Janelle Jaquish was nominated by two anonymous students.
On their first days at the north campus of Arrowhead Union High School, both students faced challenges and uncertainties. One student, previously struggling with math, found solace in a familiar face and an encouraging teacher. The other, navigating a new environment, discovered a supportive ally who transformed their high school experience.
When entering the Advanced Math and Statistics class, the first student encountered a warm and inviting atmosphere decorated with flags made from T-shirts. Initially hesitant, they found comfort in approaching Mrs. Jaquish for help whenever needed. Over time, they became more confident and chatty, often engaging in conversations that brightened their day.
Reflecting on this relationship, the first student shared, "Hey, Mrs. Jaquish! Can I ask you a huge favor?" To their relief, Mrs. Jaquish readily agreed to write a recommendation letter for their college applications, lifting a weight off their shoulders. This supportive connection significantly impacted their confidence and school life.
Meanwhile, the second student, struggling with math throughout high school, felt overwhelmed by quizzes, tests, and the ongoing pace of coursework. Approaching senior year, they decided to move to a more manageable math level. Returning to a familiar teacher, Mrs. Jaquish, who had previously taught them and helped them excel, brought reassurance and comfort.
In their new math class, the second student found renewed confidence. They no longer required a tutor, relying on Mrs. Jaquish's patient guidance during class. Reflecting on this transformation, they realized, "Thanks to the help of Mrs. Jaquish, I no longer need a tutor." Mrs. Jaquish's teaching approach and accessibility changed their perspective on math, making them feel capable and open to seeking help.
Both students experienced a profound shift in their academic journeys due to Mrs. Jaquish's support and encouragement. Her impact extended beyond teaching math; she created a safe space where students felt empowered to ask questions, seek guidance, and ultimately thrive in their studies.
