Position: Cafeteria Manager
School: Miguel Contreras Learning Complex
School District: Los Angeles Unified School District
City, State: Los Angeles, CA
Edwin Fernandez was nominated by his supervisor, Soniya Perl.
Mr. Fernandez's impact on students and the community is multifaceted. As a cafeteria manager overseeing meals for 2,500 students across three schools, he ensures that each student receives nutritious and quality meals essential for their well-being and academic success. What sets Mr. Fernandez apart is his leadership beyond his immediate responsibilities. He supports 30 other cafeteria managers, offering guidance on best practices for recipes, meal production, and service. His role as an Academy Manager also includes supporting other school sites with recipe rollouts and helping elevate the district's overall quality of food services.
"A quick story on Edwin's commitment to the community was a last-minute request to make 500 pieces of the famous LAUSD Coffee Cake to raise money for the 'Sponsor-a-family' project benefitting 17,000 homeless students at LAUSD," said Perl. "He ran around to get the ingredients for the coffee cake and had 12 trays ready by 7:00 AM in addition to hot breakfast for the students at his schools!"
