Music that Describes Melissa

Melissa Roy-Wood was nominated by a colleague, Pakaikeo Smith.

"It is my great honor and absolute pleasure to warmly nominate our exceptional principal, Melissa Roy-Wood, for the LifeChanger of the Year award. Melissa's dedication and transformative leadership truly make her an outstanding candidate. Melissa's two decades of service within the San Diego Unified School District have showcased her as an extraordinary force for positive change. There is no one more deserving of this prestigious award than Melissa Wood," said Smith.

"I have known Melissa since our time together in the Teacher Education Program at San Diego State University in 2003. Her exceptional qualities were evident even then, and she has continued to shine brightly throughout her career. I hold Melissa in the highest regard and maintain a strong and enduring professional relationship with her, driven by her transformative impact on countless lives, including mine. Like many others, I consider it a privilege to stand alongside her as an educational partner," said Smith.

"Melissa's transformational leadership extends to every corner of our school community. She does so much more than her job description entails. She has an uncanny ability to inspire people to be greater, do better, and change their lives—her boundless joy and passion for what she does spark joy in others," said Smith.

"Melissa plays music at lunch on Fridays, aptly named 'Feel Good Fridays,' a simple yet powerful gesture that lifts the spirits of all who hear it and makes lunch a more pleasurable experience for students. She also goes the extra mile to celebrate the birthday of every single student, teacher, and staff member. They come to her office for a special "birthday buddy" plushie, a heartwarming gesture conveying her belief that moments matter," said Smith.

"Furthermore, Melissa has transformed the principal's office into a welcoming and inspiring space," said Smith. "She has made it a place where people want to come because they feel valued and inspired daily. Her dedication and the countless little things she does add to something very big."

"Melissa's extraordinary journey began with 13 years as an elementary school teacher, followed by seven years as an administrator within our district. Her wealth of experience and expertise has served as a guiding light for fellow educators and staff, helping them develop into accomplished professionals. With mastery in curriculum and instruction, she dedicates herself to empowering her teachers and staff, enabling them to reach their full potential in the field of education," said Smith.

"Since assuming leadership at Bay Park Elementary, Melissa's impact has been nothing short of transformative. She leads our school with unwavering dedication, touching the lives of students, colleagues, and families profoundly," said Smith. "Her steadfast commitment to inclusivity and advocacy for students with disabilities have reshaped our school's culture."

Mrs. Wood initiated monthly Principal's Chats & Family Days, providing parents of students with diverse needs, including English Learners and those with disabilities, a platform to connect and share their concerns. These sessions have become invaluable for fostering community and support among parents.

Her dedication extends to weekly morning meetings and communication via “The Stingray Splash,” where she and her administrative support team personally engage with the school community, who may have limited access to school due to work commitments. These interactions bridge the gap between parents and the school, strengthening the partnership between home and classroom.

Mrs. Wood is an active social media user, primarily through her daily Instagram posts, where she shares slices of life across campus and makes her school's activities and accomplishments more visible and accessible to a broader audience. Her social media presence not only boosts community engagement but also highlights the achievements of students and staff alike.

Her steadfast support of initiatives like the PTA Chat 4 Six and Weekly Campus Tours has encouraged all families to amplify their voices, including multigenerational families, blended families, and parents of English Learners and students with disabilities. This engagement has increased participation and a profound sense of belonging for these families within the school community.

Under her guidance, students with disabilities actively participate in and lead various clubs, with a standout example being the Ally Action Club. Mrs. Wood's mentorship and commitment to these students have empowered them to take charge and provide professional development on being allies for each other, gracefully navigating challenging situations.

Mrs. Wood is not just an administrator but an equity warrior, celebrating diversity and valuing differences, thus making her school's diversity its greatest strength.

Her commitment to students with disabilities goes far beyond mere words. She ensures that the Special Education Team and service providers can access the resources and spaces required to support students effectively. She shares her office space with specialists, a testament to her unwavering dedication. Her steadfast support and guidance for all staff members truly sets her apart. Everyone knows they can turn to her when they need assistance, and she has an extraordinary ability to mobilize the entire school community to provide help when needed.

Mrs. Wood's approach to leadership is extremely active and seen all over campus. Her visible and servant leadership qualities shine through daily in various ways. She can often be seen greeting families and helping manage traffic during the mornings and afternoons. Her involvement extends to recess supervision and daily lunch supervision. It's common to witness her actively participating in school life, whether she's cleaning the lunch arbor, picking up trash, or even taking up a mop and broom as needed. Mrs. Wood leads by example, and her willingness to perform these hands-on tasks inspires students, staff, parents, and volunteers to join in. This collective effort creates a significant and positive impact on the school community. Mrs. Wood is more than an administrator; she is a role model for everyone around her.

Her tenure as a principal has yielded remarkable results in behavior and referrals. Her commitment to creating a safe and nurturing student environment goes beyond words. She advocates for their well-being and safety, collaborating with school police, the nursing and wellness department, and other relevant stakeholders. Her steadfast efforts have played a pivotal role in ensuring that students are protected and supported.

"This dedication extends to teachers and parents as well. Melissa fiercely advocates for educators, providing guidance, support, and the resources they need to excel. She also fosters positive relationships with parents, working collaboratively to strengthen the school's community ties. As a result of her transformational leadership, the schools under her guidance have witnessed a substantial reduction in referrals and suspensions, especially for students with disabilities and Black and Brown youth. This remarkable change reflects the inclusive and equitable school environment she has successfully cultivated," said Smith.

"Melissa's impact reaches beyond the school's walls. She has actively engaged families and parents in various leadership roles. Her consistency in celebrating academic success and behavioral progress with the school community is a testament to her unwavering commitment. Her influence has left an indelible legacy of inclusivity and empowerment, enriching the lives of all who have had the privilege of working with her," said Smith.

"Melissa Wood stands as the epitome of a LifeChanger. Her unwavering dedication to crafting a positive educational environment where every student can thrive, regardless of their background or abilities, is nothing short of remarkable. Her unwavering commitment to inclusivity, her tireless pursuit of high educational standards, and her profound impact on students and colleagues undeniably qualify her for the LifeChanger of the Year award."

"Melissa Wood's influence extends far beyond the boundaries of Bay Park Elementary. She has left an indelible mark on every position and department she has led, leaving a legacy of transformation. It is our distinct honor and privilege to nominate her for this prestigious award and wholeheartedly recommend her as an exceptional candidate," said Smith.

I’m so very Happy to see So many beautiful words to describe my friend! I’m not sure how to actually describe Melissa’s dedication to every aspect of Her life. She is an overachiever, a dedicated, educated, selfless human who gives beyond what can only be described as a super power! Melissa gives Everything in which she is involved. Principal, teacher, parent, softball mom, and even Mom-Friend. I just know there’s a cape tucked in the back of her shirt. It’s an honor to know someone who makes a difference in the lives of so many. Our family is better knowing Melissa (and her family).

Melissa Wood is a deserving candidate for this award because she cares. She centers children in environments where they deserve to be front and center, even when adults in these environments want to center themselves and prioritize their comfort over the needs of the kids in their care. Because she centers children, she can be a wonderful partner for parents willing to do the work to create community that is hopeful, honest and non-transactional (when Melissa does something for you it is not in the hopes that you do something in return for her, but because it was the right thing to do and will make life better for kids and families). Her passion for education and joy is apparent in all she does, and even when things are not ideal, she is able to put her head down and do the work. The world of education needs more people like her: Willing to listen to hard truths, embrace restorative practices, create community with all different kinds of families, and seek to center positivity so that every child can thrive.

I have known Melissa for 5 years. Our daughters play softball for the same league. Our daughters have been on the same and opposing teams. Regardless, Melissa is there managing, coaching, advocating for and cheering on ALL the girls in the league. She has taught me to be a better parent, just by watching her tireless efforts to offer her child and all the others opportunities to play! Mellisa’s daughter made the all star team last year for our league, but Mellisa recognized that 9 girls did not make the cut, so she called me and a few other parents and rallied us to put together a silver all star team. She genuinely wanted all the girls to have a chance to play! In doing so, another mom and myself stepped into managing and coaching roles! I am proud to say that the silver all star team did not win any trophies but had the BEST softball season of their lives. It was an amazing experience for the girls and their families and it all started with multiple late evening calls from Mellisa encouraging us to do it for the girls. I will always treasure that opportunity and I owe it entirely to Mellisa. She changed my life and my daughters.

Greetings, I'm Yanette Flores, serving as the Building Services Supervisor at Bay Park Elementary. I’f like to shed light on the admirable qualities of our esteemed principal, who serves not only as the head of our school but also as its compassionate heart. I'd like to take a moment to highlight someone truly exceptional – Melissa Wood. I had the incredible experience of coaching alongside her for three seasons on our daughters' softball teams, where she didn't just manage, but created an environment where these girls soared, both competitively and personally. As a high school softball coach in our community, I can't help but marvel at the ripple effect of Melissa's hard work and dedication. It's not just about the game; it's about the incredible transformation I witness on the field. Girls thriving, parents stepping up to coach and lead – all thanks to Melissa's incredible influence. And let me tell you, seeing her leadership extend into the school is nothing short of awe-inspiring. She's managed to create that same ripple effect, ensuring students are set up for success beyond the softball field. Melissa, you're not just a coach; you're a catalyst for positive change, creating a legacy that goes beyond the game. You're truly second to none, a life-changer in more ways than we can count. Having closely collaborated with Melissa, she’s been a life-changer to me and over the years I am a witness to the profound impact she continues to make in our community. Melissa's charisma, creativity, and commitment to teaching and learning make her truly stand out. While we worked together in Early Childhood Education, Melissa's engagement in the Urban Collaborative Project of Southeast San Diego provided invaluable support to numerous elementary and preschools across our expansive urban school district. Her efforts reinforced kindergarten readiness skills and enhanced academic rigor across multiple preschools and child development centers. What truly sets Melissa apart is her remarkable ability to make a difference in the lives of those she encounters. I've seen her collaborate with teachers to implement Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science, and the California Preschool Learning Foundations and Framework, instilling a genuine joy for learning in both students and educators. Melissa's expertise in elementary, early childhood, and STEAM education has not only inspired me to be a better professional but also a better person and leader. The way she leads teams and serves the community is something to behold. Her influence extends far beyond the classroom, empowering students, staff, and families alike. Under her guidance, students emerge from classrooms as stronger, more confident individuals, well-prepared not only for kindergarten but for life's challenges. Families leave our schools and centers with a deep belief in the collaborative educational journey fostered by Melissa. She has taken old and forgotten classrooms and turned them into community meeting spaces. Wherever she leads, she leads with love and it’s evident in the spaces she creates for her students, staff and teams. Melissa is truly extraordinary in her ability to bring people together for greater impact, setting in motion a series of small yet pivotal initiatives that serve as the building blocks for life-changing experiences. Her initiatives include crafting a parent lending library, a hub of knowledge and connection. Melissa ingeniously established a community gathering space tailored for young students to delve into the joy of reading, fostering a love for learning from an early age. Her tireless efforts extend to beautifying numerous classrooms, creating vibrant environments conducive to growth and exploration. Not stopping there, Melissa envisioned and implemented a Community Resource Room—a vital space where parents, caregivers, and the community converge. This room becomes a nucleus for collaboration, information sharing, and collective growth, reinforcing the foundation for positive change in countless lives. She does the impossible. Melissa's incredible knack for initiating these endeavors not only transforms physical spaces but also cultivates an environment where the seeds of change are sown and nurtured. Her visionary leadership continues to be a driving force in making a meaningful impact on individuals and the community at large.

She’s constantly out and about at school, walking the halls and in the classrooms, encouraging students and interacting with parents. She is compassionate, professional and enthusiastic. Mrs. Wood is a true partner to parents at the school and we know she has our kids best interests in mind. At PTA meetings she’s very open and respectful with answering parent questions - she explains what is happening behind the scenes so parents understand impacts to our teachers and kids. We are so grateful to have Mrs. Wood as our amazing leader.

I would be honored to nominate Melissa Roy Wood for the life changer of the Year award. I first met Melissa Roy Wood when she began her tenure as principal at Franklin Elementary STEAM Magnet School in San Diego California. During her time at Franklin Elementary, Melissa worked tirelessly to assist the students and the staff to work very hard to try to close the gap of the learning lost due to the pandemic. Melissa delivered computers to students who could not come and get them , she also brought food to families who were in need of that and also brought school supplies to them. She organized school supply pickups during the pandemic which was very successful . Melissa's tireless efforts and her ethic to work very hard renewed Parental engagement and neighborhood /community support for our little school. As a staff member, she encouraged and supported all my work during the shutdown, which was very much needed, given the unknown and yes a bit frightening, pandemic situation. Upon returning to in school learning, her support and encouragement and her faith in my hard work was really important and I am thankful to her to this day. Upon Our return to in person learning, Melissa jumped right In with both feet to make the transition from distance learning to in-person learning a lot smoother! Without her coaching, her trust in my abilities and without her encouragement, I think it would have been more difficult for me to return to the in person online learning . Her knowledge of technology also was of great help to me while we were doing distance learning. As a school administrator, her ideas for Franklin Elementary just seemed to flow easily from her brain and into implementation. I have seen her spend countless hours working before school hours and after school hours, sometimes late into the night working to make sure that our school would be successful during the pandemic era rebound. Melissa always seem to find time to speak to any staff member or any parent when requested. Things were very difficult at that time. Yet, we the staff and the students, returned to full in person learning with her bright smile, her positive and "can do" attitude and her dedication to the students really made coming back to full-time in school classroom learning much easier for me at Franklin Elementary, than some of my friends who experienced coming back after the pandemic in different schools. Melissa took things to task that I've not seen any principal do before: one thing that stands out in my mind is how she completely redecorated and filled our staff lunchroom with a television, cell phone charging stations and computers for the ParaEducators to check their email while at work. She also bought and kept healthy snacks and beverages in the staff lunchroom, which was a real treat and a total morale booster! As far as school spirit, she renewed Franklin school spirit, and made sure that her collaboration with me, and most importantly the parents, were always positive. No principle that worked there before had ever written our school motto "Franklin Flyers Soar" on each and everyone of her letterhead and messages. For me, just those three words were profound in getting me back into the school spirit and renewed my trust in the school system because we all aspired to soar when we returned from the pandemic! I certainly hope that she is awarded the life changer of the year title because she has changed lives, for the better.

It’s about doing what you love, turning work into passion, and answering a calling. While many merely exist, Melissa goes beyond, bringing more to every endeavor. Spending time with her reveals that she is greater than the sum of her actions. It's clear that the world needs individuals like Melissa to make a lasting impact and create positive change. Melissa isn't your typical principal—she's a catalyst for transformative change. I want to take a moment to express my deep admiration for Principal Melissa Wood, a true life-changer in our educational community. During her tenure at Sequoia Elementary, while I was president of the PTA, Melissa was not just a passive presence on the PTA board; she served as our parliamentarian, actively contributing to our annual fall carnival, Read Across America, Dr. Seuss night, Family Literacy & Math Night, and more. She went above and beyond, presenting parent workshops and forming lasting connections with students. Melissa's commitment extended beyond school hours. She tutored students on her own time, crafting dynamic lessons that brought learning to life throughout the year. Her dedication is remarkable, evident in the energy and skills she poured into every endeavor. Today, I witness Melissa leading departments and schools, even managing her daughter's softball team. Her versatility knows no bounds. She is an incredible force, giving selflessly to enhance the educational experience for all. Melissa Wood is not just a principal; she's a source of inspiration and positive change in the San Diego community. Her impact is immeasurable, and we are fortunate to have her at the helm of our educational institutions. Sincerely, Jennifer Destino President, Foundation of James Madison High School

When I think of commitment to education: professionally, personally, and as a community member, I immediately think of Melissa, Roy Wood. Seeing her follow in the educational footsteps of her father and achieve excellence on her own right is outstanding. But as an educator, who had the great joy of teaching her daughter. I found out what real parental involvement should look like. She is a model to others and I’m sure the opportunity to work for her would’ve added depth to my professional experience.

Melissa Wood is a LifeChanger. I’m so thankful to have worked such an astounding woman. I’ve been blessed to be built up so much by an amazing woman who truly cares about the people in education. People make up the organizations and she knows how to move mountains within a populace. She has a beautiful soul and nourishes her community in ways that engulf an environment into transformational energy. The vibrancy lives in her efforts as a principal to make sure all students are seen on a variety of plains. I’ve seen her in a variety of communities throughout my career. I’m such a better teacher under her influence. She knows exactly how to transform teachers of the future. She has been one of the most influential mentors I’ve had in my career. The amount of strife and effort given by Melissa has given her the ability to take the most difficult situations in any community and spin them on their head. She was born to lead.

Having known Melissa Roy-Wood for many years, I've had the joy of watching her develop into the incredible leader she is today. We were colleagues at Sequoia Elementary, where I also had the pleasure of being her BTSA Support Provider. Melissa had an eagerness to learn, enthusiasm for taking on numerous site responsibilities, and most importantly, ability to always keep her students' needs at the forefront. Our years together have been truly special.

I am above and beyond honored to know that someone whom I hold in such high esteem is being considered as a LifeChanger of the Year. She is truly a LifeChanger. Having known Melissa for over 35 years, I've witnessed her extraordinary journey from being a student at La Jolla Elementary to becoming an exceptional fifth-grade teacher in 2008. Melissa's connection to La Jolla Elementary goes beyond the typical teacher-student relationship. Remarkably, she returned to teach in the very same class she attended as a student, turning her classroom into a space of both nostalgia and innovation. Melissa's impact is not only felt through her exceptional teaching skills but also through her dedication to creating a positive and inclusive environment. As our site’s union rep, Melissa fearlessly advocated for both teachers and students, fostering a collegial atmosphere among her grade-level team. Her commitment to making learning enjoyable extended beyond the curriculum. From adopting families in need, creating memorable holidays, and tutoring students on her own time, Melissa's influence radiated far beyond the classroom walls. Her initiatives, such as pen pal programs, book clubs, and events with authors, showcased her passion for connecting students and fostering a love for learning. Melissa's leadership in implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) significantly impacted our school's culture, setting high expectations for positive behavior. Melissa has so much energy, she has so much love, patience and insight in all that she does supporting her school and community. There really is no one quite like her. Recognized as the 2013 Teacher of the Year at La Jolla Elementary, Melissa's dedication left a lasting mark, even years after she taught here. Transitioning into administration, her impact continues to resonate, exemplifying her resolute commitment to students and the community she serves. Melissa's social media page for Bay Park, @bpstingrays, is a testament to her ongoing commitment to being a life changer and an incredible educator. I wholeheartedly believe that no one is more deserving than Melissa Roy-Wood of this honor.

Principal Melissa Roy Wood accepts a challenge head on. I met Ms. Melissa while working at the Euclid Child Development Center. She is dedicated to helping the most vulnerable students in our community. As someone who lived in the mid-city community for twenty five years I appreciated her approach to working with low income families from the most diverse cultural backgrounds. Her interactions with students and parents made me feel at ease, knowing they were in the excellent hands of someone with empathy and a deep understanding of how to assist them. She expects the best from students and sees the endless potential they have in each interaction. While being a young mother herself, she put the same love and care she would for her own children into our SDUSD students, promoting fun and interesting forms of literacy every chance she had. While working at Franklin Elementary School she opened the door to the Children and Youth in Transition (CYT) department, supporting homeless, military, foster, immigrant and refugee students. She helped promote programs and services on how to help these populations with her enrollment staff, teachers and counselors, going far beyond what is expected of her. She is fun, jolly, warm and the coolest nerd. She is a life long learner made to teach and lead.

Ms. Roy-Wood is by far the best principal I have ever worked with! Her positive, caring, generous nature flows over into her leadership. During my teaching internship, Ms. Roy-Wood supported my growth as an educator by supporting me and my students in the classroom and by modeling the attributes of an effective teacher. Ms. Roy-Wood has made an endelible impact on my profession as a teacher of students with moderate-severe disabilities. I am honored to have worked with (beside) her!

I have had the honor of working with Melissa at Franklin Elementary as well as Bay Park. I run the YMCA after-school programs for the schools, and I can say without a doubt that Melissa is one of those rare individuals / rare principals you do not always come across. I have witnessed first-hand her dedication and determination in ensuring that the students, families, and her staff feel valued, appreciated, and respected. Whether it be the child that is having a difficult day or the teacher that needs a friend to speak to candidly. She is exemplary in her leadership role and touches everyone that she serves. We run a tuition free camp called Summerbridge in the summer. Summer is supposed to be the time when principals take somewhat of a break. Not Melissa. She was ensuring that these eighty children, who otherwise would not have a summer, had an amazing summer. For a week straight she was making phone calls, using her connections to allow us to take these inspiring students to colleges, field trips across San Diego, and helped create lifelong friendships. There is no one in this field that I respect more than Melissa Roy-Wood. Her dedication as a principal and an educator is like no other and it is extremely admirable.

Grateful to have worked under the inspiring leadership of Melissa Roy-Wood at Franklin Elementary STEAM Magnet School for over four years. As a fourth-grade teacher, I witnessed her transformative impact on both educators and students alike. Melissa, a phenomenal woman of color, not only excelled as an instructional leader but also masterfully navigated conflict resolution, fostering a positive shift in our school's culture. Her dedication sparked incredible strides in turning around a historically challenging environment. Melissa is more than a principal; she's a life-changer. Additionally, she orchestrated a systematic enhancement of our school's organizational structure, seamlessly integrating avant-garde pedagogical approaches into our curriculum. Melissa's astute leadership not only refined our educational framework but also heralded a remarkable metamorphosis in our institutional ethos. In the realm of academia, a teacher would deem themselves exceptionally fortunate to encounter a principal of Melissa's caliber—a paragon of visionary leadership and educational acumen.
