Music that Describes Britt

Britt Brill was nominated anonymously.

"I used to think math was just a series of pointless rules, nothing more than numbers on a page. But that changed when I entered Mrs. Brill's class," said the nominator. "From the first day, she had a way of making even the most complicated problems seem interesting. She didn't just teach students formulas, helped understand why they worked, and how math could solve real-world problems."

What stands out is how Mrs. Brill encourages her students.

"When I struggled with an algebra problem, instead of just giving me the answer, she'd ask questions that made me think. 'What do you think this means,' she'd ask, guiding me to figure it out independently. Her belief in me made a huge difference even when I wasn't sure of myself. She never made me feel bad for getting things wrong; instead, she showed me that mistakes were part of learning. I remember one time I was feeling down about how I was doing in math class, and she took time from her day to help me clearly understand what I was confused about without making me feel guilty. Thanks to Mrs. Brill, math became something I could enjoy and understand," said the nominator.

I have know Britt for roughly 25 years. She is a caring, dedicated person, to all in her sphere of influence. Britt came into our lives as an aide for my autistic daughter. My daughter has grown by leaps and bounds because of Britt's influence. I have seen her with other children, she finds ways to interact, teach, make learning fun. Finding ways to reach and relate to each one. She has a passion for teaching, but also a caring heart to let each child know they are important and special regardless of what their environment has been previously. Britt is the ideal person to win this award, she is a teacher children want and actually learn from.

Her students are so lucky to have such a dedicated and genuinely kind teacher. She goes above and beyond to make learning fun! Her passion to help others goes well beyond the walls of the classroom … whether at church, in the community, or with friends and family, she is always spreading love and joy! (And SO deserving of this nomination and award!)

Mrs. Brill, I can’t even put into words how much you've helped me and made me so that I am a good person. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting you my junior year when I was going through some pretty rough bumps in life and you’d slip me a note with encouragement and a reminding me that your room is always a place that I can feel heard and be heard. I am tearing up just writing this because you have impacted me so much, there were times when I wanted to give up on everything and it was your words and your kindness that brought me through. Your spark, your spunk, and your soul is truly beautiful. I am beyond grateful for you and the world is a better place because you are in it. Galatians 6:10 has always reminded me of you.

I'll post again, on behalf of Mrs. Brill. She is not only the wisest person I know, but she encompasses the best of teachers. She treats each each day as if it were new, and she envelopes each of her students. Through all the adversity she's been through, she still shows up every single day with a positive vibe and an amazing smile.

It is so wonderful to see Mrs Brill nominated for this award. I have known her for many years and actually had high school math class with her in the late 1990’s! She has always had passion to help others and teach. Her hand written notes to her students are an example of her big heart!

Britt formed out of her way to change the lives of each person she comes in contact with and in the process her life is also changed. She smiles and strikes up conversations with strangers, she gives friends the shirt off her back, and writes notes of encouragement to her students, our community, and her friends. Britt is the epitome of a life changer and not only has she changed my life by being in it, but I’m sure countless others feel the same way.

I am absolutely blown away by this beautiful message from one of my students and the comments made by others. I am absolutely blessed to work with such amazing kids on a daily basis. This is my 23rd year in education, yet only my second year teaching high school math. Prior to this, I taught Special Education. I do not take for granted all of the lives that I have had the ability to impact on a daily basis. I do my best to instill not only a love of math and education in general, but also the desire for my students to go out and change the world through making small impacts each and every day. One thing that I do to model this is by writing hand written cards. Each of my students receives a hand written card on their birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. and they also get a handwritten note anytime I notice them working really hard / persevering through a difficult task / helping a classmate / on a rough day / when they had a great game or performance / etc. I remember the feeling of getting letter from my grandma and want to pass on this lost art to my students. I have gotten many calls / emails from parents telling me that they have found a letter from me in their child's sock drawer, in their car, used as a bookmark, and in the cover of their binders. Parents have shared with me the impact that this one "small" gesture has made for their child and I hope that these small changes can continue to change the world in a positive way!! As Henry Adams said, “A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops.” Thank you SO much for the honor of being nominated for Life Changer of the Year. This is something I will cherish forever! Britt Brill

I’ve known Mrs. Brill since my Junior year and she is the most funniest and relatable teacher I’ve ever met. She knows the right words for helping someone when they are down and knows how to brighten someone’s day. In Algebra no matter how annoying or loud the class was she would try her best to teach us the best and somehow she managed to keep a smile on her face and stay positive. She is the strongest teacher I have ever met who fights through her toughest times. I appreciate Mrs. Brill so much and I thank her for being my teacher.

Ms. Brill is truly one of the best teachers I’ve had throughout high school. When I first entered her class, I struggled with Algebra, feeling completely lost. But through her support and teaching, I not only gained confidence in the subject, I was motivated to push myself further. Thanks to her encouragement, I went on to challenge myself with AP Statistics, something I never thought I’d be capable of. Experiencing her first year teaching at Waukesha West high school was truly the highlight of my year.

I have read about 100 thank you letters from her students and some of the parents as well. She gives encouragement to everyone and never makes them feel bad for not understanding math. She just explains it to them in terms that they can comprehend.

I have known Britt for about 30-ish years. She is not only my best friend and sister, but also the wisest person I know. I can fully acknowledge why she was nominated for this award. She LOVES each of her students. She follows a different method of teaching, wherein, she customizes her lesson plans to adjust to every single student. Britt is the teacher I wish I had, when I was a young learner.
