Position: SEL Interventionist
School: Chichester Central School
School District: School Administrative Unit #53
City, State: Chichester , NH
Karen Johnson was nominated by her colleague, Jessica Wilson.
"Karen has been a part of SAU 53 for many years and finds the toughest kids are the best. Karen connects with the students who have difficulty finding their space within the traditional setting. She helps them find their voice and path and supports their families along the way," said Wilson.
"Karen came to Chichester last year after retiring from the middle school Bridge program for SAU 53 - an alternative school setting within our SAU for students with behavioral needs that a traditional school setting could not meet. Once I heard she was retiring, I knew I had to talk her into coming to work with us here at Chichester Central School as an SEL Interventionst. Karen has provided light in the darkness for many of our students, staff, and Chichester families. Karen has used her social work background to make families feel at ease and offered resources that we can provide to families far beyond the walls of the school community. Karen spreads kindness, positive vibes (as she always says), and a genuine love for those around her. She truly believes in students; sometimes, they need to know how loved they are to become their best selves," said Wilson.
"Last spring was a particularly trying time for me in my personal life...Karen bravely sat me down and told me it was okay to step away and to take time for myself. She encouraged me to take time to heal because I wouldn't be much help to the students and staff of our community if I wasn't caring for myself. It takes guts to sit your boss down and tell her like it is. Karen never hesitates with difficult conversations- always handling herself with grace and compassion for others. I could go on and on about stories of Karen's impact on students and adults. She's truly a one-in-a-million type of person, and if you're lucky to meet her in your lifetime, you're sure to feel her lasting positive impact," said Wilson.
