Kelly Hassler was nominated by Hannah Mueller, a student.

Amid the bustling halls and classrooms of Arrowhead High School, where each student navigates their unique challenges, one individual's story stands out—a narrative of resilience, support, and transformative impact. Within this environment, the nominator, a student grappling with dyslexia and the aftermath of troubling experiences, found solace and empowerment through the unwavering support of Mrs. Hassler, her dedicated case manager. The student's journey at Arrowhead High School embodies the profound influence a caring and empathetic educator can have on a student's life, offering hope and a sense of belonging amidst personal turmoil. The following is a story of how one teacher's compassion and advocacy transformed a student's educational experience and restored her faith in finding a supportive community.

"I'm looking at the clock and SMARTboard—they're both moving extremely fast. I'm worrying about what happened at lunch; I only think to run out of the room," the student recalled.

When the teacher announced it was time to work, the student approached him calmly but urgently. "I need to go," they stated before hurrying down the north campus hallway towards the Learning Center.
The student burst into the quiet atmosphere of the Learning Center, their mind racing with the need to escape her distress. Seeking out Mrs. Hassler, their case manager for dyslexia, the student conveyed their turmoil. "Can we please talk," they pleaded.

Mrs. Hassler, who had always greeted the student with a bright smile, recognized the panic on her face and swiftly led her to a side room. As the student poured out their jumbled thoughts and experiences, Ms. Hassler listened attentively.

After a brief silence, Mrs. Hassler began typing and asking the student for details while calming them down. The student revealed the challenges she had faced before coming to Arrowhead High School, where she had experienced bullying and struggled to find a supportive environment.
Reflecting on her journey, the student realized Mrs. Hassler's profound impact on her life.

"The first two years of high school were awful. That all changed when the sweet, loving, caring, and nurturing Mrs. Hassler met me," the student recounted.

Mrs. Hassler's support made the student feel valued and understood as if they were more than just a problem to be dealt with.

"She was like a mother to me when I had panic attacks," the student explained.

Mrs. Hassler's advocacy and problem-solving gave the student hope for a better school experience where they could be seen and heard as an individual.
