Beau Menchaca was nominated by Luisa Ruiz, a member of his community. This is the third time Mr. Menchaca has been nominated for LifeChanger of the Year. He was named a LifeChanger of the Year Award winner during the 2015-16 school year, receiving $3,000 to be shared between him and Century High School.

Since his arrival as the higher education counselor and coordinator, Mr. Menchaca has used a variety of dynamic techniques to inform students about post-secondary education and financial aid.  A transformation of the Higher Education Center (HEC) took place under Mr. Menchaca's leadership, and it became a vibrant, versatile and vital place for students.  His philosophy is that all students are welcome in the HEC - freshmen through senior students, ESL students, special education students, community college-bound students, military-bound students, workforce-bound students, and university-bound students. Instead of focusing on the top 10% of the student population, all students are given support and help in the HEC.

Mr. Menchaca wanted to think outside the box and provide information about post-secondary education for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students sooner in their high school education. He has been able to secure a $90,000 grant for the last four years.  A portion of the grant was allocated to funding field trips to colleges and universities for sophomore and junior students.  They were able to explore and experience a college campus, and the counselors reported that many of the field trip attendees came to their offices afterwards to discuss the possibility of them being able to attend a college. Another portion of the grant was used to cover the cost of SAT prep classes as well as a college level counseling class for freshmen.

At the start of the financial aid season, Mr. Menchaca holds a Cash for College/Financial Aid Kick-Off Assembly.  Seniors are presented with crucial information about FAFSA/Dream Act applications and are encouraged to attend the Cash for College/Financial Aid event, which is for both students and parents and is sponsored by the HEC.  Pre-Financial Aid Night workshops are also held to inform and prepare students so that they and their parents have all the necessary paperwork on the actual Cash for College/ Financial Aid Night. He implemented a new method of notifying parents about the Cash for College/Financial Aid Night called The Padres Promotores. This is a parent support group that was utilized to make phone calls and personally invite each senior's parents to attend this event. This new method of contacting parents and making personal outreach reflected a cultural sensitivity and awareness, and made a crucial difference in the resulting success of the event. Mr. Menchaca contacts his local elected officials to send out invitations and to make robo-calls.  He contacts his local community bank, which provides free financial aid planners for students.  He realized that a combination of contacting both parents and students is essential, and that a number of stakeholders need to be involved in order to ensure a successful outcome.

Mr. Menchaca has organized four Cash for College events per year over the past five years and has had incredible results with all of them.  The California Student Aid Commission has reimbursed Century High School with $900 each year for the past four years, and Mr. Menchaca has used these funds to award three students with $300 scholarships each year. The California Student Aid Commission recognized Mr. Menchaca with the Arthur Marmaduke Award for his efforts in helping students get to college.

In alignment with the White House's REACH Higher Initiative, Mr. Menchaca organized Century High School's first ever College Signing Day in 2015, and it has since become an annual event.  All senior students walk the red carpet as they proudly display the sign of the higher education institution they will be attending while being photographed by student paparazzi.  Students get their picture taken with the principal and sign their name and where they'll be attending in the fall on a mural.  The mural is kept in the higher education center to serve as a visual to the underclassmen of what is to come senior year.  A special luncheon is served for the senior students, and this event is witnessed by the entire school. Today, every high school in Santa Ana USD organizes a Signing Day for their students.

Graduation Caminata is another innovative activity that was inaugurated by Mr. Menchaca a few years ago at Century High School. They were the first school in the District to do such an activity. Seniors sign up to visit feeder elementary schools wearing their caps and gowns and holding certificates indicating where they are attending college. They go on a special procession through the campus and talk to students to promote high school completion and the importance of pursuing higher education.  The earlier that students are introduced to the possibility of higher education, the greater is the likelihood that students will think more about their future educational plans.  Principals and teachers at the elementary schools commented about how much they and the students enjoyed this activity. Today, every comprehensive high school in Santa Ana USD has followed Mr. Menchaca's footsteps in organizing this event at their feeder elementary schools.

"In my daily interactions with Beau, dedication is the first word that comes to mind when mentioning his name," said Ruiz. "He understands the importance of collaboration and realizes that it takes a village to help students successfully meet their potential.  He is truly proactive and committed to seeing that every student is able to achieve their higher education goals."

Mr. Menchaca will drive students to college interviews and arrange meetings with people who can be influential in getting a student accepted at a private college.  He constantly seeks out and publicizes scholarships, and under his leadership, scholarship money has increased every year. Mr. Menchaca makes sure that parents are included in the higher education process from the start, and therefore, they take a more active role in encouraging their students. He tirelessly promotes the importance of counselors and organizes the National School Counseling Week Activities. He is there to support the students, and they know it. Mr. Menchaca always celebrates student success, whether it's academic or in their higher education pursuit.  He organizes prize patrols for scholarship recipients, and in the last five years scholarships have increased by 18%. Collaboration, cooperation and contribution are his watchwords.

"As a Higher Education professional as well as a community member, I can testify that Mr. Menchaca has had an tremendous impact on all students," said Ruiz. "Students that have previously graduated return to Century to share their educational successes with Mr. Menchaca and to thank him for his advise, help and support."

Mr. Menchaca is absolutely incredible and has made my high school experience one to truly treasure. He always seeks the best for Century's students and will give his all to ensure this. From hosting community engagement celebrations to hosting late nights to ensure college application/financial aid completion, he dedicates hours of his time to bring the best for Century. Whether it be connecting students and teachers with the right resources to maintaining an amazing relationship with the Santa Ana community, specifically through Kiwanis of Santa Ana, Mr. Menchaca utilizes everything he has in order to create the greatest impact for the population he is serving. I am grateful for the numerous programs he has recommended/made possible for me, as they have opened up many doors of growth for me. Mr. Menchaca made it possible for me to attend HOBY, a life-changing 4-day leadership seminar, where I was able to connect with various leaders and immerse myself in a group of motivated and bright individuals, who soon became like part of my family. Mr. Menchaca is a true leader at Century High School as well as within the context of the larger Santa Ana community. As I continue with my academic and leadership pursuits, I find Mr. Menchaca always supporting me and I am incredibly grateful to have this life changer in my life. Mr. Menchaca is a very special individual who has made Century a great place to be. Thank you for all that you have done and every way that you have contributed to my life, I truly wouldn't have been standing where I am today if it weren't for you.

When I needed money for school, Mr menchaca would hire me to have me come and put files together put bulletin boards together and other duties at CHS. he would have me work with the registrar and do some filing and inputting of information on two Excel spreadsheets. Just by Mr menchaca hiring me I gained some some work skills that I can put on my resume for my very first job on campus at the University. He doesn't just give money away but he gives you experience that you can use when you leave high School. I know I'm not the only student that Mr menchaca has hired. There are many of us and the money comes out of his pocket. Thank you for being somebody I can always count on.

I thank Mr. Menchaca because all of the events he put together were always about recognizing students and staff. He never was looking for the spotlight. If scholarship donors came on campus he would make sure that their would be students there to meet them and network and build a relationship for future scholarship donations for us students. Every event he planned there was always a century student representation. I learned so much from him just by watching him how he would build relationships with our community. Thank you Mr menchaca for helping all students at Century high School. You are a true life changer.

CHS - Commitment, Honor, Success. This is the mantra of Century High School and Beau, you embody these words along with extra doses of dedication, concern and encouragement. You have impacted countless lives in your almost 20 years of counseling as attested to by the awards you have received over the years. You have been a Life Changer of the Year. Your nomination was supported by many, many students who sent in e-mails to share their experiences with the award committee and to commend you for your unwavering dedication and guidance. Last year, you were the Marmaduke Counselor of the Year and once again, numerous students, both past and present, e-mailed the award committee praising your abilities as a counselor. Students feel that you always have their best interests in mind and are willing to listen and search for solutions. Your positive attitude, optimistic outlook and sense of humor have contributed to creating a great rapport with students, staff and parents. As you often say, “we get older, but your clientele ages never change”. You know it is up to you to adjust, be innovative and keep current. You always strive to give your best to the students, and Beau, you always do.

An example that illustrates how Beau goes above and beyond the job requirements is the transformation of the Higher Education Center at Century. Beau made it his mission to make the Higher Education Center a welcoming, all inclusive center. Over five years , he raised the FAFSA submission and completion rates by 78%. The number of students attending college rose from 18% to 76% . Last year, under Beau's leadership, Century High School was number ten in the entire state for FAFSA submission and completion rates. These statistics reflect how effectively Beau worked to make higher education an option for all seniors. Beau collaborated with his site counselors and the Achieving College Partners to provide the best college guidance. He recruited a number of community members and parent groups, in addition to the counselors, to aid the seniors in filling out FAFSA forms and college applications. His master lists show the continuous monitoring and tracking of the students higher education progress. He was committed that every senior would fill out a FAFSA form and a college application, so that no matter what happened in September, they would have the paperwork in place to go on to higher education. Beau wanted each senior to have an opportunity to be successful.

There are a number of great counselors in the Santa Ana Unified School District. However, Beau Menchaca is in a class of his own. In his almost 20 years of counseling, he has received a number of certificates, recognitions and awards including District Support Staff of the Year. His passion for counseling is well know and he is always thinking ahead about the next project to help students succeed or to recognize their academic achievements. He focuses on all three ASCA domains; academic, social-personal, career and continues to follow the ASCA Counseling Model. Whenever possible in the community, he promotes counseling and the great things that counselors do every day. He is a member of the American School Counseling Association. He started the College Signing Day event to recognize and congratulate graduating seniors on their future plans. The Graduation Caminata is an event that Beau spearheaded in which graduating seniors, wearing their caps and gowns, return to Century's feeder elementary schools and meet with students to encourage them to continue their education and continue on to college. Both of these events are now a part of the senior activities at all the high schools in the District. Beau also established Centurion Week to recognize and celebrate all students who are on track to graduate. Former OC Superintendent, Bill Habermehl, attended Centurion Week and he said that it was a celebratory event that should be replicated in every high school. Beau is always in the forefront of innovative ideas to help students achieve academic success. He has been a leader in incorporating the use of data to create a variety of data bases to monitor his students educational progress. He makes it a point to communicate with parents and to plan proactive interventions His seniors' graduation rate is always high. Beau is a problem solver. When working with students, he is willing to put in whatever extra time or effort is required in order to achieve a successful academic outcome. He has the proven ability to a make a difference in a student's life and he does so every day.

Congratulations to my site supervisor Beau Menchaca on being nominated as a LifeChanger of the Year! He took me under his wing almost a year ago and in that time I’ve seen his dedication to students and colleagues in action. He’s a life changer to students, and as a student myself has changed mine by facilitating a high quality, extensive internship education. I can’t say I would feel as confident preparing for a future as a school counselor had it not been for Beau, so thank you and congratulations! #LCOY LifeChanger of the Year

Mr. Mechaca definitely deserves this award. He has always been so supportive towards students and gave us an extra push to go to college or informing us about new scholarships and whatsoever. When i was a former senior high school student at century, all I could remember is Mr. Menchaca going from class to class informing us about FAFSA,scholarships and school trips. He didn't have to go thru all that trouble but its the passion and motivation he sees in our eyes which is remarkable. Even though at the time he went through a rough time he still puts up a smile on his face and his students first and that to me is unforgettable. Every time I stumble upon him he would always call me "Dr. El" because he knew my love for science. He may not know this but i am currently going to college and pursuing my career on becoming a Doctor. I am forever grateful having Mr. Menchaca as a counselor, friend, and mentor.

Beau Menchaca - it is 2018 and you are letting the engines roll! I met you in 2004 and I'm happy to know you are still changing lives! Please continue all the hard work in counseling students and giving all you got to the community. Many of us would not be where we are today without your assistance. You play an integral part in the live's of students. Most of us need a role model or a voice to guide us the right direction. We come from poverty and grow up knowing what we see at the steps of our doors. Some of us had parents who worked multiple jobs to support the household. We never received advice about planning for our future. Thank you for being the "parent" and encouraging us to strive for excellence.

Class of 2012 & E-business Academy alumni, Mr. Menchaca has been an asset not only for Century High School, but to SAUSD. As my counselor, he advised me to go beyond the extra-mile. He contributes to the centurion community by doing student outreach with projects celebrating centurion pride. Mr. Menchaca seeks advise from students on whats best for other students who do not participate in school activities (wants to involve and care for the students). His motivational energetic speeches always gave confidence and self-esteem to build up a strong path not only during high school but beyond. I can proudly say that I am thankful to have had Mr. Menchaca as a friend and guidance counselor during my years in high school. Always with a smile willing to help out; this action of his I apply it on daily basis in my job.

Mr. Menchaca, I am so proud of you for being nominated for this award! Thank you so much for being a Life Changer in MY life. You have always been a great listener and an encouraging counselor. When I was a Sophomore at Century High School, I was put into foster care and taken to a group home. It was a very dark and scary time for me. I felt separated from my family, afraid of the future's uncertainties, and very isolated from the world. I was pleasantly surprised that you were the first person to come visit me. Your capacity for compassion and understanding was exactly what I needed. And you remembered that I love to read and write! I don't know how you could remember with that many students on your load, but you brought me some books and a beautiful journal. These were my only belongings (and my only coping mechanisms) for some time and I still treasure them very much. As I went from placement to placement in the foster care system, I insisted on staying at Century High School. You made it clear that your office was always open to me and you always welcomed me with such warmth. It's because of singular, amazing people like you who reach out to make a difference that I was determined to graduate and create a better life for myself. I am now waiting for acceptance letters to transfer to a four-year university. Thank you so much for the positive, uplifting impact you have had in my life. You went all that way just to see one student. I needed that.

This is the man who made Allegheny happen for me. I am now in Pennsylvania, and will be here for four years. He constantly encouraged me to keep applying for scholarships and to talk to financial aide to further understand my financial aide package. He also helped hundreds of students and parents get connected. In the end parental support and staff support is key in the academic success. That's what Mr. Menchaca has to offer above many other things he does for his students. With more people like him, higher education will sky rocket in no time. Thank you Mr. Menchaca for all you hard work and support. It takes a lot for someone to plan an Idea but it's takes even more to actually make the idea happen and you, you make things happen.

Beau is committed to providing the best possible service to his students and goes above and beyond to meet his students’ needs. Participation in the school community is a hallmark of Beau’s. Previously he has been a WASC Focus Co-Chair, served on 2 school improvement committees, School Culture and School Publicity. He has also had experience in other educational positions including being a Saturday School Monitor, taught a Study Skills Class through ROP and coordinated the 10th grade after school Parent/Student counseling program. He was also one of the co-site director's of our local colleges credit recovery program.

Carolina Tercero Fernandez Posted over a year ago

Beau's school district is emphasizing data driven plans and solutions, and Beau is in the forefront of this trend. He has designed and implemented referral strategies to alternative programs based on data he has accessed through his District’s Data Directory. The establishment and maintenance of data bases and the creation of spread sheets are priorities for him and he uses them constantly. Beau’s records are accurate and his organizational skills are paramount. I am impressed by Beau’s persistent efforts to ensure that his students graduate. He is determined to develop the best individualized intervention plan and he often utilizes a combination of before school classes and after school credit recovery programs. Beau is proactive with initial contacts with his students and goes beyond the mandatory graduation check for his seniors. He calls out all his students who receive a D and/or F on their six week report cards in addition to the semester grade report. He meets with all of his students once in the Fall and once in the Spring. He meets with all of his students parents at least once a year. Solutions to raising grades are discussed with the student and parents and proposals are made including referral to tutoring, parent contacts, and teacher conferences. Parent communication is an integral part of Beau’s outreach program. He not only alerts parents when students are failing a class, but he is constantly calling them to let them know a piece of “good news” about their student. Positive reinforcement is only one technique that Beau utilizes to keep students on track and focused on their education goals. Every opportunity is examined by Beau to help his students to be successful and he believes alternative programs, are instrumental in helping students recover credits and to succeed. He has a positive attitude and a can do mentality and he endeavors to instill and nurture a spirit of hope in all students that they can succeed and ultimately graduate.

As Higher Education Coordinator, you have been able to improve the number of college applications that have been submitted and notably increase the financial aid completion rates as well as increase the number of scholarships that have been awarded to students. I know that many former as well as present students and co-workers have told you how much you did to help them out.
