"I am a school counselor at Heatherbrae and am passionate about making all students feel safe, valued, and included. I am the PBIS Coordinator on our campus because I believe positive reinforcement is the best way to guide our scholars toward academic, social, behavioral, and emotional success. I am also passionate about bettering the mental wellness of our students, staff members, and community. I make it my mission to provide safe spaces across our campus for all members of our Heatherbrae community to come and be themselves. While there seem to be too many needs to put into words, some of our top needs on campus involve providing all students with equitable opportunities to learn and grow," said Roberts.
"I am constantly searching for new items to use when creating safe spaces for our students and staff. I am creating a 'Staff Safe Space' room on our campus where staff members can regulate their emotions, decompress, and prioritize their mental well-being. I still need items for this room, such as essential oils, yoga mats, sensory items, adult coloring books, books, puzzles, and more. I am also creating Sensory Paths around our campus for students to use when they are dysregulated or feeling big or out of control. These paths will require many supplies such as paint, stencils, paint brushes, and finishing sprays to become a reality," said Roberts.
"I am also planning to organize a 'Family SEL Night' this year, for the first time on our campus, which will provide our families with an evening of fun, mindfulness, and mental wellness activities that they can participate in and then take home with them to put into practice with their families on a more consistent basis. Some of the items we will need for this event include buckets and drumsticks (for bucket drumming and music therapy-type activities), yoga mats, baking supplies (for grounding techniques in baking activities), painting supplies (breath-work painting activities), and much more. If these needs were met, students, staff, and our community would be better prepared to cope with the stressors of everyday life. Students and adults would have adequate resources available to them and would learn that prioritizing mental wellness is a must. When everyone can better identify and regulate their emotions and mental well-being, deeper learning will occur," said Roberts.
