Lisa Gilbert was nominated by Marlon Johnson, a member of the community.

"I am honored to nominate Lisa Gilbert for the prestigious LifeChanger of the Year award. She embodies the true spirit of a dedicated and passionate teacher, making an indelible impact on the lives of her students and the education community at large," said Johnson.

Ms. Gilbert's teaching philosophy, rooted in the belief that education is the key to success, aligns seamlessly with the principles of Abraham Maslow's concept of Self-Actualization. Teaching is her true calling, bringing her unparalleled happiness and fulfillment. Her goal extends beyond imparting academic knowledge; she aspires to be a role model, guiding students across all facets of their lives.

"What sets her apart is her unwavering commitment to every student's success. Having witnessed students left behind in her own elementary school days, she has vowed never to give up on any student. Lisa establishes strong partnerships with students and their parents, fostering a supportive environment where every child feels valued and understood," stated Johnson.

Her approach to education emphasizes instilling confidence in her students. She believes that before children can succeed outside of school, they must first find success within its walls. Her classroom is not just a space for memorizing facts; it is a dynamic environment where students learn problem-solving skills and the ability to seek information independently.

"Her commitment to fostering critical and literal thinkers for the 'Real World' is commendable. Her dedication goes beyond her role as a teacher; she considers the broader aspects, including her instructional methods, the classroom environment, and the individual roles of each student. Lisa's vision extends to promoting change on a district-wide scale, envisioning professional development seminars and walkthroughs to elevate the educational experience for all," stated Johnson.

She brings about positive change through her innovative ideas and commitment to raising students' metacognition and self-awareness. She is an exceptional teacher and a LifeChanger who inspires students to realize their full potential and fellow educators to enhance their teaching strategies.

"Ms. Gilbert's passion, dedication, and transformative approach to education make her an exemplary candidate for the LifeChanger of the Year award. Her impact reaches far beyond the confines of her classroom, leaving an indelible mark on the future of education," said Johnson.

Ms. Gilbert is truly the GOAT! I have no idea how she has quite literally made each student feel so loved and accepted and supported in their learning as her students but she has done just that! I remember being her student some 20+ years ago and being slightly jealous of others bc I didn’t understand just how she could make everybody feel the same [so silly!]. Nonetheless, she was definitely one of the more challenging teachers and for that I’m grateful as it had molded me to be equipped for my years of schooling to come! She also took extra special care to make sure I got to and from school ok, back in the day it was ok to have a ride from your teacher sometimes. I love her so much to this day!! Again, how on earth has she stayed connected with so many of us all these years later!? She deserves her flowers!

Ms Gilbert has been such an amazing mentor/influencer in my life for the past almost 23 years. From tutoring when I was in her class in fourth grade, to her being there for important adult milestones, words can’t express how much of a life changer she has been in my life. Teaching isn’t just in the classroom for her. She lets her students know that she will always be there if you need her. She deserves this award.

Ms. Gilbert has been the epitome of what a great teacher is since I stepped foot in her classroom over 20 years ago. Her goal has always been to make sure her students understand why it is so important to listen, learn and apply in and outside of the classroom. Myself and my parents are so lucky to have had the “Ms. G” experience. Having a teacher who actually cares about your education, well being and her students is the reason why myself and others still remain life long friends to this day.

Ms. Gilbert has left a lasting impression in my head as well as on my heart. She will never be forgotten. When I needed a bandage and a hug from falling on the playground she was there. If I needed tough love and to hear the truth.... I received it from her. I loved that fact that her door was and is always open. When I didn't have enough money for a field trip to the zoo... she was my personal banker, my skirt was stained from an accident.... she took off her jacket and covered me up and when I just needed a smile and a friendly face.... she was there. I think what I remember most about her is her wit in the classroom and how she made all the lessons come to life. I still use some of her reading strategies to this day whenever I need help with an assignment. She is an amazing human being and teacher. This award has he name written all over it and it is long over due. My life has surely been changed and impacted for the better by Lisa Ann Gilbert.

Ms. Gilbert has been a teacher and mentor in my life for many years now. For myself and many others, she has always gone above and beyond when it comes to education. Anyone can teach a subject matter or help you learn some information from a textbook, but not many will really go beyond whatever the subject may be and teach you lessons that you can take with you in life. Ms. Gilbert is so selfless and puts her all into caring for her students. Her passion for education and for her students personal growth shows even beyond her classroom. She is someone who will have your back for life and will continue to help you grow. She makes you want to be successful. I can’t think of a more deserving person for this award.

Over 20 years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Gilbert. I was a 4th grader in New Orleans but unfortunately not assigned to her main class. That didn’t stop Ms. Gilbert from being a mentor and building a relationship with my mom to be sure I was supported. I was still adjusting to the new school and can remember how she made me feel like I belonged and was capable of doing my best no matter the environment. We’re still connected to this day and I wish every child can experience the love Ms. Gilbert has shown!
