Sophia Gray was nominated by her cultural arts manager, Lynnette Tessitore.
Ms. Gray encapsulates the best qualities of an educator and community champion. She is a stellar example of how a young woman can be compassionate, yet hold one accountable for their actions. She is kind, but very strong. Ms. Gray has a great passion for teaching, but understands that the best teachers should also be great learners. She goes well beyond her classroom responsibilities to understand and connect with her students on a human level that is often missed when working with youth.
Ms. Gray volunteers numerous hours both on campus and off campus to support both her students and her community. She has a leadership role in several district committees. She is a Faculty Advisory Committee Lead, a department Professional Learning Communities Lead, and a member of the Teacher Leadership Academy. Ms. Gray is also the M.E.CH.A Club Advisor and the Director of the KMMI Academy ( Montgomery High School Media Institute). She ensures that her students know their opinion matters and includes them throughout the decision-making process. She is a leader and role model that students can proudly emulate. The level of respect that she shows her students has had a great impact on many of their lives.
"In my experience, Sophia's students are more confident, take accountability, and demonstrate stronger leadership skills after having her as a teacher," said Tessitore. "I highly regard Sophia for her strong work ethic and community volunteerism."
Ms. Gray is currently the youngest individual appointed by the Chula Vista City Council to sit on the Cultural Arts Commission. Her responsibilities as a Commissioner include supporting up and coming artists to ensure they have paid opportunities, representing Chula Vista at a variety of arts and culture events throughout the region, as well as sitting on the Marketing Committee and Performing and Visual Arts Grant Commmittee. Ms. Gray, along with her fellow Commissioners, are committed to growing a strong creative industry where everyone has opportunity and access to diverse quality arts programming.
In her off time, she continues to teach and volunteer, creating short films at summer camps for students ages 6-12. The list of her community service is lengthy, and she makes a true positive difference in the lives of students and for the community at large. She is the utmost professional in all situations and adheres to high moral and ethical standards both on and off campus.

I am a former student of Ms.Gray and I believe she was the most influential educator I had. She’s a passionate teacher who inspired me to always work hard and do my best. She dedicated numerous hours after school by working with students as she managed numerous school clubs out of her passion for motivating students. By doing this she made a lot of memories for students and helped students develop a positive school atmosphere. I’m addition, She was more than an educator but an amazing mentor who was always there for students. Her kind soul defiantly impacted numerous students through her hard work and dedication. I had the pleasure of working with Ms Gray my senior year of High School back in 2015. She was in charge of a club at school and she was so dedicated to it. She made you feel comfortable working with her and spending time with her was enjoyable. You can tell shes doing what she loves for a living simply because of her attitude towards her job and her students.

With Ms. Gray I learned that I should always be myself. When I first moved to California freshman year she was the first teacher that I really connected with and was able to have conversations with. I appreciate her help in teaching me as much as she was able to when i got here in a short period of time to get me caught up with the rest of the class. No other teacher cared that much.

Ms. Gray was my former teacher just last year & in only one year of knowing her she definitely changed my life in a positive manner. Not only did she give me advice on how to be a leader in a classroom setting she gave me personal advice that I used out in the real world. I gained confidence & knowledge because of her & I’m grateful I was able to have built a relationship with her. She not only cares about a student academically she makes sure students have a good & healthy mindset. Sophia Gray is an amazing teacher endeared by her students but beyond that, she is truly one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever met. Sophia was a colleague of mine for several years at Hilltop High School. I always knew her to be a wonderful teacher highly regarded by students and staff. Last year, I had a time-sensitive media project that I needed help with. I was super stressed so I went to see Sophia and she literally saved me! She went out of her way to help me. That’s the kind of person she is—always giving of her time and talent. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award!
Ms. Gray took over the California Partnership Academy at our school this year called the Montgomery Media Institute. She has done an outstanding job continuing the 30 year old program and has made incredible inroads giving the Academy students some wonderful opportunities for internships, community project involvement and also the opportunity to be paid for projects. She works tirelessly before and after school to inspire these young people to achieve professional excellence. I am so proud to have her as the new Director of KMMI! Her students are really lucky to have her.
I have had the opportunity to work with Ms. Gray for the past 5 years. She is such a positive supportive teacher. I find her willingness to use her creative talents to support kids and her programs. On many times I have gone to Ms. Gray and asked her to create, build, and or design a project for the school. She always says yes and uses her creative side to make sure we have a quality project.
Her attention to students and supporting them in their work is excellent. She often is here late and putting in the time it take to give back. It has been a pleasure working with Ms. Gray and to watch her encourage her students in their growth.

Ms. Gray is a passionate, committed, and extraordinary teacher. She sets high expectations for each student and is always working tirelessly to inspire, and educate our future leaders. Ms. Gray is a vibrant, exciting teacher who truly cares about her students and their needs. She was a part of the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Hilltop High School for many years. Sophia was a great help with providing our students with knowledge of technology, in particular, Photoshop. She designed our current logo for the county of San Diego's annual student conference featuring a pineapple on top of a globe of the world, with the logo, "Discover a World of Success in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry". She has always been a team player who gives teaching her all.

Her class is really great! I am actually one of her students and her class is one of my favorites, she has showed us how to developed our creativity and how to use these aplications that are always in the computer but nobody uses or even use them. I enjoy this class and what we do, it's something that now in home I even do in free time.

I haven't known Ms. Gray for long, but I could already see how much she bonds with her students and they get along really well on a friend level. Her teaching with photoshop is easy to understand because she guides it through with us thoroughly, she's very kind and I believe that she is the nicest teacher that I have had so far. I always thought Mrs. Grey knew what she was doing and she is very good at Graphic design. Mrs. Grey is such a helpful and wonderful teacher. Ms. Gray is definitely my favorite teacher this school year. She moved to our school this year and in the few months I've gotten to know her, she has greatly influenced all of her students. I barely met Ms.Gray this year and after getting to know her she has really opened my eyes to a broader perspective of art. At first I was unsure if I should take digital art because I was unfamiliar with how to use photo shop but within a short period of time she has helped me a ton and I immediately got used to it. I have known Ms. Gray for the past 9 years as a colleague and friend. She is one of the most devoted, passionate and selfless educators I have met. I highly respect the amount of time she dedicates to her students, passion she has towards her teaching and the care/acknowledgment she provides for them. Ms.Gray goes above and beyond, she dedicates extra time and effort for their academic and personal growth through hands-on-learning activities and opportunities. She provides the proper tools for students to apply creativity that allows them to explore and discover beyond their expectations. The act of creating something different is what we call CHANGE which is unique and special. Having life is different than living life and Ms. Gray is a LIFE CHANGER, she has changed their lives in a positive manner.
Ms. Gray was a member of our district's Teacher Leadership Academy, which I facilitated last year. This was a new academy that teachers had to apply to participate in for an entire year. Ms. Gray took the time not only to apply, but to commit herself to attend our monthly meetings, participating in all teacher leadership activities, and supporting her colleague in and outside of the academy. She continues to seek out ways to add to her own learning in order to better support students and peers.

Ms. Gray taught my graphic design class during my senior year at Hilltop High School. I enrolled in her class just because I needed to fill my empty 5th period, but graphic design turned out to be the only class I really looked forward to every day. Ms. Gray was constantly encouraging me and my classmates to try our best and develop our artistic abilities. She provided us with resources to help us display our best work in contests and required everyone to create a portfolio and a resumé. Just knowing that a teacher cared so much for me and my future was enough to make me put forth my best effort, not only in her class but also in my other classes and extracurriculars, and I think the same can be said for her other students at Hilltop and her current students at Montgomery High School.
Miss Gray was my favorite mentor in high school! She went above and beyond to help me achieve my academic goals and even proofread all my applications for colleges.
She gave me the best advice and genuinely showed she cared for my success and happiness.
Now, I’m proud to call her my former mentor and dear friend.

Ms. Gray was one of my favorite teachers my senior year at Hilltop, she was one of the only teachers that made sure her students were succeeding and enjoying the classes, she was the best club advisor, speaking as former secretary of the MVPS club in 2016, member of the MEChA and HTV clubs she always made sure that we had access to different resources on campus and even kept up to date with conferences that we could attend to, she also helped with community service opportunities. Ms. Gray definitely showed me that nothing should ever stop your drive to do something and that anything that you set your mind to you can achieve. It is also important to mention that she helps her students however she can even just for SAT prep or college applications she was in a way a counselor for some of her students. I cannot think of a better candidate for this award Ms. Gray truly deserves it.

Me.Gray was honestly one of the best teachers I’ve had throughout high school she’s taught me so much life lessons and important goals in life and she’s helped my filmmaking improve so much by showing me how to add cool effects to videos and also camera angles for cinematics. Ms.Gray is very kind and helpful. She was there for times I needed ideas for films or had a problem going on. With all this said, I believe you should nominate Ms.Gray for life changer of the year!
I have known Sophia for two years now . When I came into Hilltop High as a new teacher Sophia was extremely nice and supportive . She made my first year teaching enjoyable . Although it was difficult , she was a constant reminder of why I chose my profession . Sophia is a person that I look up to . She is noble , kind , compassionate , dedicated , determined , driven , honest , but above all, someone to look up to . When I look at her and everything that she has accomplished , and by accomplishment I mean the great relationships she has established with her students , it motivates me as a teacher to want to establish relationships with my students . Nine years teaching and Sophia still gives herself 100 percent to her students . Nine years and she is still as driven and passionate as day one . It’s hard to find teachers like that and she is a role model , not only to students but to teachers as well . One year into teaching and I doubted myself , I doubted myself until I met her . Sophia Gray changed my life because she reminded me that great people still exist .

I had Ms. Gray as my multimedia teacher my senior year in 2013. Everyday I always dreaded school but I could not wait to get to my second period. I learned things not just about multimedia or how to edit videos, but as an individual also. Gray was not just a teacher to me, I also considered her someone I looked up to & felt comfortable talking to. She cares so much about her students studies along with their well being, not very many teachers can say they were as involved as she was. Ms. Gray is more than qualified for this award! Ms. Gray was constantly a very supportive teacher throughout my entire high school career. She made sure to let us students know any time she was proud of us and wasn't ever afraid to build a strong friendship with us. She made my last year at hilltop one to remember. I almost didn't want to leave just because of her!

Ms. Grey was my teacher my freshman year in 2014. Because of her I joined clubs such as MECHA & MVPS. Ever since then, I have learned so much from her. Durning the time i knew Ms. Gray i wasn’t one of her students. However i did participate in M.E.Ch. A. where stepping into her classroom every Tuesday brought a vibe of friendliness and involvement towards anyone and anything. Ms. Gray didn’t only reach out on a teacher to student level, but also as a friend to friend level. She made you feel secure and supported in any situation whether it’s advice or a favor. Her attitude is always positive and excited for a new day of learning & teaching.
My brother had Ms. Gray as a teacher in 2012 and when i told him that i was joining a club with Ms. Gray he assured me i was going to have fun and that it was a great decision. Up to this day my brother still tells me stories about the great things Ms. Gray did for her students. However , my brother isn’t the only one who has great stories but also students that just had her as well , they always retell her jokes and the way she brought joy and laughter to her class.
Not only have i heard this from her students but from several of her staff members as well. Many loved her and were upset to see their fellow leave Hilltop High.
Ms. Gray is definitely a teacher you keep in touch with after high school because of her way of being. She’s a role model to many and a life changer to others. Her ability to put a smile on peoples faces and support them the way she does only shows her involment with her students & that’s important.

Ms Gray is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met in my life. I knew if I was having a bad day I could go into her class and see her smile and know I was going to have a great day, her classes inspired me to be more creative and think outside of the box when it came to our projects and I appreciate her coming into my life and impacting me in such a positive way.

I was lucky enough to be one of Ms. Grays student last year at Hilltop High School. Although, I only had her for one year, I seen and heard of her doing so much for her students all four years I was at Hilltop. In one year I seen just how much she cares for her students not only inside the classroom but outside as well. Everyone knew Ms. Grays room was the place to get away from all the stress of school or just to go to to have someone to talk to. She made connections with each and every one of us. Everyday she greeted us individually checking up on us and our well being. Ms. Gray truly cares for her students and is not just there for a paycheck like some others. Her class was definitely that “one class” we all looked forward to during the day. Yes, her class material was a little difficult but only a phenomenal teacher like Ms. Gray could teach something like multimedia so well! On top of that she was in charge of many clubs on campus,and was always willing to stay after hours, off the clock to be our advisor. I personally had the opportunity to apart of two of the clubs she advised and when most of our facility on campus didn’t believe in us on reaching a goal, Ms. Gray was right there with us to prove them wrong. I will never forget the long lasting lessons Ms. Gray has taught me in the one year I had her, than most of my previous teachers combined. I wish there were more teachers like her in this world, she absolutely deserves this award.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Sophia Gray at Hilltop High School between the academic years of 2011-2015. Though she was not my teacher, I was able to work with her as my advisor for M.E.Ch.A., one of the largest student run clubs on campus. Through her, I was able to gain an understanding of what it means to run a club and events of over 500 people. I was also able to experience the compassion and care she held for her students, how she helped them succeed and helped them achieve their goals, and further their endeavors. I am currently a student at UC Davis, and I can say that I still reach out to Ms. Sophia Gray for her advice and guidance on a number of matters regarding work and school. She has impacted my life as a student in that I have become a harder worker and a more knowledgable student who is always striving to improve herself. This is my senior year of high school and I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work alongside Ms. Gray in my Televideo class. I admire that she has been working very hard to improve the news and KMMI program at our school and make it more entertaining. I have known Sofi “Sophia Gray,” for about 10 years now, and I consider her as one of my best friends. We met in our restaurant college job, when we were both working towards our degree. I remember how excited she was when she initially got hired as a teacher in the district. I remember thinking how young she was, but she was definitely ready for it! Sofi LOVES her job as a teacher, and she truly, truly cares for her students. She is always thinking of ways to make things more fun and engaging for her students. It is clear that she was meant to be working in education, and that her students very much admire her. Many times, Sofi has shared her stories about teaching, and it is so clear that she is great at what she does, and she has a lasting effect on her students. Sofi goes above and beyond to be there for her school and her district by staying late, being involved in many extra school activities, and being a leader within the Chula Vista Community. I believe Sofi would do anything for her students, and for her school. Sofi definitely deserves the Life Changer of the Year Award, as she has already changed many lives so early on in her career. I am so proud of of Sofi and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for her!

As a CTE Arts Media & Entertainment teacher, Ms. Gray at both Hilltop High and Montgomery High has built a strong Design,Visual and Media Arts Pathway at both sites. Students complete her classes with a rich set of skills in the visual arts. She has helped to develop the course outlines for the courses she teaches and recently her submission of the Multi-Media course to UC Doorways was approved to fulfill the “f” Arts requirement. She is truly an asset to the Sweetwater Union High School District.
Ms. Gray is the most kindest soul, she goes above and beyond for everything and everyone. She makes sure everyone has a opportunity to grow and learn as a student and as a person. I personally feel she is your best choice for being on the Cultural Arts Commission and for also representing Chula Vista.
i recently had my life documented by Ms Gray and her students. As a Holocaust survivor, it can be difficult speaking about my past but I know how important it is. Ms Gray was there every step of the way as my story was documented so that when I am no longer alive people cannot say it didn’t happen. Miss Gray definitely deserves this award. Writing this is the least I can do because I can never thank her enough for what she did.
Mrs.Gray and I have known each other since I was a student in high school. We built more than a student-teacher relationship when I became apart of the MECHA club she and I were apart of. From then till now, we’ve maintained a professional friendship and share advice about the field I’m current pursuing. Mrs.Gray is so very empathic and support to all of her students. Her genuinely interest in constructing bonds with her students is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
Sophia is a perfect candidate because she documents history with her students. They learn the latest and greatest in video technologies as well. Sophia has an eye for art and beauty. I know this because of a project she has been working on. She has had her students document time, history, and emotion. This spells the making of a Holocaust survivor. Yes, Chula Vista now has the story of a Holocaust survivor so that when it is no longer to hear her personally, the legacy lives on. I’m proud of Sophia. She changes lives with positivity, leaving legacies, and mentoring students to follow their dreams.
Ms. Gray was my Graphics Design teacher for a year. She was a great teacher, and it seems like she saw something in me, because she pushed me over and over again to become better and better. She really got me inspired to pursue art, as she showed me how talented I really was, and how I can improve as an artist. I went from someone who barely knew how to operate a computer, to someone who can design a whole movie poster from scratch in Photoshop due to Ms. Gray, and that was only in one year.
I believe that Ms. Gray has had a major influence towards her students because she demonstrates how to be a leader and taking chances. I was in her TV Film and Digital Media last year and she helped me and my colleagues to go past our comfort zone and to be confident infront of a camera. Afterwords, I develop a new passion towards film making and journalism and I want to thank Ms. Gray for helping us discover new passions, new talents, and making new memories everyday. She never fails to make someone smile, as she not only treats her students as colleagues, but rather as close friends. Even if Ms. Gray isn't in her class, she is always out in the world bringing a great sense of positivity to her community by helping out those in need and by sharing with the world kindness and character. That is why I believe Ms. Gray is a life changer ,whether you are colleagues, friends, students, etc., she will always be the go-to person for those in need of help or to brighten up your day!
Ms.Gray is definitely the most caring,generous and hard working teacher i have ever had. She will always say hi to everyone coming into her class. She made time to really create a bond with each of her students and cared how their life was going. I had thee amazing opportunity to be one of her students and her class was the place to be during the whole school day. She always tried to make the class laugh and she was thee realest teacher you can ever have. Ms.Gray always had much on her plate but at the end of it all, she always finished her tasks. Any student Ms.Gray had a bond with will say that she does leave a impact on our lives and we love her to death.
Ms.Gray is a wonderful and very dedicated teacher. I had Ms.Gray as a teacher for 2 years and in those 2 years she kept every student motivated and wanting to go to school. She knew how to make sure her students had everything they needed to learn and succeed. She never said no to any of her students ideas but worked with them. She truely is life changer in many lives.

Ms. Gray helped foster my interest in Computer Science, leading to my current career as a Software Engineer. She also guided me through my first leadership role as president of my school's M.E.Ch.A. Chapter. She was by far the most influential teacher I've had. Without her influence I don't know where I would be.
I was Ms. Gray’s student for two consecutive years in high school, and I learned everything I know about graphic design and video production because of her. She inspired me to join the student media program at the University of Utah, where I am attending now. She is someone I always try to see when I visit home because I know that she has always and will always care to hear of my accomplishments. She is a wonderful teacher and an inspiring person all-around.
Sophia Gray is one of the most unique and effective teachers I have known in a life long of teaching. She is smart, innovative and compassionate in the classroom as well as in the community. Students and colleagues respond to her gentle, thoughtful, but strong leadership and mentoring. I have had the privilege to work with her on several projects and can consider her trusted friend. Ms.Gray possesses a rare quality to wear many hats, and she wears them all well. Sophia is an extremely thoughtful, caring and deeply talented artistic person and I can think of no other more deserving of such laurels offered in the community of Chula Vista.

I believe that Sophia Gray would be the perfect recipient for the LifeChanger of the year award. She has truly helped Montgomery high with you devotion to the KMMI Academy. She has changed the program in a positive way. She has allowed the the student to branch out and connect more with the program more then they ever have before. She has also allowed us students to see how the program can help us after high school and all the opportunities it upholds for us.
Ms.Gray has always been an individual who I am able to look up to. Throughout high school she was always there to show me great leadership abilities and to guide me when I felt lost. Even after graduating high school she continues to be there for me whenever I need her. She is always there for her students when they need someone to talk to. Ms.Gray is truly an inspiration to so many !
She have not only been a great teacher but also such an great role model she always been there for when anyone needs her it can just be for a laugh or just to talk to. I appreciate her so much and everything she has done for me.
Ms.Gray is a very kind hearted person and does a great job of connecting with her students on a personal level which helps improve their skills in the classroom. She also does a great job of taking the time to make sure her students learn the material well. Ms.Gray is always helping out with her community by wanting the best for others and loves to people succeed. She always has a positive attitude no matter what the situation is and always there for people regardless of what they have done to her and that has to be her strongest traits as a person.
Sophia was my high school teacher. She was always supportive and positive throughout my senior year and my life in general. Not one day went by that she didn’t make sure to see how not only I but everyone in each of her classes was doing. She always puts others ahead of herself and I’m so grateful to have met someone like Ms.Gray. She has always pushed students to do their best in everything they do. Ms. Gray is an outstanding teacher and young woman but most importantly a friend. She made her students feel welcome and is constantly going out of her way to find ways for them to be involved and feel included. Unlike other teachers she’s interactive and shows that she genuinely cares, she has a big heart & I believe she deserves this award. She is qualified and loved by almost everyone she meets, from students, parents, staff.
