his new dismissal procedures and changes with traffic flow, the Dawe School is now a safer school.

Fridays are special spirit days!  If you visit on a Friday, you will notice staff and students wearing Dawe Dragon gear, or a sea of New England Patriots jerseys and t-shirts during football season (Mr. C. loves the Pats!). You'll also smell freshly popped popcorn provided by the PTO for snack!

If you do visit the Dawe School, notice the large screen in the foyer, which has a continuous feed of photos. Everyone enjoys the photos of happenings in and out of the classroom! Last year, Mr. C changed the “back to school night” and has now invited the students to proudly show off the Dawe School. With this change, the attendance rate has improved by over 25%.

Also, the commonwealth’s statewide standards-based assessment known as the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System or MCAS, has improved at the Dawe School. With the new MCAS being completed for the first time, the Dawe School has not only made slight gains in their achievement levels, but has shown significant improvements in the areas of participation, overall attendance and student growth. The student growth data for the school has resulted in allowing the plan for improvement to move forward to ensure the appropriate needs are the focus for the administration and staff.

Mr. C. has empowered his teachers and encourages staff to try new things.  He knows some ideas will fail, but uses failure as a positive learning experience.  With this refreshing attitude, staff is excited to be involved, which benefits the students. Recently, he invited two young authors, relatives of a staff member, to come and read their newly published children’s book on the topic of anxiety.  This was a great opportunity for the students of the Dawe School to see and hear young authors and entrepreneurs and learn about anxiety in an age appropriate way.

"Without a doubt, Mr. Cancellieri is a LifeChanger in our community," said O'Sullivan. "He is an amazing principal who is willing to go above and beyond for students, families, and staff. Mr. C.’s leadership and commitment to his staff and students have created a nurturing atmosphere conducive to learning.  His leadership over the past year has increased the overall success of the Dawe Elementary School. He is a tremendous asset to our Dawe School Dragon Family!"

In my 21 years working in our school system I never met a teacher/administrator who sincerely cares about and motivates students and staff alike. Mr C has truely been a life changer for my girls who attend the Dawe School. They love going to school and being greeted by Mr C by name. They are excited to tell me about a time when he has visited them in their classroom or did something silly to make them laugh. Even though he is a FUN principal, they still respect him and his authority as principal of their school. As a family we are all happy to have him as the principal of the Dawe School!

Rob or "Mr.C' as everyone in the Town of Stoughton knows him is a perfect candidate for the "lifechanger in our community" award. As you can read on the numerous posts here he is an awesome teacher, family man and leader not only at the Dawe School but all over Stoughton. He starts his day off smiling out in front of the school in any kind of weather greeting parents, students and teachers. He makes work FUN for all of us. He inspires each of us to be the best that we can be at all times. He has created many programs and ideas to promote social/emotional learning and promote a positive learning environment for everyone. He also thanks staff, students and parents at the end of the day daily for all that they do. He is also very active throughout the community day and night as well. When you say "Mr. C" to anyone in Town they smile and have a positive comment about knowing Rob or his wonderful family and how they have made such wonderful connections and contributions to the community over the years. Mr. Cancellieri knows every student in the school by name. He invests his time to get to know each child and knows how to get them to laugh and feel special and, honestly, be the best versions of themselves. He truly cares about each staff member and constantly reminds the staff how amazing we are as a whole school. Mr. C. has strong professional leadership qualities; he is able to unite us as a school body and promote school pride. He is knowledgeable and reliable. Mr. C. is an administrator, but he has so much empathy for classroom teachers, aides, assistants, and every other staff member, constantly thanking everyone for their time and efforts. He makes coming to work just a joy, and it's so clear that he is a positive role model for all of us. We are all extremely grateful that he chose our school to lead!

Mr. Cancellieri is the most energetic, happy, motivated, hard working and sincere principal I have ever worked for throughout my 16 years working in the Stoughton Public Schools. He is always available to students and staff; listening to their needs and works hard to meet those needs in a variety of ways. As a classroom teacher and now as a school principal, he continues to show his dedication and passion toward educating the young students in his community, and helping them rise to the best of their abilities. Mr. C is an A+ to many students, parents and teachers at the Dawe Elementary.

Mr. C. is so deserving of this honor. He definitely is the sunshine at the Dawe School. He always has a smile and a good word when he passes by. Whether it be in the hallway, in the office or the cafeteria. Why, He even filled in and served lunch when the kitchen was shorthanded one day. And he was a big hit! Not only with the kids, but with the adults too. He makes everyone feel appreciated and that their job is just as important as the next person. It's a pleasure to work at the Dawe School having Mr. C as principal. Thank you for your compassion and exceptional example of a truly wonderful human being.

Amanda Michienzie Joyce “Ms. M” Posted over a year ago

I completely agree with Mr. C. being nominated for Life Changer of the Year! He is truly so kind, caring, and funny! I originally only knew of him when he worked at the Gibbons. His energy was contagious and you could always see how much the students adored him as they would exit the (Gibbons) school at the end of the day. At the time, I only knew him in passing and I could tell he meant a lot to the students and to the parents. Almost a year later, I was fortunate enough to get placed for my student teaching at the Dawe school and I was excited to learn that the new principal was Mr. C. He made me feel welcome and part of the Dawe School family right away. Once again, I got to witness his caring nature and see all the children’s faces excited to attend school simply by walking by Mr. C. Many times throughout the school day you could find him playing basketball with a student or two, or even join in on a game of tag on the playground. Each day on the morning announcements he was sure to put his spin on things and made me chuckle and smile each day. It was such a great way for even myself to start the day. He is such an amazing leader and person and absolutely deserves this award.

Dillon Ventresca Posted over a year ago

Mr. C was the only teacher who really was there for me when I was in 5th grade. I had a lot of problems with adjusting to a substitute and he was there to always help me calm down and motivate me to do better and see the bright side of things. It was his first year teaching and he always was playing with us at recess or interacting with us during class which made all of his lessons fun and kept everyone interested. He really changed my life and deserves this more than anyone for sure

Shannon Ventresca Posted over a year ago

My sons both adored Mr. C, he is an amazing educator and definitely a life-changer!

Mr. C is the first person I see smiling in the morning and the last to say goodbye every afternoon. He is a true Champion! His presence for his staff and students is exceptional. He has made it his passion to bring kindness and compassion to the DAWE. He is welcoming and warm and has supported my path of Mindfulness for the school. Thank you, Mr. C, for your dedication each and every day.

Lisa DeLong Posted over a year ago

I couldn't agree more with this nomination! Mr. C is truly loved by ALL at the Dawe School. In just over a year, he has made such a huge positive impact at our school. He is incredibly supportive of the staff, students and families. Mr. C is always upbeat and positive. Whether he is shooting hoops with students, reading a story to students by a tent and "campfire" outside the entrance to the school, popping in classrooms to see how everyone's day is going or helping to serve lunch to students, Mr. C's passion, dedication and care for others is undeniable. I can't think of a person more deserving of this award than Mr. C.

Keniaah Latson Posted over a year ago

Mr. C is amazing with his students and they love him! It's crystal clear he loves he job and he's fostering a warm and supportive environment for staff, students and parents. He is so deserving of this award.

Congratulations to Mr.C, this award definitely describes his character and who he is as a person! My daughter was lucky enough to have him in fifth grade as her teacher, he made such a positive impact on her outlook and gave her the confidence she needed. My daughter has always been an advocate for herself and has always worked harder than anyone I have ever known, but she was missing something? Something that had held her back from reaching her full potential, Mr. C gave her that missing piece, he had so much faith and so much confidence in her she couldn't help but succeed. Mr. C, changed my daughter's life and gave her the power to believe in herself. I can't Express how much we value Mr. C and I will never forget what he did for my daughter! Thank you Mr. C for being the exception to the rules and being you!

I was able to work with Rob for two years at the Gibbons School. Teaching with Rob allowed me to see an educator's true purpose in his or her profession: showing the kids that you truly care about them, and always will. Mr. C truly cares about his work, his peers, and most of all his students, past and present. There is no one more fitting to be named LifeChanger than he.

Tanya Maguire Posted over a year ago

As a parent of children going through the Stoughton school system, you need a leader and someone as attentive with the children as Mr. C has been. I don’t know anyone else that is more deserving than him!

Janet Nichols Posted over a year ago

Rob certainly deserves this award! I was fortunate to have worked with Rob at the Gibbons School. I also see him working in his new role as principal at the Dawe School when I visit that building. At both schools he is well respected and is a positive role model for students and teachers. He is eager to learn new things, as well as teach others what he knows. He is quick to help a veteran teacher with new ideas and technology, and also listens to suggestions from veteran teachers, support staff and students. Rob's enthusiasm is contagious, and he definitely changes lives in a special way!

Geralyn Hanson Posted over a year ago

Rob Cancellieri truly loves working with children and has the ability to relate to his students, staff, families and PTO in a positive way. Jenn O'Sullivan's nomination says it all! Rob Cancellieri is well respected and loved here at the Dawe. He is no doubt a "Life Changer."

I am simply a Part-time Kindergarten Aide yet when I walk by the office to leave each day, if Mr. C is there he thanks me for coming in and working!!! He means it! Mr. C has been a wonderful ASSET to the Dawe School! The enthusiasm he brings to the building has made a positive transformation both to the students, parents and staff at the Dawe. When you walk into the building you can feel the excitement, the positive energy and the love and Mr. C is the contributing factor. I have read every comment in support of Mr. C’s nomination and agree with all the kind words and sentiments about our beloved Principal. In one year he has made a HUGE difference in our community and I’m happy to say this is OUR principal. Mr. C has a bright future ahead of himself and if he continues to be ther person that he is the future is looking BRIGHT for him and the community we live in. Keep striving for success!

To have a caring and compassionate person running the school shows in the atmospher, the staff and students. Mr. C has made such a huge impact on my family. Having a principal who knows your children’s names and takes the time to shake their hand every morning is such a gift!!

Mr C reminds everyone to work to their potential and is everyones best cheerleader.. Our children miss him at the Gibbons. The Dawe Dragons are so lucky to have him. Mr C is a life changer!

Leah Kneeland Posted over a year ago

No one deserves this recognition more than Mr. C! He was my oldest sons 5th grade teacher 3 years ago. Not only was he an amazing teacher, but my son considered him a real role model and friend. My husband, my kids dad passed away suddenly in 2014. Mr. C was the perfect male figure for him. He was someone my son could confide in, joke with, and Mr.C could always cheer him up if he was feeling down. They absolutely had a special bond. Mr. C always went out of the way to include my youngest son as well, making him feel very special. I truly believe both of my boys are much better for having Mr. C in their lives. As a parent he was very approachable and just a fun person to talk to. As a widowed mom, I can never thank Mr. C enough for all he's done for both of my boys. He always went far above and beyond his teaching requirements. He is a very special man and any child that gets the chance to know him is very very lucky!

Rob was always a kind and positive role model to all of his students when he was a fifth grade teacher at the Gibbons. He went out of his way to make each child feel like they were the best. We were so sad to see him leave our school but knew he would continue to make such a difference in the lives of the students, families and staff at the Dawe as their new principal. That is exactly what he is doing!! He truly is a life changer!!

I have had the pleasure of working with and observing Mr. Cancellieri become a life changer at two different elementary schools in Stoughton! Mr. C has grown into an extraordinary and passionate leader that truly cares about the well being and happiness of his staff and students. He is a positive presence in every room or hall he enters. In only one short year, Mr. C has brought the Dawe School to life with buzzing smiles and laughs around every corner. He has made students and staff feel safe and created a sense of belonging among all. Mr. C. goes the extra mile to help those struggling students, build a trust and rapport that has helped them become successful not only in school but in their home life. I am excited to see the impact Mr. C will have on so many students attending the Dawe School throughout the years to come!

Rob Cancellieri is an amazing man. He was a beloved teacher for many years here in Stoughton. The Dawe School was so lucky to have him hired to take the helm of that school. The positive changes he has brought to that community has been amazing. He has brought on more parental involvement as well as a staff appreciation. The children love AND RESPECT him as a leader. I am proud to nominate Mr. Cancellieri . He is and will always be a positive spark to the Dawe School and community!

Shawna Scafidi Posted over a year ago

Mr. Cancellieri is so involved in the school and visible! Upon my last visit to the Dawe School to attend a workshop, I saw Mr. Cancellieri outside greeting every child and parent at the crosswalk. I thought, "Wow, what a great way to start your day being greeted by the principal!" Rob is always so pleasant and upbeat and goes the extra mile even with something as small as standing at the crosswalk. I also met someone over the summer that happened to be a parent at the Dawe and she raved about Mr. Cancellieri and how he inspired her children to learn. Keep up the great work!

I was lucky enough to teach side by side with Mr. Robert Cancellieri for 5 years at the Gibbons Elementary School in Stoughton. I can honestly say that there is no one quite like him. Mr. C is positive, passionate, and uplifting. He takes time with people and makes everyone he encounters feel important; whether it is a student, parent, coworker, or friend. As a teacher, Mr. C made learning fun and was able to create a learning environment in which every one of his students felt safe and valued. I have no doubt that he has created such an environment as the principal of the Dawe Elementary School. I have witnessed firsthand the hardwork and dedication that Mr. C puts into everything he does. He is unwilling to settle for “good enough” when it comes to his students and never fails to go above and beyond in everything he does. Although I was sad to lose Mr. C as a colleague, I could not be happier for him in the success he has had as a new principal. He is the epitome of a Life Changer in every possible way.

kendra murphy Posted over a year ago

Robert Cancellieri is a true life changer not only for students, parents and teachers but the entire school. He brought sunshine where there were only gray skies. I have watched the school transform from a great place to be. The children, no matter who they are, are excepted as Dawe Dragons and feel the pride and love of the school. Parents feel a strong connection to the school and are more apt to join in to support the school. Where the school was once divided, he did the impossible and brought us all back together, making everyone feel the love, importance and respect that was taken away for 10 years. He has made me personally love my job again. I can't wait to go back to work and do what I have always loved with the respect and fun it had always been. Yes, Mr. C is a true life changer for our school and the town of Stoughton!!!

I am the parent of a 2nd grader, Dawe is a super elementary school and Mr C adds so much to the enthusiasm of the students, the teachers, and the families! He leads a monthly Character Building program that recognizes students' successes at a school-wide assembly, he is a great supporter of the PTO which translates to the support of families for school enrichment programs, and he spends much of his day popping into classrooms, joining in gym classes, and cruising the halls connecting with the whole Dawe community! His enthusiasm for his work at Dawe is contagious and a real benefit to our students' enthusiasm for learning, we are grateful for his leadership!

I am so grateful for this opportunity to support Mr. C’s nomination, as he has surely touched the lives of everyone in my family. I first met Mr. C in the Summer of 2017, before my son was about to begin kindergarten. We had planned a meeting so we could tell Mr. C about our Son and fill him in on his needs and the tricky situation we were dealing with. We were so incredibly nervous, but Mr. C put us at ease right away and we knew that the year would likely be tough, but that our amazing little boy would be in incredibly loving and capable hands at the Dawe. Mr. C did not disappoint, he never gave up on our son, and took a very personal interest in his success. He empowered the teachers to do what they do best and supported us as his parents, always cheering us on. Each day was a new day and we all did everything in our power to support our guy. At the beginning of this school year we had to examine our Son’s placement and have some tough conversations about where things were headed. Ultimately our team decided that a different school with specialized supports would be in his best interest. Mr. C handled this very hard situation like the true leader he’s proven to be time and time again. On the morning of my son’s first day at his new school our phone rang and it was Mr. C - he wanted us to know that he was thinking of us and wished our guy a great first day. Who does that?! Mr. C does - he’s a life changer!

I also agree with this nomination. Mr. C Is very compassionate and he gets it. His willingness to pitch in and help out wherever needed is amazing. I love seeing him play with the kids out at the playground. He even comes in to visit the morning program and shoot some hoops. He makes a point to visit the rooms on a daily basis to check in. He definitely “has our back”.

Mr. Rob Cancellieri is the most passionate, thoughtful and hardworking principal that I have worked for in my eighteen years of teaching. Mr. C. spends a tremendous amount of time, energy and patience building relationships with every student and staff member of our school. I have witnessed the special bond Mr. C created with one of my third grade students, which has had a noticeable positive influence on this boy’s behavior issues and emotional well-being. Mr. C. has become a positive male role model to this student. It takes a special person to run a school where everyone comes to work happy and the students’ smiles light up the halls. It is because of Mr. C.that the Dawe School is a happy place. There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Cancellieri is a life changer!

Mr. C. is a wonderful addition to the Dawe School family. My daughters love him as their school principal. Mr. C. has worked tirelessly to create an environment that encourages students conduct themselves with character. He also makes them feel valued, every day, by greeting them by name. I will never know how he can recall people's names the way he does. Even the parents are recognized and spoken to as if they are friendly neighbors. I hope he stays in Stoughton for a long time. He makes such a difference in the community.

I have worked in this school for almost 20 years. I have seen teachers, students, parents and yes, principals, come and go. Now that I am in the last 12 years of my career, I can't be more thrilled to be led by a true leader who is not only there for the kids, but for the staff and parents as well. He has leadership qualities that you can't really understand until you see them in action. He treats all the staff and parents as family, and more importantly treats ALL the students as they are his own children. And honestly, I've never seen our school climate happier and healthier! He has a gentle, yet direct way, to make sure each and every student's day is maximized to the fullest with academics, security and happiness. He is NEVER behind his desk doing work UNLESS it's directly for the students OR work that must be done for the superintendent or assistant superintendent immediately. He is constantly in our rooms, not to spy, but to be a positive presence in our school. And you can undoubtedly find him dancing to a GoNoodle with a class, playing a game on the rug, reading a book with students, outside playing basketball with students or jump rope too. I've seen him sing in music class as well! Everything that Jen wrote is so true of our leader. I couldn't be more thrilled to spend the last 12 years working for Rob Cancellieri because I can respect him and his decisions. I know his decision are for the better of the school and our students. He has made our place the place to BE!!

I'm so glad Ms. O'Sullivan nominated our principal. He has truly revitalized our school community. He brings a positive, can-do attitude that is infectious. He has really rallied our staff to work as team. Our students and parents respect him and actively seek him out.+.
