Educators can leave an irreplaceable mark on our lives, profoundly shaping our journey. For one student at Arrowhead High School, this figure was Ms. Kerr, their sophomore-year biology teacher. Despite being hired during the second week of the first semester, Ms. Kerr's impact was immediate, allowing the student to embark on a journey of learning self-advocacy—forever shifting their life.

Growing up with ADHD and anxiety created the fear of asking for help and self-advocacy. The student found themselves lying low, barely getting by. Recognizing the need for change, they emailed Ms. Kerr, seeking assistance and avoiding face-to-face confrontation. The student recalled feeling relieved upon receiving Kerr's response: "Come in at lunch."

Ms. Kerr's welcoming demeanor put the student at ease during their meeting. Every question asked was met with encouragement, allowing the student to feel free to be themselves. Throughout the school year, Ms. Kerr worked diligently to accommodate the student's needs.

Ms. Kerr nurtured, checked on, and cared for the student like they were her own. Although she didn't speak much about her personal life, she mentioned having two kids and a husband who worked in education as a principal. To the student, Ms. Kerr was a loving mom and a beacon of light to everyone around her.

Despite the student's initial self-doubt in biology, Ms. Kerr always believed in their potential. Through her encouragement and support, the student unlocked the importance of believing in themselves and developing the confidence to pursue help, even when uncomfortable.

Reflecting on their journey, the student felt immense gratitude for Ms. Kerr's impact. Her dedication, passion, and unwavering support shaped the student's academic career and instilled a lifelong lesson in self-advocacy.

Ms. Kerr was more than just a biology teacher—she was a mentor, a friend, and a life coach. Through her guidance, the student learned biology and the invaluable life lesson of self-advocacy. Ms. Kerr was a transformative influence, forever switching on a light within the student. Everyone needs a Ms. Kerr, and the student was forever thankful to have her in their life.
