Jennifer Dear was nominated anonymously.
Dear stated, "As a special education school social worker, I am deeply committed to providing mental health access to families lacking resources or knowledge to support their students. My passion lies in empowering youth to navigate their mental health challenges, fostering resilience, and encouraging them to uplift others. By offering compassionate guidance and support, I strive to create a nurturing environment where all students can thrive and achieve their full potential."
She continued by saying, "As a special education school social worker in a poorly funded district, my needs are vast and often challenging. Currently working from a makeshift "office" in the school's laundry room, I aspire to create a more inviting and supportive space for my students. I would love to purchase interactive games that engage kids in safely exploring their emotions (Playing CBT, Behind the Anger, Breaking Barriers Down, 4 in a Row, CBT 123), along with books for Bibliotherapy and comfortable/flexible seating and/or table to create a relaxing and refreshing atmosphere."
"Additionally, a few carefully selected therapeutic toys would greatly enhance my play therapy interventions, helping students to express themselves and work through their challenges in a supportive environment. If my most pressing needs for my office were met, it would have a profound impact on the students, many of whom do not experience consistency, quality toys or materials, or clean spaces in their daily lives. Creating a therapeutic environment with high-quality materials would give them a sense of stability and value, countering the negative message that 'broken toys are for broken people.' Many students have shared that they do not have toys at home, making the availability of therapeutic toys in my office even more significant. This environment would enhance their engagement and willingness to explore their emotions and provide a safe and nurturing space that affirms their worth and potential," said Dear.
