Ms. Wilson-Pugh is a sixth-grade social studies teacher at Bessemer City Middle School in Alabama. Ms. Wilson-Pugh radiates warmth and positivity; she is irreplaceable. Her kind and approachable demeanor instantly puts students (and colleagues) at ease. Her ever-present smile and laugh lights up any room. Ms. Wilson-Pugh is a veteran teacher with approximately 24 years of teaching experience, and she shares her wisdom with grace. She is pursuing an MEd in School Counseling from the University of West Alabama. She holds a BA in History from The University of Alabama and an MAEd in Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She offers sound advice and guidance through even the most interesting situations.
Ms. Wilson-Pugh's classroom (and the hallway) are a true reflection of her dedication and creativity. Her room is beautifully and intentionally decorated, and her invaluable years of experience shine through in the thoughtful details.
"I vividly remember when I first met her last July; I was impressed with the beauty (from the door to the disco lights to the walls). Social Studies was always my least favorite subject, but I am sure if I was in a classroom that looked as awesome as Ms. Wilson-Pugh's or had a teacher like her, it would've been my favorite," Verma added.
Ms. Wilson-Pugh's students are always actively engaged, which is a testament to her ability to make learning both rigorous and enjoyable, as well as her stern prioritization that her students receive a very high-quality education. Her patience and flexibility are consistently seen in her interactions with her colleagues. At the same time, those essential characteristics ensure that every child feels valued and supported regardless of their unique needs or circumstances. During my tenure as an Administrator in the Bessemer City School District (1979 - 2005) Tiffany set the bar high for all other students on campus. She is a scholar and a very talented young lady that welcomes a challenge. Tiffany possesses the qualities of a true leader, she listen to others and respects their points of view. Tiffany is unique, innovative, talented, intelligent, and has all the tools of a “change agent”. I am one of the counselors at Bessemer City Middle School, and I have only good things to say about Ms. Pugh. When I came to the middle school from another school in the district at the beginning of the school year, Ms. Pugh went out of her way to be warm and welcoming to me. She has always been supportive of all of the counseling initiatives, and utilizes so many trauma informed practices and instructional strategies that show her awareness and sensitivity to mental health concerns that her students face. I was truly blown away by her professionalism, organization, and knowledge of the MTSS process that she chairs at our school. I just don’t know where to begin to illuminate the essence of Mrs. Tiffany Wilson-Pugh as a person and as an educator. As I look back over the years, I keep seeing her as that little girl, running with enthusiasm after her first day in kindergarten. And, that seems like so many many years ago! Then later seeing her as a very busy exemplary student throughout her school years; and as an outstanding member of the high school marching band. I am thrilled to support the nomination of Ms. Wilson-Pugh for the Life Changer of the Year Award! I was one of Ms. Wilson-Pugh's students at James A. Davis Middle School. While my detailed recollection of my time at DMS has faded through the years, Ms. Wilson-Pugh left a lasting impression that I couldn't forget. She brought a warmth, enthusiasm, and refreshing demeanor to school everyday that rubbed off on anyone who she was around. I recall how uplifting, optimistic, and encouraging she was no matter how difficult circumstances might have been. At a time in kids' lives where insecurities, bullying, and often adverse circumstances may loom large, Ms. Wilson-Pugh was able to cut through the chaos and fill spaces with much needed positive energy that helped my peers and me persevere in our studies. You can hear the excitement in her voice when she brags about a student showing improvement. Ms. Pugh is deeply committed to her students and adapts her teaching method so that all students can experience a measure of success. The hours of preparation, in and out of the classroom is commendable and does not go unnoticed. She puts her heart and soul in preparing students for the world ahead, incorporating a variety of techniques. In addition to teaching U.S. History, she guides her students in social skills, and extracurricular activities. Ms. Pugh has spent countless hours working as a dance coordinator. This included: tryouts, practice, and performances; all after school hours. She has high expectations for each of her students. She models hardwork, tenacity and persistence, not giving up. For her, “Failure Is Not An Option.” Each student is expected to work to their ability level. Ms. Pugh radiates love and care and models the behavior she expects to see from them. In her classroom, she leads the way with kindness, and mutual respect. Ms. Pugh is very much in tune to the needs of her students because a great number of them have lower economic status attached to their name. She emphasizes to them that a title does not define you; also emphasizing that, “Don’t let them tell you who you are; show them who you are.” I have heard her refer to her students as “Shining Stars” and
“Diligent Learners.” As a long term educator, now retired, I have observed teachers in the teaching profession for many years. Ms. Tiffany Pugh truly stands out as a model teacher. She still loves growing and developing young minds. Her impact has been and will continue to be seen throughout the lives of these young people.
