Music that Describes Katie

Katie Dudley was nominated by a colleague, Julie Ahern.

"Katie is one of the most dedicated, hard-working individuals I know. We began teaching at our school the same year in 1993, and have since become firm friends. I started teaching 3rd grade, and Katie became our Orchestra teacher. Over the years, the music program has grown and strengthened because of Katie's hard work and dedication," said Ahern.

"Our school district is over 85% Hispanic students. Katie started a mission some years ago to honor and highlight our communities' musical culture by starting a Mariachi group of local students. She meets with them weekly after school to practice. They have since been invited to many functions to provide musical entertainment," said Ahern. "Over the years, she has raised funds to provide her group with authentic Mariachi uniforms and instruments. One year, Katie went to a Mariachi Conference and paid for everything out of her own pocket. Katie wanted to learn how to do even more for her group. This month, she shared with me that she bought a trumpet for one of her students (with her own funds). The student was completely overjoyed to receive such a gift from his beloved teacher."

"One of my former students wanted to take cello lessons in second grade. This amazing student had part of her arm missing below the elbow, but Katie said they would make it work. Katie contacted an organization in England that 3D-printed arm attachments for children. They worked together to create a specialized design that allowed this student to play her instrument. She is still playing the cello today in middle school. Earlier this year, Katie worked diligently to have Adrian Anantawan, a world-class violinist, play at our school. She also arranged for Adrian and the student above to meet, as they both were missing a limb below their elbow. What a chance of a lifetime for this student to meet someone like herself who has taken his love of music to the next level," said Ahern.

"This year, Katie was named one of the Grammy Awards Quarter Finalists, 2024. We are all very excited for her," said Ahern.

"In conclusion, Katie and I have been friends and colleagues for 30 years. I can't imagine anyone more dedicated than she is when it comes to bringing music to her students and growing the Mariachi Estrellas, a group that she founded," said Ahern. "Recently, she received funding to get the students authentic costumes. The group looks magnificent! May I offer profound gratitude for everything Katie does for our school community."

I literally could write here until next week and not even get a fraction of Mrs. Dudley’s impact on my life and the students of District 60. One story stands out more than anything: When I was in 7th grade Mrs. Dudley encouraged me to enter the Illinois Solo and Ensemble competition. I was not very good, at all. But her encouragement and enthusiasm for her craft really contributed to me entering the competition. I ended up taking 2nd for my piece and I still have that medal to this day. Katie, you changed my life by being who you are and your love for music and students. You’re one of the reasons why I am a teacher today. Thank you for being such a fantastic teacher and a wonderful person. Kyle Robinson, Abbott Middle School c/o 2003

Katie has always been awesome when working with students who are on the autism spectrum, display developmental delays, or deficits in behavior functioning. She is able to see their musical talents, and develop them to be lovers of music!! She has linked so many of my students to community members. This is priceless when working with families who have students with disabilities.

Katie is the most wonderful, talented orchestra teacher! I’ve known her for 14 years and there’s no one as passionate as her when it comes to teaching orchestra and mariachi to our students. We are so lucky to have Katie at Cooke!

Ms. Dudley is the most dedicated teacher I know. Her passion is teaching kids instruments and it really shows. The kids are always excited to be part of her orchestra and then continue on with Mariachi. They goes above and beyond to make sure that all students have an opportunity to learn and instrument. She inspires me every day to be a better teacher. All the kids at Cooke are so lucky to have her.

I absolutely love being next to the orchestra room this year! It fills me with joy to hear the sounds of strings in the morning. Katie Dudley advocates for the students and ensures access for all. I was fortunate to see several of her former students play at the high school and hear her influence.

Mrs. Dudley has such passion in teaching Orchestra and Mariachi Club to her students. Simply put, she has a “true gift” for music and teaching music. It clearly shows that her students enjoy learning music from her as they reach their potential with various instruments. Mrs. Dudley has also brought various outside music programs (performers) to Cooke and has been a very positive influence District wide. Thank you for all you do and yes, are so well-deserved of this award.

I have worked with Mrs. Dudley for quite sometime now. I met her when I was the secretary for the music department at our school district's main offices (Lincoln Center) and now in my 7th year as a secretary at the same elementary school from where she teaches orchestra and Mariachi. I know first hand how she goes above and beyond to make sure her students have the opportunity to learn instrumental music. She is very dedicated to her orchestra students as well as with her Mariachi students. It is very inspiring to see her admiration for instrumental music especially to have learned and now teach music that comes from another race/culture. I know she is very worthy of this recognition and more.

Mrs. Dudley was one of the first friends that I made when I started working at Andrew Cooke Magnet School. She introduced me to the music world in elementary school! She's a delight to see when she teaches orchestra to her students. What amazes me about Mrs. Dudley is her passion to reach each student's potencial in their instrument skills. She teaches them patience, resilience, and not to give up. She also runs the Mariachi Club! She's very dedicated and enthusiastic about the club and even former students come back to continue being part of it! She brought in Mariachi Club to teach a little bit of the music traditions that is part of the Hispanic/Latino community. Many parents love Mrs. Dudley for teaching their child part of their heritage through music. We've also had adult musicians that had Mrs. Dudley as their music teacher come back to Cooke and play for our students! She's influenced many children over the years and it shows the impact she's made in many people's lives.

Mrs. Dudley is a delightful person to work with. She gives her best to the children. I love music and I love to hear her with the Mariachi band sometimes after school rehearsing. Congratulations Mrs. Dudley I am thrilled and proud of your accomplishments.

Katie is an outstanding orchestra teacher, colleague, and friend. I have known Katie since I started teaching at Cooke in 1998. She always goes above and beyond to to teach the orchestra students(starting in first grade) and the Mariachi groups. She has also been very supportive with assisting me with my own musical endeavors. Katie is an inspiration to us all.

I was the Principal of Andrew Cooke Magnet School for the Fine Arts and Sciences for 10 of the years that Katie has taught there. She is an amazing music educator! During some times of stress, I would go to Katie’s orchestra room and immediately felt uplifted. She loves her students and loves what she was doing! I never missed any of her many concerts that our Cooke students performed. She is such an inspiration! Mrs. Dudley also started a Mariachi group that our largely Hispanic community loved coming out to see her students perform. Katie is loved and respected by all of her students, parents and colleagues; both past and present. She, most definitely,is a LifeChanger!

Margaret Buffin Posted over a year ago

As one of Katie's colleagues I can honestly say she is one of the best there is. Her commitment to our orchestra program never waivers. She spends a lot of extra time creating new ways to teach and always asking her students to reach down and try something harder. She created a culturally responsive program to meet the needs of our community, and in turn brought a whole new group of parents and community into our schools. Now as a parent who has three students who were lucky enough to have her, I could not be more proud to call her a partner in their education. Every one of them played violin first grade through high school. All of them sitting 1st or 2nd chair. That was her! She gave each of them the love of playing and taught them determination and instilled a dedication to music that I would have never been able to. Every single student that Katie has had or will have, have been the luckiest!

Mrs. Dudley has a heart of gold. During my encounter with her as my middle and high school teacher I had nothing but good experiences with her. She was very patient and was always there for us music or not related. She has definitely dedicated her life to not only teaching but changing the life of her students. It’s an honor to say that she was my teacher. Thank you Mrs. Dudley!!!

Mrs. Dudley was my orchestra teacher when I was a student at Abbott Middle School. I pleated the viola and my husband played the cello. I remember Mrs. Dudley’s passion and dedication. I loved watching her feel all the notes intensely. I remember looking forward to playing at the 8th grade promotion ceremonies. Mrs. Dudley made sure we understood how important it was that we put on our best performance for the graduates and their family. I’ve had the honor to watch the Mariachi Estrella perform and it made me proud to see the students’ dedication and effort. I also appreciate that Mrs. Dudley values our culture and has immersed herself in it.

What can I say, Mrs. Dudley is an extraordinary music teacher, she not only taught my children when they were in elementary school about 20 years back, but I can now proudly say she is teaching my grandkids. She is so dedicated to teaching our kids. Mrs. Dudley takes so much time out of her day to dedicate herself to the kids , during school hours and after school. Apart from being a great orchestra teacher, she has her Mariachi groups. Mariachi Cielos where the kids are elementary aged and she worked hard to help them learn , sing and play different songs. These kids play small concerts within our school and the kids learn how to play for the public. Now when these kids graduate out of Cielos and enter middle school up to high school if they want to continue they will now enter Mariachi Estrellas where they play throughout Lake County, Illinois in many different Venues, church's, schools, private parties, and other locations. Thanks to her superb love for teaching musical interests to our kids many continue playing for years. I can say from my experience my granddaughter loves playing her instrument she started with a cello but then wanted something smaller and went to a viola and according to her middle school teacher she is really good at it and I give thanks to a great beginning teacher for that not only did she teach my granddaughter the Cello, viola she also taught her and still is teaching her the guitar. Sometimes I wonder if she even ever gets to sleep. It's an honor for me to have and have had Mrs. Dudley teach my kids and now my sons kids (her former students) she deserves this recognition and much more. The Alvarez family loves her very much.

I went to cook from 2010-2011, I had moved to Georgia after then. Whilst at Cook, I had Ms. Dudley as a orchestra teacher. I loved orchestra so much, she made me have a passion for violin. When I got to Georgia, they didn’t offer orchestra for elementary school and I was devastated, so I waited until middle school and picked it back up. Ms. Dudley introduced me to one of my favorite hobbies, I played violin all the way through high school. Even though I’m an adult now, I still own my instrument, and I still pick it up and play it. All thanks to Ms.Dudley, I have one of my favorite hobbies that I never plan to get tired of.

Mrs. Dudley is an amazing orchestra teacher! My daughter is in second grade and has been playing the violin under her for two years now. Her talent, patience and dedication to our Fine Arts Magnet School children is second to none. I know many of her fellow students and they love playing thanks to Mrs.Dudley. Her devotion to the Mariachi group is incredible! We are most certainly blessed to have her as an educator!!
