Middle school is a challenging time for everyone, and the transition to sixth grade was particularly tough for Mrs. O'Connor's nominator. However, Mrs. O'Connor was a beacon of support, making the student's time at Templeton Middle School more manageable. As their math intervention teacher from sixth to eighth grade, she noticed her nominator's struggles with math and the emotional toll it was taking. She didn't just address hurtful comments from peers but also worked to build her nominator's confidence, reassuring them that learning at their own pace was a sign of intelligence, not a deficit.
The student found solace in Mrs. O'Connor's classroom, where engaging in math activities fostered a judgment-free learning environment. Initially hesitant to ask questions, they found Mrs. O'Connor approachable, encouraging them to seek clarification without fear of judgment. Even during the challenges of the pandemic, Mrs. O'Connor maintained support, organizing virtual meetings and personally connecting with students.
Returning from online schooling in eighth grade, the student struggled with algebra but quickly improved under Mrs. O'Connor's guidance. Her nomination for a Principal Pen Award, a testament to their hard work, showcased her investment in their success. Grateful for Mrs. O'Connor's kindness, dedication, and passion for teaching, the student acknowledged her profound impact on their academic journey.
