"Evan is the teacher for whom every parent prays. Though a young teacher of only four years, she is highly respected by her colleagues. In addition to pouring her heart into her students each day, she mentors new teachers, provides support to homebound and evening school students, teaches ESY (Extended School Year), and coaches volleyball and the Unified Track Team, all while pursuing a Master's degree to serve her students and school community better," said the nominator.
"Evan teaches high-school students who have a 'Mild Intellectual' disability. However, there is nothing mild about her high expectations for her students. They know she loves them unconditionally; therefore, they work hard to reach their goals. At last year's graduation ceremony, Evan spoke about each of her seniors, sharing a funny tale or memory from the year. The audience laughed, but there wasn't a dry eye when she finished. When the school district started the inaugural Unified Track program last spring, Evan was asked to coach her school's team. She replied, 'Of course; those are my kids!' Not only did they compete, but they also led the district and were recognized by the School Board and at a football game honoring all the district's state-winning teams," said the nominator. "You've never seen prouder athletes!"
"After spending 37 years in education, I've witnessed hundreds of phenomenal, dedicated teachers. Evan Atkinson is truly a LifeChanger who will continue to impact students far into the future. I'm excited to see her receive the recognition she's earned. She'll give it right back to the students she is blessed to serve," said the nominator.
Evan is the definition of a "LifeChanger"! She changes the life of everyone she comes in contact with. Her unique and special ability to connect with her students and fellow teachers is unmatched.
Evan is amazing! She is passionate about her students academics, track and field, and their future. She has helped my son increase by three grade levels, excel in leadership skills, and gain employment. We love Evan!!!!

Evan is an amazing teacher in our SPED department. She takes any challenge head on and with such grace!! All the students LOVE her as well as her volleyball girls, which she coaches after school hours.

Evan Atkinson is a gem!! Since she has started here at SHS she has most certainly changed the lives of our special needs students. From developing our first ever Unified Track team to the Wave Star Snack Bar she has helped our special needs student feel connected and supported by our students and staff. These students are getting the opportunity to experience life as an SHS athlete and the engagement of soft skills that will aide them in their post hs lives. She even personally gave me a recommendation that helped me get into my cohort for my masters program. She truly changes lives!!

Miss Atkinson is changing lives every day at SHS! Not only is she changing lives within her own circle of Special Needs at our school but she recently worked with other teachers to create a research project for my leadership students to complete so they can better understand our "friends" that we see once a week. Miss Atkinson is working both as an advocate for her students and also to bring awareness to our typical learners! We are so fortunate she is a Green Wave!

Evan Atkinson is definitely a life changer. I have witnessed this myself with my own special needs children. She has helped my struggling high schooler to make better choices in academics and in the community. She has helped to return his love of school by offering incentives and encouraging all four of my children to participate in the Unified Track Program. Two of my children participated and two volunteered following in her example. She fosters goal setting in and out of the classroom and encourages her students to try new things. My child looks forward to seeing her every day which is a vast change from the past. I have also had the pleasure of watching and hearing about her coaching the volleyball team. It’s so special to know her athletes seek her out during lunch periods to say hi. She is not just a life changer, she is a GAME CHANGER. Summerville High is blessed to have her.
Evan has been so supportive and helpful to me in my special education teaching journey. It is hard to believe that she has "only" been teaching for four years as she is incredibly knowledgeable about her field. More importantly, she is passionate about helping others -- whether it is her students, other teachers, or parents, Evan always has time to help and does so with such kindness. Evan is a LIFE CHANGER for sure!
