LifeChanger of the Year Nominee Profile

Lamar Johnson was nominated by a colleague, Lindsey Jhones. 

"As the Assistant Principal of Liberty City Elementary School, it is my distinct honor to nominate our principal, Lamar Johnson, for the 2024-2025 LifeChanger of the Year Award," said Jhones.

Mr. Johnson is an exceptional leader whose vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to student success have transformed the school and inspired everyone fortunate to work with him. Mr. Johnson has created an environment where every student at Liberty City Elementary feels empowered to succeed. To address individual learning needs, he has implemented innovative programs, such as differentiated small-group instruction and mentorship initiatives. Through his leadership, academic performance has improved significantly, and students now have access to extended learning opportunities like before-school tutoring and spring break academies.

Mr. Johnson also prioritizes students' social-emotional well-being, ensuring they have the support and resources needed to thrive in and out of the classroom.

A Proven Ability to Make a Beneficial Difference in the Lives of Students: Mr. Johnson's leadership has directly impacted the academic and personal growth of the students. Under his guidance, Liberty City Elementary has experienced remarkable improvements, including a 15% increase in ELA proficiency and a steady rise in math and science performance. His implementation of innovative strategies, such as differentiated instruction and targeted intervention programs, ensures that all students, regardless of their starting point, are supported and challenged to excel. Mr. Johnson personally mentors students, often dedicating time to meet with those facing significant challenges, offering encouragement, and creating individualized action plans for their success.

One day, a fifth-grade student struggling academically and socially came to Mr. Johnson's office in tears. The student felt overwhelmed and had nearly given up. Mr. Johnson spent over an hour listening to the student, sharing his own experiences of overcoming challenges, and helping the child develop a step-by-step plan to get back on track. Over the next few weeks, Mr. Johnson checked in regularly with the student, celebrating every small victory. By the end of the school year, that same student was one of the top achievers in the class and had newfound confidence in themselves.

"Watching Mr. Johnson's care and belief in this student reaffirmed for me how much of a difference one person can make," said Jhones.

Through initiatives like the school-wide theme, "Accelerating to New Limits," he has united staff and students in a shared commitment to growth and achievement.
