The first impression was immediate and profound when the nominator met Mrs. Westrick, their first-grade teacher. Mrs. Westrick's grace, warmth, and beauty left a lasting impact on the nominator.

"I wanted to look like her when I grew up," the student recalled. As a first grader, the student was captivated by Mrs. Westrick's stories, pictures, and math lessons.

Throughout the first grade year, the nominator witnessed firsthand Mrs. Westrick's positive influence on students, including themselves. Described as patient, kind, and enthusiastic, Mrs. Westrick made every student feel valued and supported. The nominator remembered the daily warmth and kindness Mrs. Westrick exuded, greeting the class with a smile at the door. Mrs. Westrick's passion for teaching and love for her students was evident in every lesson, making learning exciting and engaging through adventures and creative projects.

The student's classroom experience extended beyond academics; it facilitated friendships that endure to this day.

"I met some of my best friends in that classroom," the student noted gratefully.

Entering Merton Elementary School each morning brought joy to the student's face, knowing Mrs. Westrick was there. During moments of sadness or worry, Mrs. Westrick's hugs and high-fives were reassuring, making the student feel capable of anything. The student viewed Mrs. Westrick as a superhero teacher, always ready to save the day with kindness and encouragement.

After a challenging Christmas break, where parental disagreements weighed heavily on the student's mind, Mrs. Westrick said, "Believe in what you want to believe." Those words became a guiding principle for the student, empowering them to value their opinions and feelings. This newfound confidence led this student to participate in the Junior States of America (JSA), where they could voice their thoughts on worldly matters.

Reflecting on Mrs. Westrick's impact, this student realized the profound life lessons imparted by their teacher. Mrs. Westrick's unwavering belief in the student's potential instilled the importance of perseverance and strength. Despite personal challenges, Mrs. Westrick maintained an upbeat demeanor, always welcoming her students with a smile and open arms.

In expressing gratitude to Mrs. Westrick, the student acknowledged her transformative role in shaping their character. Beyond academics, Mrs. Westrick taught empathy, love, and perseverance—essential life skills that continue to guide the student into adulthood.
