Darla Mayo was nominated by a parent of a student, Charlotte Atkinson.

"Darla Mayo, a junior high English teacher, has made a lasting impact on her students, particularly those with dyslexia. When my son transferred from another state to Texas, he struggled with his dyslexia diagnosis. Ms. Mayo was the first teacher to truly help him excel academically, and more importantly, she helped him feel confident in himself, showing him that he was neither different nor inadequate," said Atkinson.

"Ms. Mayo may set high expectations and push her students to do their best, but that dedication and belief in my son made her one of his favorite teachers. Even though he is now in high school, he still makes a point to say hello to her and brings her a Christmas gift every year—a testament to their bond. Ms. Mayo has completely transformed my son's experience with school and our family's perspective on how he approaches learning. Thanks to her guidance, he is now thriving in high school," said Atkinson.

"Ms. Mayo is an exceptional teacher who takes the time to truly listen to her students and adapt to their needs. She helps them succeed by embracing how their brains work, no matter how different that may be from the norm. I am forever grateful for her, and words can hardly express my deep appreciation for the life-changing role she has played in my son's journey," said Atkinson.
