I am so glad you are being recognized for this award! As a classroom teacher, I appreciated all the time and effort you put in to meeting the needs of my students by connecting them with high school listeners, or bringing in parent volunteers to assist in the classroom! You made it comfortable for community members to come in and share their special talents! It made such a great impression on my young writers to actually be working on a weekly basis with a real author! I learned so much as well. Thank you Melanie!!!

Congratulations, Melanie! I remember the first time I met you as a new teacher at Coastal Ridge! Your energy, positive attitude, and tireless caring for all our students and community members in York were so inspirational to me. I saw firsthand how impactful and beneficial your work was to not only our students but also every one of the volunteers you mentored! I learned so much from you, and in those early years, I felt more confident in bringing many volunteers into my classrooms to be a part of my student's learning! Thank you for all you do!
I have had the pleasure of knowing Melanie since I was in 6th grade (1998). Her thoughtfulness, patience, and consideration for others is truly unparalleled. As someone who has spent decades in the public school system, weathering storms, dealing with changes in administration, fighting budget battles, etc and still managing to approach each day with enthusiasm and a smile on her face is inspiring. Melanie has played an invaluable role in the personal/professional development of thousands of individuals within the town of York and we would not be the community we are today without her presence. <3

SO well deserved! Hard working and heart of gold. ?? Thanks Melanie for all you do for the York Community
I have had the honor of getting to know Melanie over the last four years, as a community member, a volunteer for her amazing Mentor program, a neighbor and am proud to now be able to call her friend.
Melanie’s mentorship program, for over 30 years, has reached not only hundreds of students, but hundreds of community volunteers as well. I started as a volunteer a year ago with a young lady in 4th grade. We had an amazing time getting to know each other, sharing family stories, learning our passions in life and just having some quality one on one time. My friend is now in 5th grade and we have continued our weekly visits, with the plan of staying together through graduation. Our visits are the highlight of my week.
This year, Melanie introduced me to an additional mentor opportunity. I now am part of a weekly Friendship Circle. I now also meet weekly with 4, 3rd grade girls. We have lunch together, we play games, read books, share fun information about ourselves and simply have time for these young ladies to have a little time, just for them. To see their sweet smiling faces each week, when they quickly grab their lunches so we can start our circle time, just fills my bucket!
Melanie’s presence, in any circumstance, whether meeting in her office, sharing a meal, bumping into each other at the grocery store or attending a community event, is always one that lights up everyone’s heart. Her smile is contagious and her hugs are healing.
Melanie is a force in this community, she looks out for her volunteers, her children, their teachers and parents and is always thinking about how we can all be better for each other.
Melanie loves her family with more passion and joy than I have ever seen. Having spent time with her adult children and grand children, it is clear that she has passed on the passion, work ethic and charisma to each one of them. To see their love and respect returned is an inspiration to many families and a tribute to her.
The community of York, Maine is blessed to have Melanie always advocating for us all and I am blessed to be able to call her friend.
I was lucky enough to meet Melanie when I joined in programming to tutor English to migrants in our community many years ago. I was also involved with Melanie in many aspects as my three children progressed through the school district. Melanie effortlessly navigates her professional life with an infectious positive energy. She shows how much she truly cares about the entire community and is a natural at connecting people and showing genuine interest in their lives. I'm not at all surprised by her nomination; she deserves every bit of recognition! She's someone who gives her time selflessly and has made an impact on so many. I'm very proud to know Melanie!
Mel and I became best friends in junior high 53 years ago! Mel is creative, smart and compassionate. She has always had a way of encouraging those around her to be the best they can be. She focuses on the positive and dares you to go beyond your comfort zone. This has been key to successfully leading and growing the York schools mentoring program which is a “ life changer” to so many children as well as mentors. The world has a brighter future because of Mel!
I have the pleasure of working with Melanie on a daily basis. She has opened my eyes to the joys and benefits of volunteering and the effect it can have on our schools. She is the ultimate professional in everything she does and her passion for our school district, our children, our volunteers, and our community are unrivaled. The number of children that her programs have helped is immense and York is so very fortunate that she has dedicated so many years and has made such an incredible difference!
Omg I could not have selected a better candidate for this nomination! Melanie has worked tirelessly with one of the most positive attitudes I’ve ever come across to bring love and compassion to any student in need or who stood to benefit by an extra dollup of attention. Whether it was spending hours and hours matching a high schooler with the perfect job shadow experience (utilizing employers as volunteers for a couple days) or matching a student with a mentor, Melanie always shows up with a smile and a “lets do this!” attitude! As her colleague she was someone I looked up to and as a community member she is someone I am so very grateful for. Melanie gets it and always looks at what CAN be done & doesn’t focus on the obstacles - a rare, beautiful quality. What’s more, and likely most difficult to quantify, is how she has improved the well-being of those she has sought out to volunteer - like me. Eight years ago Melanie matched me with a young fifth grader & as he gets ready to graduate from highschool this year, both he and I have lived that have been enriched by our connection. Life changing for SURE!
As Melanie's son, I am clearly biased; however Melanie is one of the most incredible and loving people I know. She taught me how to love. Her contributions to children and her community at large are indisputable. We are lucky to have her!
