Eileen Mahoney was nominated by a colleague, Curt McDermott.

Ms. Mahoney works with students ranging from first-year students to seniors who have yet to understand the value of English class. Ms. Mahoney meets these students where they are. She welcomes them to her space, learns their names in nanoseconds, and tells them their presence is crucial. She immerses them in books, builds on their interests and aspirations, and expects them to present their best in everything they do. Her approach to teaching is a winning mix of clear expectations, patience, discipline, and spot-on flexibility honed through years of thoughtful reflection and practice.

"There's not an administrator in this building who hasn't returned from a trip to her room amazed at the cooperation and participation she elicits from students who routinely have not shown that behavior in other classes. The teachers and staff have given up trying to describe exactly what she does; they call it 'magic,'" said McDermott.

More importantly, Ms. Mahoney doesn't give up on anything or anyone. When presented with tricky situations, such as students in the high school's adult education program requiring a half credit of English when the school only offered a full-credit class, she worked with the students to design a tailored program that upheld rigorous academic standards while meeting their specific needs. Then, over a semester—as she taught a whole load of day classes and two additional courses at night—she patiently and consistently implemented that program.

"I'm not joking when I say that if Eileen ever decides to leave our school, she'll have to beat me to the door. Eileen Mahoney is a consummate professional. She brings respect to the teaching profession and true education to the students in her care. Thank you for the opportunity to honor her here," said McDermott.

"LifeChanger" is the PERFECT way to describe Eileen Mahoney. I have never met a teacher who is so perfectly-suited to her job. She is the embodiment of a comforting hug in human form, and she excels in every aspect of her profession. It brought tears to my eyes to see she received this nomination. I can't think of anyone more deserving, and I know many wonderful educators! Kudos, dear Eileen!

When I think of unmatched prowess in the classroom, my mind immediately goes to the name Eileen Mahoney. Her skill to teach from the middle to all of her constituents is an unmatched talent amongst her peers. Students know that they will learn and feel seen by Eileen, no matter their natural ability or yearning to learn; especially at 8 o'clock in the morning or after school hours! Eileen spends her time both in and outside of the school building carefully crafting meaningful lessons for 21st Century learners that connect to their current state of living. She turns her English lessons into engaging, actionable moments for students to truly engage in critical thinking. I have benefitted from this personally when Eileen took it upon herself to be my invaluable guide and mentor while teaching a new class in past school years. Ms. Mahoney is the ideal role model for both staff and students. She is truly a one in a million woman and peer!

Ms. Mahoney has a heart of gold with character to match! Her kindness is immeasurable as she patiently and compassionately works with students of all levels and learning styles. She has a Mary Poppin size bag of tricks that seem to never end; always looking for the right dose of sugar for to help her students learning go down a little easier. She continuously finds ways to be honest and connect with her students which in turn creates a genuine and respectful learning environment fostering success. Eileen is amazing! To say we are beyond appreciative and tremendously lucky to have her in our academic community would be an understatement. Thank you for being you and bringing your best to us and your students every day!

Mrs. Mahoney sets the gold standard of teaching. She is a patient, kind, nurturing and empathetic person, who brings out the best in everyone she works with. Mrs. Mahoney always find a way to connect with her students and enables them to earn the credits they need by allowing them to play to their strengths, whilst also helping them overcome difficulties. She is dedicated and goes above and beyond to help her students. She is well respected by co-workers and always fondly remembered by ex-students. It has been an absolute privilege to work with Mrs. Mahoney over the last few years.

Eileen Mahoney is the most effective English teacher I have ever seen, and also serves as the grandmother so many of our kids need. She nurtures relationships and has the uncanny ability to teach those I thought were 'unteachable'. Kudos on her long overdue recognition.
