Music that Describes Chadia
Chadia Shakir-Saleem was nominated by her spouse, Jamaal Saleem.
“When you learn, teach. When you get, give," - Maya Angelou
"It's with great honor that I nominate my wife, Mrs. Chadia Shakir-Saleem, for the LifeChanger of the Year Award because she has dedicated over 24 years to teaching young scholars with conviction, passion, and dedication," said Saleem.
"Since the first day she stepped foot into her teaching career, she has prioritized giving 100 percent in ensuring her students receive the best education. She has worked and continues to work tirelessly to make sure she provides her students with the skills and strategies needed to be successful and lifelong learners," said Saleem.
"My wife not only teaches from the heart, but she also gives from the heart. Many times, without a second thought, she spends her time and money purchasing items like motivational stickers, motivational pencils, snacks, books, or whatever is needed to motivate her students. She motivates her students and inspires them to love learning by actively engaging them in lessons and meeting them where they are. Mrs. Saleem fosters a positive learning environment for her students. My wife truly demonstrates genuine caring and respect for her students," said Saleem.
"Furthermore, she collaborates with colleagues in and outside of school, discussing strategies to help all students achieve their highest potential. She's always working diligently to improve her craft. To add, my wife not only has an impact on her students' lives but also has made an impact as a cooperating teacher to many interns during her teaching career. Two of her interns received Kean University's Outstanding Intern Award under her leadership. Mrs. Saleem is also a powerful asset in her school. For instance, she leads the New Jersey Tiered Systems of Support (NJTSS) program and is part of her School's Leadership Team. She also serves as an instructional leader in the school and shares her expertise with other teachers. Mrs. Saleem is a highly knowledgeable practitioner who understands that the core of interventions relies on personal connections," said Saleem.
"In her current role as a Reading Interventionist, she supports students in grades K-5 who need instructional support. These students struggle with reading and require additional support. My wife draws from various strategies to remediate learning gaps for her students. I remember my wife sharing that one of her students was frustrated and blurted out, 'I can't read!' My wife had to hold back her tears, and she immediately responded, 'Don't say I can't. Say I can!' She kept instilling an 'I can attitude' as she does with all of her students; weeks later, this same student read her first story. Not only was my wife's heart filled with joy, but she exclaimed, 'If you could have seen the smile on the student's face, it was priceless.' Mrs. Saleem helps her students build not only their foundational skills but also their confidence as readers. With Mrs. Saleem's support and unwavering love for her students, they have all made significant progress. My wife often shares with our family the successes of her students, which also pushes and motivates our two daughters to excel in school. With that said, I believe my wife is the perfect candidate for this nomination," said Saleem.
"She has also dedicated her time to teaching in after-school programs, participating in numerous committees and programs inside and outside of the school to support her students, other children, and community members. My wife has also tutored students voluntarily during the summer. She continues to provide opportunities to set students up for success. To add, she not only has a good rapport with her students and teachers, but she also has a good rapport with the parents. She provides them with strategies and resources to help their child at home. This, in turn, provides another layer for students to be successful," said Saleem.
"Mrs. Saleem is changing lives and impacting students' minds every day! She's consistently instilling in her students the love of learning," said Saleem. "My wife is changing the trajectory of her struggling readers, 'I can't to I can!' Mrs. Saleem also goes above and beyond her call of duty. She's also committed to giving back to the community."
Below is a list of where Mrs. Saleem volunteers in the community:
- Soup Kitchens
- Food Banks
- Dr. Martin Luther King's Day of Service
- Hope for Health and Hygiene (An organization her daughter started) gives hygienic products to underserved communities
- Chairperson of a Youth Committee
"Lastly, Mrs. Saleem is respectful, a role model to all, a team player, compassionate, caring, and most importantly, an amazing educator and human being who loves what she does, and it shows through her students' achievements," said Saleem. "I will end with this with a quote from Barack Obama that embodies Mrs. Saleem's everyday practices. 'A change is brought about because ordinary people do extraordinary things.'"

I have been working with Mrs. Saleem this past school year as School Counselor, and I see and know she has been demonstrating her passion, great skills and expertise as an Interventionist in our school. She works diligently each day meeting with students and assisting them with their academic struggles in reading. Her presence and consistency in working with students helps them to develop stronger educational growth. I recently began working with Mrs. Saleem on the NJTSS (New Jersey Tier Systems of Support) Team at our school, and she took the time to review and show me what the data is used for. The meeting allowed me to have better comprehension of the process as a whole. Lastly, Mrs. Saleem has a wonderful personality and she always willing to lend a hand in anyway she can assist with the students and staff. She is definitely worth of this nominated honor!
I agree 100 percent with Chadia Saleem’s husband and the other comments. I too had a wonderful experience working with her, on the 2nd Grade Team, many years ago at Barlow school. Mrs. Saleem was an amazing mentor without even giving the official assignment. It is in her DNA to help anyone in need. Mrs. Saleem is easy to work with and she loved to see her fellow teachers and students thrive. Mrs. Saleem is a great asset to the Plainflied school district and her community. Lastly, she is family oriented who turned out to be a good friend! It’s my honor and pleasure to leave this comment!

We have collaborated often on utilizing effective instructional practices and basic literacy techniques to help support students in their development in reading. I met Mrs. Saleem when I first came to Cedarbrook 10 years ago. She was a colleague first and then her daughter became a student. To teach a colleague's child gives a window into to a colleague you don't always get. I saw her in a new light because a child is an extension of the family. Her daughter represented her family well. She went on to endeavors that only a supportive family would cultivate such as being part of a local orator club, attending top tier universities, receiving a prestigious Obama scholarship, creating a non profit, and attending graduate school. As a colleague she is constantly pulling children to support them to become readers. I never pass her room when she is not sitting with a group of students at her table or one on one breaking down words with them to emerge as more confident readers. She also leads our school wide Amira digital reading program. It is a digital tool that models good reading and gives students the opportunity to read aloud to the computer first before the class as a whole. She monitors progress and creates school-wide challenges with rewards to encourage staff and students alike to utilize the program in a meaningful way. She has a nurturing demeanor while pushing both our students and her daughters to excellence.
I love all of this! We are so proud of you and thank you for loving our children and families. We all need this kind of love.
Loving, caring, and dedicated are just a few words that come to mind when thinking of Ms. Chadia Saleem. Her commitment to her students and the guidance and support she provides our school community is priceless and very much appreciated. She is a true community builder and servant for the people.
Mrs. Saleem is the epitome of an extraordinary educator who has made life better for students and her community. Through her actions of dedication towards helping her students achieve academic excellence, she has instilled in them that their greater purpose is to thrive to do their best so that they can contribute their gifts and talents to help those that are vulnerable. Her ability to get the best out of her students will definitely be reflected in the future good for the sustainability of mankind. Her community is better because of her selfless servitude, and her kindness of giving to her family, students, and community is a gift to the world. Mrs. Saleem is truly a bright star of love that the world needs now and forever and is worthy of this auspicious honor of leadership.
Hello All!
I am pleased to share a few thoughts about Mrs. Chadia Saleem, educator extraordinaire! She is super passionate about teaching children to read. Literacy, as we know is a fundamental building block in developing communication skills within the students while they build both written and oral vocabulary. Mrs. Saleem diligently seeks to elevate all of her students. Mrs. Saleem deserves all the accolades for a job well done. She is truly a life changer, deserving this award.
As a clinical instructor in the College of Education at Kean University, I served as the liaison for the college's partnership with the Plainfield Public Schools. In that role, I was lucky enough to work with Mrs. Saleem for six semesters, during which she served as a cooperating teacher for three of my clinical interns. Mrs. Saleem was a model teacher who trained my interns in essential skills such as classroom management, differentiation of instruction, questioning, assessment, and other facets of sound pedagogy. One of her clinical interns actually received the Kean University Distinguished Clinical Intern award, and all three of them went on to be successful in the teaching profession. They owe their success to Mrs. Saleem and the hard work she put in to train them and model for them each and every day. I can't say enough about Mrs. Saleem's commitment to her students, her passion for education, and her selflessness in always being willing to work with clinical interns. If anyone deserves the Life Changer of the Year Award, it is Mrs. Saleem!

I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Saleem during the pandemic. It was a very hard way of teaching, but Mrs. Saleem made it interesting and a fun way for the students to learn and they showed up on her zoom classroom every day, on time. She is very passionate about her job and very caring to her students. We became friends over that time and I'm proud to call her friend. She is definitely worthy of this award.
Mrs. Saleem is an inspiration to so many. Not only do her students and families feel supported and loved by her, so do her colleagues. It has been my honor to learn from her, as she’s shared her experience with me. Thank you, Mrs. Saleem.
I consider Mrs. Saleem an awesome colleague to work with. I have worked with her for several years, in the same school. I have had the opportunity to work with her as Reading Interventionist. I have observed first-hand that her priority, when working with students, is that she is dedicated to see her students show growth within their literacy skills. Furthermore, she is a highly experienced teacher, who applies the most effective resources to use with her students struggling with reading and comprehension skills. Most importantly she is a highly qualified educator who cares 100% about her students as a person, as well as a learner. I admire the way she encourages her students, consistently letting them know they are smart!

Chadia Saleem Is an amazing teacher and an awesome person. It's been an honor to work with you. I met her almost 30 years ago and was excited when she started working for our district. She's full of life and always understanding and positive. I am so happy and proud of you. No one deserves this award more then you.
From the moment I met Mrs. Saleem I knew she was a lifelong teacher. She knows how to teach the students and meet them where they are and then accelerate them to be where they need to be. She is a wonderful colleague and is always willing to help. I am lucky to know her and my students and all of the students are better off for knowing her.
I have worked with Chadia Saleem for many years now and have witnessed first hand her unique ability to reach even the most challenging students. As a kindergarten and first grade teacher, I always looked to Mrs. Saleem to support my struggling students and she has NEVER fallen short. Her rapport with the teachers AND students here at Cedarbrook K-8 Center is bar none.
In my current capacity serving as School Social Worker, Mrs. Saleem and I work hand in hand supporting both student and teachers in developing intervention strategies for struggling students. Mrs. Saleem is organized, thorough, and diligent in her efforts to provide a quality education to our students. I truly do not know what we would do without her. She is an integral part of our community here at Cedarbrook and I a proud to say that she has certainly earned my vote for "Life Changer of the Year."
Chadia Saleem is one of those teachers any student would be fortunate to have in their lives. She truly cares and is committed to make a difference in the lives of all the children under her care. Mrs. Saleem sees each one of her students as a young person with worth and validates their existence through her interactions with them. She works hard to come up with diverse and unique ideas that would be effective in pushing students to meet and overcome their academic challenges. But beyond that, Mrs. Saleem knows that her students' identities are not solely defined by their academic difficulties. She nurtures, not just the mind, but also the character of her students. She has yet to meet a child who cannot succeed.
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Thank you Mr. Jamaal Saleem fir nominating your wife, my colleague-friend and mentor, Mrs. Chadia Shakir-Saleem, for the LifeChanger of the Year Award because she has helped me develop my craft over the past 19 years. Mrs. Saleem's level of commitment, passion, dedication, and expertise was apparent to me the first day I was introduced to her (new hire Kindergarten teacher) by our administrator. I walked into her 2nd grade classroom...and WOW! Talk about a literacy rich environment (THE HEART OF THE CLASSROOM- THE CLASSROOM LIBRARY WAS RICH WITH A MULTITUDE OF GENRES AND LEVELED BOOKS FOR SCHOLARS INDEPENDENT READING LEVELS) filled with busy little scholars working their brains to the limit! Thereafter, I knew without a doubt, I needed to watch and learn from Mrs. Saleem because MRS. SALEEM creates scholars. I am so happy, I stayed focused and committed to the teaching and learning process with Mrs. Saleem because over the years-and-to-date she's still there for me collaborating and discussing data during and after school hours.
"Life's most persistent and urgent question: What are you doing for others?"
"Mrs. Saleem is without question changing my life and continuously empowering scholars to know...YES, I CAN!!!"
"Mrs. Chadia Shakir-Saleem, for the LifeChanger of the Year Award," said Ms. Anderson.

It has been my honor to work with Mrs. Saleem. She resonates with genuine warmth and compassion, and leaves a lasting impression on those she meets. Her unwavering belief in her students' potential serves as a powerful motivator for their personal and academic growth. Her encouragement instills a sense of confidence, inspiring them to strive for improvement and excellence.

This was beautifully written and describes Mrs. Saleem perfectly. My desk is near her office, I watch and see her hard work and dedication on a daily basis. I admire her work ethic and I'm proud to have her as a colleague. I am not ashamed to say that I have stolen some of her reading tips that she uses to teach her students to use at home on my grandchildren. Please select this wonderful lady as "Life Changer of the Year". She is truly deserving of this title and more.
Mrs. Saleem is an amazing woman and educator. I met Mrs. Saleem when I was a TA and when I moved into my current role as a teacher she has taught me so many amazing things when it comes to teaching ELA. ELA was my weakest subject to teach, but through Mrs. Saleem guidance and her perseverance I have learned a lot. She is very deserving of this award and I think she is very deserving of this honor.
Jamaal has so eloquently put not only his wife's accomplishments but who she is at the core. Over our 40 years of friendship, Chadia has always been an inspiration and joy to everyone who has had the pleasure of being in her company. I'm certain her students walk away believing they matter, that they can accomplish anything, and that there's someone in their lives that truly loves them, and isn't that what we all need to not only survive but to thrive. I couldn't be more in awe of my sister & friend.
This educator is an amazing woman!!!! She reached out to me over this summer and offered to tutor not one but both my boys so that they would not fall behind in the upcoming school year. She did not ask for any payment .whatsoever and she tutored twice per week. I get emotional every time I think about it because she didn't know me she sought me out to offer to do this because she saw the need she continues to keep in touch with my family how can you not love a person like this who cares so much. Our children absolutely need more Educators like this Mrs Saleem!!!!
