Harvey Lockhart was nominated by a colleague, Leata Price-Land.

Music helps with everything in life. Studies have shown music helps in science and math. It gives students the confidence to stand in front of others when they might not otherwise have had the courage to do so.

"I have been with the district for five years and have watched Harvey place an instrument in the hands of many students who have never tried to play," said Price-Land. "The next thing I know, these students are graduating and going to college for music. This is life-changing, not only because they might not have had the confidence to go to college, but they may have obtained a music scholarship in the process."

Mr. Lockhart has passion for his students and often acts as a father figure when they need guidance. He exposes them to fine dining, table cloths and service when they play for country clubs and corporate events. He partners with tuxedo shops to help his students with discounts on black tie attire so they can look the part when playing.

"I salute Harvey for all of the life lessons he provides to his students when they come to his class learning to learn an instrument. They may not have gotten this chance without him," Price-Land said.

For years, before he was out of high school, Mr. Lockhart devoted years of his life to students in the inner-city. His love for music permeated the lives of those he lead as a student-leader at his high school as well as those he taught and mentored at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, a performing arts center located in the heart of Miami's inner city. I can think of no one more deserving of the LifeChanger of the Year Award. Mr. Lockhart receiving this award would simply recognize what those who know him have observed his entire life, he is a Life Changer! He saves lives through life lessons taught via the vehicle we call music. The live's he saves via the performing arts are simply the result of Mr. Lockhart's love and passion for helping people become the best version of themselves. Every farmer knows that a harvest only comes as a result of planting in great soil; Mr. Lockhart is that great soil who produces fantastic young men and women of society.

I am so pleased to see Mr. Lockhart's nomination. He works tirelessly to help young people develop their musical talents when all odds are against them. You know he is changing lives when you run into his students at a jazz club on a random week night and realize they are "regulars". These students are recognized as equals in the eyes of local musicians and make a name for themselves all around town. This would not be a possibility without Mr. Lockhart's passion for music education and how it can give students exposure to the world beyond their neighborhood, that most don't get the opportunity to go beyond. I applaud Mr. Lockhart and wish him the best, as he is truly changing lives!

I Just Want To Start Off By Saying, Lockhart Really Changed My Life, Especially Music Wise. He’s Like A Second Father To Everyone, You Can Talk To Him About Anything, No Matter What The Situation Is , He’s There !! As Many Times I Felt Discouraged, He’ll Give You That Look and Says “Come To My Office”. Everyone Says “The Lockhart Talk”, It’s Worth The Talk That He Gives Us. He Encourages Everyone To Keep Going Never Quit. “Winners never Quit, Quitters Never Win” he says. I Wanted To Quit Everything That Involves Music, But I Can Be Missing Out On Opportunities I Can Get, He Tells Me All Opportunities, Look At Me Now I’m Ready To Learn & Take This Journey

Harvey has been instrumental is connecting local teens to musical opportunities. My son attends a different high school in town but Harvey invited him to sing and play with his group. Harvey takes the time to mentor and cultivate young talent, which is a skill that few people still engage in. Harvey is a Life Changer and deserves to be rewarded for all of his hard work, passion and persistence. Bravo to Harvey!
