Rose Pizzo was nominated by a colleague, Hunter Robinson.

Ms. Pizzo has consistently exceeded her official duties to provide the students with a nourishing, welcoming, and supportive environment. One of her most outstanding qualities is her genuine compassion for the well-being of every student. She understands nutrition's important role in academic success, and her commitment to offering balanced, appealing meals reflects this. Ms. Pizzo ensures the students have various food options, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and wholesome entrees, so they have the energy and focus they need to thrive in the classroom. Beyond the standard cafeteria fare, Ms. Pizzo creates new and exciting dishes similar to foods students eat outside of school to keep them engaged in the School Meals Program.

Her commitment to student well-being, however, goes beyond providing healthy meals. Recognizing that some students may need extra support, Ms. Pizzo established a "share table" where students can leave uneaten, unopened food for others who still feel hungry. This simple but impactful initiative has helped countless students feel cared for, allowing them to return to class focused and satisfied.

In addition to her work inside the cafeteria, Ms. Pizzo has proven herself a constant source of encouragement and support for students beyond meal times. Whether it's a kind word during lunch or a thoughtful conversation when students arrive at school, she makes herself available to students and always takes the time to listen. Her warm presence is felt throughout the school, and the relationships she has built with students foster a sense of community and belonging that is truly special.

Ms. Pizzo and her dedicated team have made an extraordinary impact outside the cafeteria walls. Recognizing that financial constraints might prevent some students from enriching opportunities, Ms. Pizzo led fundraising efforts to help five students attend an out-of-state choir trip. Her initiative and commitment allowed these students to participate in a life-changing experience, creating memories that will undoubtedly shape their futures.

Beyond her role as a cafeteria manager, Ms. Pizzo has shown a profound commitment to individual students and their families. She and her staff organized a special outing to take a student and their siblings—who had never been to a movie theater before—to see a film together. This thoughtful gesture reflects her deep understanding of the importance of experiences and joy in a child's life, showing students that they are seen, valued, and celebrated. Her selflessness, kindness, and steadfast dedication have touched countless lives, and her positive influence radiates throughout the school.

"I wholeheartedly recommend Rose for the National Life Group LifeChanger Spotlight Award based on her exemplary service as the School Food and Nutrition Manager at Bernard Middle School. I am confident she will continue enriching the lives of all she serves," said Robinson.

Rose, Congratulations on your award! Your consistent hard work and dedication have greatly impacted all the children whose lives you've touched for over 20 years - and in ways that even they will not ever fully understand, like ripples in a pond. I love your common-sense approach to empower students to be mindful of the needs of others and to not waste the abundant and precious blessing of the food they receive each day, by making it possible for them to share unopened food items at the food table. May God continue to bless you with strength, courage, and wisdom in your continued work and in your life.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Rose since our children attended Blades and Bernard together. Although we don’t see each other as often these days, Rose’s warmth, kindness, and gracious demeanor are constants. Her passion for students is truly remarkable, and her impact is profound. As the current President of the Mehlville Board of Education, I am deeply grateful for her inspiring leadership and the example she sets for all employees. Rose is the embodiment of capability, care, and compassion. Congratulations, Rose—you truly deserve this nomination! Peggy

Bernard provided daily lunches for anyone in the district who wanted to pickup during the school Covid closures and most days Rose was out delivering the food with a smile and kind note/word. Often times, she was the only outsider we would have contact with and she was so sweet my husband and I would argue over whose day it was to pickup. What a blessing to have her in our community.

My name is Sue. For twenty years I was Roses manager. When I retired Rose took my position. There was no one more qualified for this position. Rose has one of the kindest hearts I have ever come across in my life. She is a strong, driven, and thoughtful woman. She’s always thinking of ways to make people’s lives better. She truly has a kind heart. It reflects in her job and most of all in her everyday life. The students and staff at Bernard are what drives Roses. Her accomplishments, attitude, and love for her fellow Bernard family and students are what makes Rose at such an acceptional person.

Rose has an energy that is simply infectious. Her smile, warmth, and positivity impacts those who come into contact with her, which is literally the entire school. I'm fortunate to begin my day in the cafeteria for morning duty where Rose is greeting the students for breakfast and checking in with staff. It's ironic that Rose calls herself "lucky" to work here when everyone at Bernard feels that way about her; she's truly phenomenal.

Ashley Brake Posted over a year ago

Thomas McGuirk Posted over a year ago

For any teacher who has tried to teach a hungry student it is near impossible, one reason, of the many, Rose is the heart of our school. To say that she does her job in an injustice because she shines like a light house to these students and staff, shining her light, love and compassion on all of us at Bernard Middle School. From replacing a dropped lunch to making sure that there is no hungry child, she cares for each child as if they were her own. I am reminded of the song by Adam Sandler "Lunch Lady Land" how that silly song makes us laugh and smile but that is the very thing that Rose gives the students a laugh, a smile and a lot of love making them feel as if they were given a warm hug; parents can rest assured that their child is being care for just like they would.

Susie Posted over a year ago

I work as a cafeteria sub in the Mehlville school district and have had the pleasure of working with Rose numerous times. It’s evident from the moment you walk into her kitchen, how positive and caring she is as a manager and a person in general. She is always hands-on in the kitchen, managing her office responsibilities in a very fast paced environment, yet never fails to have a nice comment and a smile for me when I am substituting. It’s very evident all her kitchen ladies love her and as a substitute, I am always thrilled when I am asked to work there.

Josephine Serra Posted over a year ago

Rose is my cousin. We grew up together. I really know what my cousin really is like. She meets all the characteristics that a person really wants to work with and care for children. Rose is a professional at what she does. She has been exposed to hospitality since she was a child. Practice makes perfect. We used to have family style dinners that made memories to remember as an adult. How can she not continue to do what she knows best at serving hungry tummies. I sure can see her doing her job to the fullest of her ability. I’m proud of my cousin for being an amazing daughter, mother, wife, sister and friend. She continues to smile and loves the people that she works with. She has a big heart like her parents.

Amanda McKay Posted over a year ago

Rose is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. She is some that is 100% here for all the students and creates a welcome environment. She goes above and beyond her "typical work duties". Whenever we have field trips, she always makes sure that my students have a lunch available in case they didn't eat, even if it is after the typical lunch hours. I also expressed that some of our buses were running behind in the mornings. Due to this, she has kept the cafeteria open in order to make sure everyone (including students that were late) had the option of breakfast. Rose always has an idea to help someone's situation and truly cares about everyone.

Rose has a real love for her job. The kids and their well being are very important to her and she strives to be the best for them!

Ariana Hays Posted over a year ago

Rose went above and beyond last year when my teenage son suddenly had an allergic reaction to either peanut or soy bean. She made sure they had healthy options available for him until his allergist could confirm it was peanuts and not soybean(which took 2 months to get into). You don’t realize how many food options have soy bean in them until your child might be allergic to it. She truly was a lifesaver for us. I will never forget the time and effort she put in to making sure he was safe at school. I’m forever grateful to her for taking care of my son like I would. ??

Lily Posted over a year ago

Rose is truly deserving of this award. She is the sweetest. She makes sure all of my special education students are fed and happy each day. She takes time out of her busy day to talk with teachers and students to make sure everyone is doing okay and she helps others in ways that go way beyond her duties of the cafeteria manager. She is a friend to all. Her positive attitude is contagious!

I wanted to share how much Rose has meant to me personally, especially during a difficult time in my life. At the time, I didn’t know her very well, but she still took the initiative to notice that I wasn’t quite myself. Rose reached out to me, took the time to listen, and made me feel truly heard. Her words were incredibly reassuring, reminding me of the value I bring to my role as a counselor. She made me feel seen and appreciated in a way I hadn’t realized I needed. She even told me that she and her friends would pray for me, and it honestly brightened my day during one of the toughest moments I’ve had this year. It felt as though she knew exactly what I needed to hear. It was such a meaningful experience that I even called my mom afterward to tell her about it. Rose’s kindness and thoughtfulness are such a gift, and I am deeply grateful for her support.
