Music that Describes Kristen

Kristen Cowen was nominated by her friend, Brandon Guerrero.

"I never imagined that my life would be how it is today. I didn't imagine I would have to explain to my family, friends, co-workers, and students that every day, I choose joy! When we lost our sweet angel Rylen at 13 months old to a battle with bacterial meningitis in 2017, my life forever changed. Rylen became my hero as he was able to save five lives through organ donation, and this allowed me to start a foundation that, to this day, inspires and encourages every individual to become an organ donor. I believe this is life-changing," said Cowen.

"Losing our Rylen could easily end my own personal road, as no mother should have to bury their child. I often hear, 'I don't know how you do it,' or 'I don't know what I would do,' but I decided that Rylen would want me to keep living life, keep his legacy alive, and help others through giving back. After starting a foundation in Rylen's name, The Smilin' Rylen Foundation hosts an annual walk to raise funds to give back to four beneficiaries to help families in crisis. To date, we've been able to give back over $269,000. My heart is forever changed as I continue to say Rylen's name daily, sharing his story with all I encounter, which brings joy to my heart. That is what brings a smile to my face. I'm a proud angel mom, and I'm glad I have the opportunity to help continue his legacy," said Cowen.

"Even though this is a personal story, I hope that as I do these acts of kindness and live my life giving back, I model to my students in my class and inspire them that they too can do anything they want and overcome challenges. I hope they will think of my Rylen often and fully understand how I impact and help our community. My position is one of the hardest ever, and no one would ever want to be in it. Still, I have exemplified taking ashes and turning them into beauty."

"I hope that I continue to inspire and impact the lives of all that I encounter, and I pray that just at least one might decide to become an organ donor because of the gracious gifts Rylen gave and the beautiful, selfless act we made for Rylen as his parents. I know firsthand that I truly have felt healing in the whole process as I see the joy in Rylen's recipients, and I will continue to bring joy as I will forever share Rylen's story wherever I go," said Cowen.
